| British singer Shirley Bassey is to perform at this month´s Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced Friday. "We are thrilled to welcome the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey to our Oscar show," the producers said in a joint statement. "Her association with film music is world renowned and we are proud that she will be making her first Oscar appearance on our telecast."

I agree, #9. When I think of "Bond" I hear Dame Bassey singing "Goldfinger". The song requires a powerful, robust voice. My husband and I are watching every Bond film in sequence, via Netflix.

I had chills throughout her whole performance.
I can´t remember when I last looked forward to the Oscars, but I know it was decades ago.
However, this year I will watch for Dame Bassey´s performance.
I like Adele, too, but her Skyfall song won´t stand up to comparison.

Shirley Bassey is a class act who was "born above a brothel in a docklands slum," Tiger Bay, Cardiff. (Wikipedia.) And is still classy and still has her stunning voice. "What Now My Love?" is one of my favorite Bassey songs. Here´s how she performed it in 2009--backed by the band of the Welsh Guards:

She was around 73 at the time and the split in her dress looks classy because she ignores it.
I´d hate to say how Beyoncé or most of the other female singers of today compare to Dame Shirley. Maybe she´ll spark some change in the appearance of female singers.
(Dame Shirley Bassey, then afterwards Dame Shirley, is the proper mode of address--"Dame" is the equivalent of "Knight" for women. Lords and Ladies are different--can be either first name or, well, it gets complicated and off topic.)

The Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was gunned down inside his vehicle after a car drove up and shot him at ‘point blank’ range, The West Virginia Gazette reported. Mingo County Office of Emergency Services head dispatcher Willis Spence says the shooting occurred in Williamson within a block of the Mingo County Courthouse. A state official says the suspect, a male, is custody and had to be taken to a nearby hospital after being shot. According to new data released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 19.7 million new venereal infections in the United States in 2008, bringing the total number of existing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S. at that time to 110,197,000. Israel said it fired into Syria on Sunday and destroyed a machinegun position in the Golan Heights from where shots had been fired at Israeli soldiers in a further spillover of the Syrian civil war along a tense front. The mysterious disappearance of about 30 dogs in southern Idaho has baffled animal control officials and raised concerns among dog lovers after a German shepherd was found with its head crushed in a suspected ritual killing. The missing canines range widely in size, breed and age. "The dogs seem to vanish into thin air," said Debbie Blackwood, director of the animal shelter in Twin Falls, Idaho. Torrance police have cracked a nationwide shoplifting ring that reportedly targeted Southland stores selling high-priced technology. Four Chicago residents [Snip] pleaded not guilty last week to multiple counts of conspiracy to commit commercial burglary and grand theft. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
