| The U.S. Postal Service´s decision to eliminate Saturday delivery could disproportionally hurt minority groups, according to Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee. "You´re talking about just this reduction … from six days to five days will cut anywhere from 25,000 to 30,000 employees. And with regard to Asian, African-Americans, and Hispanics, they comprise about 40 percent of the Postal Service employees," Cummings told Melissa Harris-Perry on MSNBC Friday night. "So it´s logical to believe if they were to lose that 30,000 jobs, easily 40 percent of them would be African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans."
|
Comments: We poke fun at Cummings, but his thinking is simply a cruder version of how Attorney General Eric Holder seems to view the country.

My long term +50 yr old white postman was recently replaced with 2 young blacks. He did not retire... he was re-assigned as part time against his will.

No ammount of ´innovation´ is going to make people send more mail. We are 1/8 of the way into the 21st century. Things change. The only checks I write and send are gifts, like so many people. It´s over for the PO. As far as I´m concerned, they could go to Mon/Wed/Fri.

Cummings is from Md. as is Senator Mikulski who are both patron saints of federal workers. The PO isn´t serious about cutting expenses, cutting out Sat. delivery except for packages is a farce. If a person shows up to deliver one package,my guess is he´ll get paid for the whole day if not overtime on top.
Cummings is no stranger to playing the race card so this is just his MO.
At the end of the day there will be a bailout of the post office under the guise of minorities being hardest hit.
This is really no different than a family being a 1000 bucks a month short and cutting out pizza to solve the problem.

Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the Islamo-Marxist Progressive buffoon waves his magic wand:
"Basically, what the Congress needs to do is do a comprehensive bill whereby we have what we call an innovation officer, which is my idea. And that person would keep the Post Office as cutting edge of innovation and bringing in new ways to of making money"
I think that Congress should mandate that all Post Office vehicles get 200 mpg by 2014 and that email be put directly under the control of the Post Office so they can charge a "stamp convenience fee" on every message equal to what we would pay if we physically sent a letter. These "cutting edge innovations" would solve all their problems.

One reason why across-the-agency salary reductions of 10 percent would be better.

WHY are whites UNDER represented? According to the census, 72.4% of those employed by the Post Office..actually any federal workforce should be white. (The United States Census Bureau defines White people as those "having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who reported “White” or wrote in entries such as Irish, German, Italian, Lebanese, Near Easterner, Arab, or Polish."[16] Whites constitute the majority of the U.S. population, with a total of 223,553,265 or 72.4% of the population in the 2010 United States Census.

The postal service has been notorious for avoiding any kind of efficiency programs. There are laws that do not let then study what is needed and then implement cost saving plans. The unions want dues payers, not less workers. The system is corrupt with kickbacks, etc. when people get promoted or pay increases. The bosses and unions are rolling in happy dollars from the mailers.

Wait a minute! If minorities are only 40%, that means whites are 60%! So who really gets hurt the most?
Besides, who cares about skin color, as long as the job gets done? (I know, democrats obsess over skin color.)
UPS and FEDEX are examples of much more efficient service, so I say privatize mail delivery and get government out of it!

I go into a Post Office maybe one or two times a year. I think that half of the staff cannot read. We are still getting mail addressed to the original owner of our home that moved thirteen years ago. I would be happy if we could opt for no junk mail delivery so that mail carriers do not have to work so hard. It goes from mail box to the recycle bin without even opening it. There is a lot of waste in this organization. Cut waste and you could cut costs by 40%.

the psotal service has gone to great lengths to improve efficiency, from the use of barney, a purple colored huge mailing sorter device, to measuring the length of a postal delivery person´s stride. The central problem right now is that congress, in a flight of fancy, told the postal service that pension plans had to be fully funded immediately - this is the only governmental entity that is required to do so. The funds in question amount to about 8 bilion dollars, due right now.

I was told that the pkg could not be delivered to that town overnite..it was TO FAR AWAY from the city. I had to send the pkg. by UPS. It arrived on time...and the UPS used the same roads that the USPS use. and the cost was 64 dollars... privatize this USPS..but it wont happen, because Congress ´uses" the service....

There are multiple reasons why the post office should eliminate Saturday delivery. One is being that the mail processing is not there. Today people are using direct pay and e-mail which reduces the delivery of mail. Another is FEDEX and UPS. These two companies are able to ship cheaper. The post office screwed themselves by pandering to the union. People at the post office are being paid mega bucks to sit around (on call). It would not hurt me if they are reduced delivery to three days a week.

Here´s an experiment: Go to any small-town post office that is under threat of closure. If you don´t know which ones they are, call your Congressman. Purchase some stamps. The person (the only one there) who cheerfully and efficiently helps you is probably non-union. Then go to the flagship post office in downtown (14th and L St NW) Washington DC. Try to purchase some stamps. All the people who flagrantly refuse to help you are union. Guess which post office will be closed. Guess which post office the USPS is afraid to touch.

Yes, the Postal Service has become the option of working welfare in the big cities. Our downtown plant that is on the way to closure had more that it´s fair share of drunks, no shows, disabled i.e. light or limited duty. Because some of these people are black & women there have been gross violations that would get anyone else fired. It was well known that 2 shift leaders would go down to the River Boat casino on postal time. They did not get fired. People abuse the Family Medical Leave Act - black and white - so much that they have to take leave w/o pay etc.

So we should never allow minorities to be hired in numbers disproportionate to their population. That way they would not be hurt disproportionately when laid off. What in the world are we doing hiring minorities in such disproportionate numbers anyway. I thought the government was an "equal opportunity employer"? Doesn´t look so to me. Oh. I see. The quasi-official ideology of the U.S. armed forces holds that generals are virtually interchangeable, that individual personalities don’t matter much, that ordinary grunts are in any case more important than their leaders, and that what really counts are larger systems that make a complex bureaucracy function. There is some truth to all of this. But for all of the bureaucratic heft of the services and the heroism of ordinary soldiers, it is hard to imagine the Civil War having been won without Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan—or World War II without Marshall, Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Arnold, LeMay, Nimitz, Halsey,

FORT WORTH -- For 21/2 years, Germain Gardea kept his wives in the dark. The 38-year-old flight instructor spent weekdays in Arlington with his first wife, Jennifer Saldivar, and their young son. On weekends, he left town for his job as an instructor at a flight school, residing in Grapevine with his second wife, Leslie Gardea, who traveled during the week. To keep the women from finding out about each other, he created fake divorce documents on the Internet and filed his first wife´s taxes, marking her as single without her knowledge. The Supreme Court could soon end one of the federal government´s most archaic practices. Since the 1930s, the Agriculture Department has turned California raisin growers into pawns of its Raisin Administrative Committee, which can commandeer up to half of the farmer´s crop and then pay them little or nothing for the product. Marvin Horne, a 67-year-old raisin farmer in Fresno, Calif., was fined almost $700,000 for refusing to surrender control of much of his harvest to the government committee in 2002. Horne, who has been growing raisins for more than 40 years,

There are many who scoff at Andrew Cuomo’s chances in a presidential primary campaign, but I am not among them. His name is an iconic Democratic brand, he’s forceful on the stump and a prodigious fund-raiser. Besides, somebody has to win the nomination. Of course, there are hurdles. Saint Hillary is gearing up to run, and there will be a scrum among contenders, probably including Vice President Joe Biden, competing just to be Clinton’s top rival. The scenario, then, is daunting but doable — or at least it was,

Historian James Thomas Flexner referred to George Washington as "the indispensable man." Americans all know he was a general, but have you ever wondered what grade of general? How many stars did Gen. Washington have? In today´s Army, a one-star general is a brigadier; two stars is a major general; three stars is a lieutenant general; four stars is just plain general. During World War II, Congress created the five-star general, the modern rank of general of the Army. There had been an earlier grade that was called general of the Army,

Imagine the pitch to a History Channel executive for the smash hit The Bible. Here’s one scenario: Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett: “Hi, we want to produce a story that appeals to all age groups. It’s has everything: love, lust, greed, war, self-sacrifice and redemption. It’s called ‘The Bible.’” Executive: “Could you repeat that? You said ‘The Bible’?” RD and MB: “Yes – we want to retell the Bible for this generation. And we think we can make money doing it. We’ve done a lot of market research —there is no competition out there.”

Since the Shermans of General Patton´s Third Army crossed the Rhine on March 22, 1945, there have been American tanks in Germany. No more, as John Vandiver of Stars and Stripes reports. The U.S. Army’s 69-year history of basing main battle tanks on German soil quietly ended last month when 22 Abrams tanks, a main feature of armored combat units throughout the Cold War, embarked for the U.S. The departure of the last M-1 Abrams tanks coincides with the inactivation of two of the Army’s Germany-based heavy brigades.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

I hope all will look at a lifetime of service over some poorly chosen words.” Carson will remain as commencement speaker at Johns Hopkins,

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. After the Labor Department announced that a mass exodus of 663,000 workers left the U.S. workforce last month and that job creation fell 112,000 jobs short of projections, Obama’s top economic adviser Alan B. Krueger, took to the White House blog to blame the sequester: It is important to bear in mind that the March household and payroll surveys are the first monthly surveys to look

Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna who became famous for her letter urging Ivy League women to use their college years to find a mate, has been denounced as a traitor to feminism, to coeducation, to the university ideal. But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

Beyonce and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Cuba this week. The couple, who married on April 4, 2008, took in the sights of Old Havana, visited a school, dined on a rooftop terrace and strolled the fan-filled streets in their island best.(snip).The power couple declined to answer journalists´ questions about their visit to the island nation, but some outlets are reporting that the moguls are there as tourists, though that would be illegal because of the half-century embargo the U.S. has on the Communist country. The budget President Barack Obama will submit on April 10 will contain a proposal that would prohibit individuals from accumulating more than $3 million in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and tax-preferred retirement accounts. According to a White House statement, the Obama administration believes the current rules allow some wealthy individuals "to accumulate many millions of dollars in these accounts, substantially more than is needed to fund reasonable levels of retirement saving." "The budget would limit an individual’s total balance across tax-preferred accounts to an amount sufficient to finance an annuity of not more than $205,000 per
