Panic rises as sequesters grow near
Washington Times, by Stephen Dinan and Susan Crabtree

Deadline legislating is once again the talk of Washington, with all sides now demanding an end to the automatic spending sequesters — even though just a few weeks ago many of them seemed to be bracing, or in some cases even welcoming, the $85 billion in cuts divided between defense and domestic needs. President Obama’s senior advisers huddled Wednesday with leaders in the defense industry to try to enlist them in his push to raise taxes to replace some of the cuts, while a group of defense-hawk Republicans filed bills in the House and Senate to cancel the defense cuts

This article seems like nothing but drivel to me. The cuts are not even cuts, just reductions in rate of increase.

The Wash Times used to be okay - what happened?

Mark Steyn, "Sequestration sounds like castration, only more so: it would chop off everything in sight. It would be so savage in its dismemberment of poor helpless America that the Congressional Budget Office estimates that, over the course of a decade, the sequestration cuts would reduce the federal debt by $153 billion. Sorry, I meant to put on my Dr. Evil voice for that: ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE BILLION DOLLARS!!! Which is about what the United States government currently borrows every month. No sane person could willingly countenance brutally saving a month´s worth of debt over the course of a decade."

Cutting into the bone on defense? Are you kidding. How about canning a few thousand DOD lawyers. Stopping some of the enviro-weenie programs. Getting rid of the PX system. Bring home our troops in Europe and Japan. Who´s a threat in Western Europe outside of the ECB.

There are 535 electeds in DC, of both parties, who think their most important function is to spend money. Especially spending on spome pork project or another back in the home state/district to show the voters that they are bringing home the bacon. There is so much waste, fraud and abuse in the federal appropriation process that it defies comprehension. At one time it was reported that of every federal dollar spent on some program, 78 cents went to administration whereas the other 22 cents made it to the beneficiaries. That´s a butt-load of overhead.

Demonrats have their panties in a twist because half of the sequestration cuts come from their precious and duplicative entitlement programs. They could care less about the military and are even advocating cutting it some more. Meanwhile, they bemoan the military cuts. Hypocrits.

To get an idea of how bloated the fed. govt. is check out http://php.app.com/fed_employees10/search.php You will see a drop down menu labeled agency. Click on that and see just how many agencies there are in the govt. Then note that this list does not include "Employees involved in security work, the FBI, CIA, Defense Department, nuclear materials, IRS, and jobs essential to national security"; nor does it include employees of "the White House, Congress, the Postal Service, and independent agencies and commissions." We are doomed. By the way, you can type in the name of a federal employee (not excluded from this list) and discover their salary. I am presuming that 2010 is the most recent year available. And I´m presuming that the fed govt employee roster has only increased since that time.

Unlike just about any other government spending, the defense industry creates real jobs.Of course Obama hasn´t and doesn´t care about jobs or job losses so there´s no motivation there for him on this.

He simply wants to use the issue to wring more tax hikes out of people, who are getting fed up with his spending sprees on other idiotic ideas. For example, why are we giving a foreign car company,Toyota,a billion dollars to open a factory here that produces battery cars, when battery cars are barely selling.

The more Obama gets republicans to cave on tax increases, the more it hurts their party reputation, that´s what this is about. The House had a proposal to avoid sequester and Obama and the left turned their noses up at it.

$85 billion / $3.796 trillion = 2.2%

Federal spend is almost 4 TRILLION dollars, and they´re fighting over a 2 PERCENT cut.

Federal Debt now comes to over $50,000 per person. That´s an average house, for a married couple.

The Obama administration warned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday not to react too aggressively to the fast-moving developments in Ukraine, where pro-Western demonstrators forced the nation’s Moscow-backed president from power over the weekend. National Security Adviser Susan E. Rice said the situation unfolding in Kiev “reflects the will of the Ukrainian people and the interests of the United States and Europe,” and that Russia would be making a “grave mistake” if it sends in military forces to try to reverse the developments — or to seize control of pro-Moscow eastern Ukraine. Editorial cartoons often aren´t pretty, to paraphrase Steve Martin´s observation about the perils of comedy. But a cartoon in the Opinion section of today´s New York Times is downright ugly. The cartoon, alluding to this year´s brutal winter, suggests U.S. Department of Commerce "Strategies for Dealing With the 2014 Icicle Surplus." Among them are using icicles as "locally sourced hydration devices," "temporary doorsteps," and "brainteasers for dogs." Then comes a suggestion that one immediately looks at again, in disgust and disbelief -- icicles can also be used as "self-destructing sabers for dispatching climate-change deniers."

President Obama is stepping up his efforts to coalesce and energize the Democratic base for the 2014 elections, backing off on issues where his positions might alienate the left, and more aggressively singling out Republicans as being responsible for the country’s problems. Voter turnout in midterm elections tends to be much lighter than it is in years when the country is picking a president, which means that it is crucial to maximize the enthusiasm of the party stalwarts who are most likely to show up at the polls. That helps explain why, in several sensitive policy areas, Obama recently has
