´It´s like a bunch of savages´: Thousands of passengers stranded on a disabled Carnival cruise ship fighting over food and toilets and sleeping in tents

| The more than 3,000 passengers on the stricken cruise ship stuck off coast of Mexico have turned into ´savages´ and are fighting over food, relatives have claimed. Those on board have no power and have been forced to sleep on deck in tents as there is no air conditioning in the sweltering cabins. The toilets are also not working meaning that passengers have had to make do with bags or buckets. Brent Nutt, whose wife Bethany is on board, claimed that brawling had started because some passengers have got so hungry and food is so scarce.

Comments: A and I haven´t had the desire to go on a cruise, not since a traumatic "we are stuck in the middle of nowhere" situation with TWA back in the eighties. Budget cutbacks for every business is going to create more such situations.

Yet the LSMNBCABCCBS idiots this morning said they still had power for the cabins and food and everything was fine except the boat was waiting for a tow from the coast guard..... this is just a small micro example of what would actually happen in a national emergency.... very scary

Carnival has had this happen before. they are negligent in that they don´t have plan to prevent this from happening. I see valid law suits coming from this incident. Bet, Just think what it will be like in the States when food becomes so expensive that people won´t be able to afford it.

I think it’s time to face facts. That place is going to be a Mad Max/thunderdome Waterworld/Lord of the Flies horror show within the next few hours. My advice is to prepare yourself now. Hoard weapons, grow gills and learn to communicate with serpents. While you’re working on that, find the biggest guy you can and when he’s not expecting it beat him senseless. Gather young fighters around you and tell the womenfolk you will feed and protect any female who agrees to participate without question in your plans to repopulate the earth with a race of gilled-supermen. It’s never too soon to be prepared.

I used to entertain the idea of going on a cruise sometime. The horror stories, which, at the minimum, include tainted food and a boatload of sick people, I´ve decided that I will do enjoyable things for vacations which don´t come with such dangers built in.

Maybe they could sing a song in the meantime:
´´Just sit right back and you´ll hear a tale, A tale of a fateful trip That started from this tropic port, Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man, The skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day For a three hour tour A three hour tour....´´

Carnival says another ship in its fleet, Carnival Elation, is currently on the scene and transferring additional food and beverage provisions to the Carnival Triumph.
Cruise Critic member Clinty76, who says his wife and mother-in-law are onboard, posted this note from his wife on the message boards: "We are about to get supplies from another cruise ship and apparently the tug boats should be here tomorrow around noon ... We have no power AT ALL, which means we can´t use the toilets, wash our hands, or take a shower."
Another member, jgomila198101, said that her sister called and relayed the following: "They have plenty of food. They are all fine, but doesn´t look like they will be back until Wednesday night. Said they are still having fun and gave me the task to call her boss who seems to think I was lying LOL. OH WELL glad they are enjoying the extended vacation."

Sounds like a Caribbean ORI Cruise I made on the USS Independence in the spring of 1969 -
Toilets quit working. Water Hours - no showers, drinking fountains, sinks, etc. Baloney sandwiches 3 X a day. No AC, except in the Computer Room where my mates and I slept (no tents). Long lines for chow and, yes, fights broke out.
But at least I was getting paid the princely sum of about $200 a month, plus free baloney sandwiches.

Couple of things come to mind ...
Can´t you just dip some water out of the Gulf and use that for the toilets?
Same with showers ... a bit of Gulf water is better than no water at all to wash up.

Oh give me a break. The whining is just too much.
So you were out of power for a few days. You had a place to sleep, you were not suffering from exposure, there is drinking water. I don´t believe there is a lack of food. There are freezers, they can defrost food, the food in the refrigerators would last likely for at least the first day--and they said they had generator power so perhaps longer than that.
I have been stuck in snowed-in airports eating vending machine food for longer than that.
Seriously.

#29, I took a short cruise years ago and during the day it was beautiful but at night it made me very uneasy. I guess I didn´t realize without the sun, how black the water would be. Not seeing any lights on the horizon really bothered me too. I turned out to be a land-lubber at heart. Never do it again.

A senior Eurocrat sparked outrage last night after calling for the phrase “illegal immigrant” to be banned from the European Union.[Snip] She has instructed EU Commission staff to refer to foreigners who break border control laws as “irregular migrants” or simply “people” instead. But her attempt to dictate how the issue of immigration is discussed was savaged last night. A coral reef in Northern Australia severely damaged by warming seas has managed to completely heal itself in just 12 years, stunned researchers have found. The team found that being left alone to breed on its own was key. The discovery raises hope that other damaged reefs could ´regenerate´. The new research shows that an isolated reef off the northwest coast of Australia that was severely damaged by a period of warming in 1998. It was hit by coral bleaching, caused by higher water temperatures that break down the coral´s symbiotic relationship with algae that provide food for coral growth.

As the US and China grow increasingly involved, Kim Jong-un must be brought into line if war is not to be triggered by an act of recklessness. There are two schools of thought about what lies behind North Korea’s increasingly frenzied posturing. The first goes like this: the rhetoric emanating from Pyongyang--including calls to “break the waists of the crazy enemies [and] totally cut their windpipes”--is no worse than their decades-old ritualistic promises to turn South Korea into a “sea of fire”. What we are witnessing, according to this theory, is nothing more than an inexperienced leader

Anyone who remembers the halcyon dreams of the 1990s, of civil society spreading the world over, heralding a new peaceful, global millennium, must marvel at the path the young 21st century has taken. Even those who paid attention to global Jihad before the millennium could not imagine how vulnerable the West would prove in the coming, wildly asymmetrical war. Those who, over the course of the last 13 years, have awakened to the ever-growing danger of Islamism and to the astonishing inability of decent people--Muslims and non-Muslims--to effectively oppose its aggressions, owe themselves a brief lesson in cognitive warfare, and

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that
