| With about 1,300 Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey still living in hotel rooms, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to pay for their hotel stays another two weeks, according to Gov. Chris Christie’s office. The federal agency is extending its Transitional Sheltering Assistance program in New Jersey through Feb. 22, giving the displaced victims a new check-out date of Feb. 23. “We will continue to request extensions until all families in the program have a safe housing solution,” Christie said in a news release this morning. The program, which was slated to expire Saturday,

Comments: As a major snowstorm bears down on the area, I was curious as to if there was any "relief" money still being spent from the $50B+ for the Hurricane Sandy victims still in need, especially since we hear no updates on their progress as we did for Hurricane Katrina.

Stop. Just stop. For the love of all that is still sane and civil about American politics, please don´t make the Boston Marathon bombing a talking point. The vast majority of Democrats and Republicans are so far heeding President Obama´s call for a period of bipartisanship. “We are Americans united in concern for our fellow citizens," he said Monday evening. But there are outliers. The question is whether others will follow, and how soon. Former Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., warned on MSNBC that the "sequestration" spending cuts may force Boston to cut important services to pay

Geneva - Red Cross chief Peter Maurer on Tuesday condemned US drone strikes outside areas officially engulfed in armed conflict, warning against a creeping expansion of the definition of what constitutes a battlefield. Washington’s secretive and controversial use of drones was not a problem in itself, said Maurer, as in the context of an armed conflict drones are considered legitimate weapons. “But if a drone is used in a country where there is no armed conflict…there is a problem,” the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross told reporters in Geneva, urging the “very restrained use” of

A right-wing media pundit from the United States has called for all Muslims to be killed in a ‘sarcastic’ tweet made in response to the Boston Marathon bombings. Erik Rush, a regular on Fox News, appeared to attribute blame to Islamic extremists following yesterday’s blasts, in which at least three people were killed. “Let´s bring more Saudis in without screening them! C´mon!,” he wrote on Twitter. Another Twitter user asked, “Are you Already Blaming Muslims??” – to which Rush reportedly responded: "Yes, they´re evil. Let´s kill them all." Rush later said his tweet was “sarcastic”,

North Korea is a remarkable country. How else would a small state with no economy to speak of manage to create a massive media panic and remain in the headlines for a couple of weeks in a row? The question remains though: if Pyongyang is not about to launch a nuclear strike on the continental United States – and it clearly is not – what has it been up to for the past three weeks? One aim of this political theatrics is rather clear: the North Korean government wants to remind the world of its existence and demonstrate that it is cheaper to make a deal than sanction it.

Supporters of abortion rights on Tuesday filed a challenge to the new Arkansas law banning most abortions at the 12th week of pregnancy, calling it a “violation of over 40 years of settled United States Supreme Court precedent” and a threat to “the rights, liberty and well-being of Arkansas women and their families.” When it was adopted last month, with the legislature overriding a veto by Governor Mike Beebe, a Democrat, who called it “blatantly unconstitutional,” the law was the country’s most stringent limit on abortion. Later in March, North Dakota pushed the limit back further, to six weeks

Washington - The bombing of the Boston Marathon on Monday was the end of more than a decade in which the United States was strikingly free of terrorist attacks, in part because of far more aggressive law enforcement tactics in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. (Snip) Only in 2009, after 13 people were killed in shooting spree at Fort Hood in Texas, did the number of fatalities in post-9/11 terrorism on American soil rise into double digits in a single year. That was a sharp contrast with the 1970s, by far the most violent decade since the tracking began in 1970, the database shows.

Washington - President Obama said on Tuesday that the bombings at the Boston Marathon were being investigated as an “act of terrorism,” though he said law enforcement authorities did not know whether it was the work of foreign or domestic groups or individuals. (Snip) It was the president’s first reference to the bombings as a terrorist attack, after a cautious first response on Monday, in which Mr. Obama did not use the word “terrorism,” even as White House officials confirmed that they were treating it as an “act of terror.” But after a morning briefing from the F.B.I. director,

Amid all the heated, emotional advocacy of gun control, have you ever heard even one person present convincing hard evidence that tighter gun control laws have in fact reduced murders? Think about all the states, communities within states, as well as foreign countries, that have either tight gun control laws or loose or non-existent gun control laws. (Snip) The dirty little secret is that gun control laws do not actually control guns. They disarm law-abiding citizens, making them more vulnerable to criminals, who remain armed in disregard of such laws. In England, armed crimes skyrocketed

Washington - Guantanamo Bay detainee Samir Naji al Hasan Moqbel penned an anguished op-ed for The New York Times yesterday about his suffering behind bars for 11 years — but there was no mention that he was allegedly picked up at Tora Bora in Afghanistan and is believed by US intelligence to have been among a group of hardened fighters protecting Osama bin Laden. (Snip) But a once-secret Pentagon document put out by WikiLeaks — and posted on a Times Web site chronicling all the detainees — paints a very different picture of Moqbel as a devoted member of al Qaeda’s fighting

What does the trial of a Philadelphia doctor who is accused of performing illegal late-term abortions by inducing labor and then killing the fetuses have to do with the debate over legal abortion? Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said today that the Kermit Gosnell trial proves that federal funds should not be used for abortions — an especially odd conclusion to draw given that riders attached to appropriation bills already prohibit the use of federal funds for abortions, except in cases of rape or incest. (Snip) But the effort to use this case to “prove” that abortion is wrong, is wrongheaded.

If you turned on the TV Sunday morning, chances are you saw Marco Rubio. The Florida Republican appeared on seven weekly news programs, including two Spanish-language shows, to promote an immigration reform bill he and a bipartisan group of senators are preparing to unveil this week. The bookings were no accident. The conservative lawmaker’s massive pitch to the public signals he is ready to sink or swim with this legislation, which he and fellow “Gang of Eight” colleagues hope will lead to the first comprehensive immigration law in 27 years.

Friends and allies of Baroness Thatcher expressed ‘surprise and disappointment’ last night as it emerged President Obama is not planning to send any serving member of his administration to her funeral. Whitehall sources have revealed that the U.S. delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz. Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. Speculating on possible link,” Russert tweeted following the explosions.

His passing went unnoticed and undocumented, but on Monday, prosecution and defense lawyers struggled to get Philadelphia´s chief medical examiner to say whether he was stillborn or killed by Gosnell after being born alive during an abortion.

Two explosions occurred today near the finish line of the Boston Marathon,

BOSTON -- The bombs that blew up seconds apart at the finish line of one of the world´s most storied races left the streets spattered with blood and glass, three dead, including an 8-year-old boy, more than 140 wounded and gaping questions of who chose to attack at the Boston Marathon and why. Federal investigators said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings one of the city´s most famous civic holidays, Patriots Day. The impending introduction of legislation to overhaul the country’s badly strained immigration system received an extraordinary endorsement on Sunday from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, who, after holding back for weeks, appeared on no fewer than seven television talk shows to explain and defend a plan that he said would be “a net positive for the country, now and in the future.” It was a striking show of confidence from Mr. Rubio, one of eight members of a bipartisan Senate group that has been crafting a plan to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants;

Is media bias to blame for lack of Gosnell coverage? Or something far more banal? The trial of Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell would seem to have all the elements of a spectacular news story: shocking allegations, horrifying visuals, sympathetic victims. Yet until late last week, much of the national media was silent as testimony about Gosnell’s alleged “house of horrors” abortion clinic rolled out. Much of the media attention outside Philadelphia, in fact, centered on how little media attention the story was receiving outside Philadelphia.

MSNBC contributor Joy-Ann Reid told the host of Now, Alex Wagner, that she thought President Barack Obama’s response to the attack on the Boston Marathon on Monday was powerful and comforting in a way that President George W. Bush’s response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, was not. She accused Bush of being unavailable to the American people for the “first couple weeks” after the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Reid told Wagner that the president’s statement actively combatted the intention of the terrorists, which is to make their targets feel “discombobulated.” “Having, sort of
