How would Steve Jobs
return cash to his shareholders?

Fortune, by Philip Elmer-DeWitt

Original Article

Posted By:LOL Thomas, 2/8/2013 3:38:02 PM

After Thursday´s Wall Street drama -- in which a media blitz orchestrated by hedge fund billionaire David Einhorn got a rise out of Apple (AAPL) management and a pop in the stock price -- I have a few thoughts about what´s going on. (Snip) Einhorn is lobbying ordinary investors to vote against transparency and shareholder rights! Second, the more I look at Einhorn´s preferred stock option, the less I like it. To get a feel for its complexity and the effect it might have on the value of Apple´s common stock, I encourage you to read through the e-mail exchange

Comments:
Whatever Einhorn’s intentions are, he comes across as trying to shake down a company that is worth more billions than most other companies in the world. Has Einhorn proposed similar with any of his lesser investments? If not, why not?!  Steve Jobs, I hope you are watching over the Apple of your eye.

I´d have to take the side of David Einhorn. Usually it´s a bad idea to have stocks artificially low (especially when they have cash). Such a situation eventually attracts "raiders", who take the cash and dismantle the rest. Just remember, that´s what Romney was accused (falsely) of doing in his younger years at Bain.

Steve Jobs would not have returned cash to his shareholders. In the entire time that Steve Jobs controlled Apple, it never once paid out a dividend, or in any other way shared its profits with shareholders. When Steve Jobs was alive, the only way to profit from Apple was to find someone who was willing to pay more than you had for the "honor" of owning a piece of the company.

It isn´t Apple´s money. That money belongs to the Shareholders. If Apple is just going to sit on it without investing in anything, shareholders should force management to let some of it go to its rightful owners.

Jobs would have put the money toward the next unbelievably incredible, industry-changing thing.

Unfortunately, now that doesn´t seem to be in Apple´s pipeline, so they´ll become a value stock like Disney.

Egypt´s electoral commission said Sunday the presidential election will take place on May 26 and 27, 10 months after the army overthrew Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi. The man who toppled him, now retired army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, is expected to win the vote easily as he rides a wave of popularity for removing the divisive president in July. CAIRO - Three Hamas militants who infiltrated into Sinai from Gaza were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to assassinate former Egyptian defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is running for president, according to Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai. The three carried a coded letter with instructions to execute the assassination, passed by a senior Muslim Brotherhood official who escaped to Gaza. (Snip) The officials warned of a troubling development taking place among the al-Qaeda-linked organizations already inside Egypt. They said there is information the militant groups are forming a de facto chain of command, with alarming coordination between

Egyptian army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has recently intensified contact with the Russian Defense Ministry in order to expedite the completion of an arms deal. According to senior Egyptian sources that the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai quoted in a report on Wednesday, the deal with Russia includes advanced aircraft, monitoring equipment and other sophisticated weapons that would be used to fight terrorism emanating from Sinai. An Egyptian court on Sunday set Sunday for the resumption of the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 14 co-defendants for allegedly inciting the murder of demonstrators outside Cairo´s Ittihadiya presidential palace in late 2012, a judicial source said Tuesday. According to the source, the decision came one day after the same court turned down a request for the recusal of the presiding judges in the case. This morning, Lois Lerner again pleaded the Fifth, refusing to answer any of Chairman Darrell Issa’s questions.  After a few minutes of Lerner’s repetitive non-response, Issa adjourned the hearing, so we don’t know if the committee planned to address this particular issue. Cairo - An Egyptian court will begin hearing testimonies in the murder trial of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi from Wednesday, when a former top military officer will give evidence. [Snip] Morsi was present in the court, inside a soundproof glass dock to prevent him from interrupting proceedings with defiant outbursts, as he had done in previous hearings. Morsi and 14 co-defendants, including former aides, are accused of inciting the killing of opposition activists outside the presidential palace in December 2012, an incident that hastened his overthrow by the military almost seven months later.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), apparently pleased with the ouster of the former President Mohamed Morsy, have approved $8 billion in aid to Egypt on Tuesday. The Saudi funds comprise a $2 billion central bank deposit, $2 billion in energy products, and $1 billion in cash, the Saudi Finance Minister Ibrahim Alassaf told Reuters. (Snip) The rise of Mohamed Morsy´s Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt since 2011 has unsettled most Gulf Arab states, including the UAE, which feared it would embolden Islamists at home. Morsy became president a year ago in Egypt´s first freely contested election.

There were few complaints at the Woodruff polls as South Carolina´s new voter photo ID requirement was enforced for the first time in Spartanburg County. The re-do election for mayor in Woodruff is the first Spartanburg County election since the photo ID requirement went into effect Jan. 1. To the world beyond the Beltway, it might not mean much that Bob Woodward of the famed Watergate duo went public with his recent White House run-in. This would be an oversight. (Snip) Distrust of media, encouraged by alternative media seeking to enhance their own standing, has become a tool useful to the very powers the Fourth Estate was constitutionally endowed to monitor. When the president can bypass reporters to reach the public, it is not far-fetched to imagine a time — perhaps now? — when the state controls the message.

There are two stories circulating around Bob Woodward this morning. (Snip) But the White House also wanted the issue to disappear until after the election, so in conjunction with Congress it proposed (and the President specifically endorsed) an enforcement mechanism called sequestration. In exchange for agreeing to a package of $1.2T in cuts with no revenues as a failsafe, Republicans agreed to raise the debt limit high enough that it would not be reached until after the election. The significant point is that the trigger for sequestration was not the same date as the implementation date.

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'
