Pure insanity. I´m sure criminals who use guns inappropriately will line up to buy insurance.This is just another excuse to punish and track legit gun owners who basically have nothing to do with killings.

The same people who run around killing and robbing people will get free health insurance while honest people pick up the tab.

The republicans could at least pass a bill that if you get a felony conviction,it disqualifies you from Obamacare.

Mandatory insurance & taxes are the progressive´s way to abolish something. In Ca. they added a $75 tax to all real estate transactions.. to fund the new Right to a Clean & Healthy Home! re., new hi rise micro apt. projects intended for the middle class. Next, they mandate home improvements that are too costly to drive homeowners into the micro apts.

Obama mentioned long ago his idea to mandate insurance for gun owners.

I have to carry "uninsured driver insurance" you know the portion to cover "people in the shadows or undocumented workers" on my car insurance.
They can make all legal gun owners to buy insurance to cover criminal gun owners just like car insurance.

Actually, not a bad idea. So-called responsible gun owners who fail to keep their weapons locked up from their children might think twice. What if Adam Lanza´s mother had thought twice about how and where she stored her guns?

It is rare for someone to break into the house of a stranger and then break into a gun case in order to get a weapon. Far more common is the unprotected gun stolen from a relative or family friend, or a child finding a loaded gun under a pillow.

If health insurance is mandatory, why not gun insurance? Things are out of control.

I remember reading ´Watership Down´and learning that a gestating rabbit has the ability to re-absorb its fetuses when conditions portend extreme odds against survivability. I believe that was based on availability of food and water rather than the inability to recognize or fear a natural predator.

So the poll tax (which limited voting to those who could pay the tax)was outlawed, and there isn´t even a constitutional guarantee of voting. This is a similar strategy designed to keep people from exercising a right that is actually constitutionally guarantee.

Kind of a neat idea. After a year or two, th government can simply subpoena all of the gun insurance records and know who has weapons.

Insurance is only the tip of the iceberg...wait until it is only sold through government exchanges...make sure your gun is registered...the tax man will be around to make sure it´s insured, or collect some penalty, and/or impound your uninsured firearm.

The thing about mandatory insurance is the thing about all these other dopey plans. It forces people who harmed no one to do something against their will.

Criminals and dangerous crazy people who shoot other people with guns are not going to go out and purchase gun insurance, so such a law would only put a burden on the law abiding population who never shoot anyone with their guns.

Proposing such gun insurance would make Obama´s crony Warren Buffet happy as he owns the insurance companies, so we will probably see Obama give any gun insurance proposals that come up a boost shortly.

In principle the idea is right. Put an insurance fee on practices and policies shown to increase harm to innocent people. Gun free zones should still be allowed by municipal government, but they should pay an insurance fee based on the proven attraction to mass shooters, and the resultant massacres that will occur.

I don´t accuse the liberals of actively desiring the deaths of kindergarten students, but I´m waiting for a fact-based reason for their deadly policies.

Meanwhile, making them get insurance may be a reasonable requirement.

The citizens of Colorado and Washington should all carry marijuana insurance.
