Solar industry grapples
with hazardous wastes

Associated Press, by Jason Dearen

Original Article

San Francisco — Homeowners on the hunt for sparkling solar panels are lured by ads filled with images of pristine landscapes and bright sunshine, and words about the technology´s benefits for the environment — and the wallet. What customers may not know is that there´s a dirtier side. While solar is a far less polluting energy source than coal or natural gas, many panel makers are nevertheless grappling with a hazardous waste problem. Fueled partly by billions in government incentives, the industry is creating millions of solar panels each year and, in the process, millions of pounds of polluted sludge and contaminated

Comments:
Mercury waste from industry is bad; mercury pollution from CLF light bulbs is good. Smog from factories is bad, smog from ethanol is a necessary byproduct. Etc. So many hidden downsides to this "green" scam.

Drill, baby, drill. Frack, baby, frack. Unsightly solar panels on my roof or underground gas lines and electric cables into my house. Tough call. Solar panels= cheaper energy. Cloudy skies = cold showers and overcoats inside on snowy days.....Tougher call. I repeat...drill, baby, drill. Frack, baby, frack. And natural gas burns clean. Burning logs in the fireplace or lighting the gas heater, which is more environmentally friendly??? hmmmm...

Highly acceptable hazardous waste to the left. Are these things really less polluting than natural gas overall? Where are they finding customers willing to buy these damn things except overpaid liberal hacks? My guess is refitting old government buildings.

Make them in China and turn that place into a hazardous waste dump. Export our mercury thermometers.

Solar panels require rare earths that are hazardous to mine, refine, and use in manufacturing operations. The mine in CA is just coming back on stream after having closed because it could not keep up with the regulatory requirements and compete internationally. If panels were actually manufactured in the US there ought to be hazardous waste. Unless all the parts were produced in China and only assembled here, there ought to be hazardous waste at each manufacturing site. Could it be the less than half actually followed pollution laws after getting Federal and State money?

The tables have turned. Police are investigating the vandalism of the inflammatory sign at ATLAH World Missionary Church in Harlem over the weekend as a hate crime. The unlikely situation stands to paint the church’s controversial pastor, James David Manning, who frequently adorned his marquee with blatantly vicious messages, in a sympathetic light. “His signs were hateful,” said Carmen Neely, the president of Harlem Pride. “I think he should be investigated for hate speech.” The pastor and his billboards are protected under the First Amendment, though, the New York Civil Liberties Union has said. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,
