WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has directed the Justice Department to give Congress´ intelligence committees access to classified legal advice providing the government´s rationale for drone strikes against American citizens working with al-Qaida abroad, a senior administration official and Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday. A drumbeat of demands to see the document has swelled on Capitol Hill in recent days as the Senate Intelligence Committee prepares to hold a confirmation hearing for John Brennan, who helped manage the drone program, to be CIA director. Those demands were only intensified by the leak this week

REP. STENY HOYER (D-MD), HOUSE MINORITY WHIP: I was just on television and they played a clip of Rush Limbaugh before that. And Rush Limbaugh said: we ought not to compromise, because we don´t have anything in common. With them. Meaning Democrats. My response was: oh, I think Rush Limbaugh is wrong. We´re all Americans, and we´re all elected here by Americans -- to serve them and to serve their country. To serve our communities and our neighbors. And to try to do things that make sense. Americans elected all of us from different places, different interests.

As Senate heads towards its August recess, tempers are getting short. As Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, began to speak on the Senate floor about an appropriations bill, it was clear that other senators were milling about and talking after a previous vote. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., stepped in, asking the presiding Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis. "Madam president, have senators sit down and shut up, okay? It´s unfair. Sen. Collins has something to say. It´s just not polite." It´s been a tense few weeks for senators on both sides of the aisle. The the implementation of

The Chattanooga Times Free Press has fired editor Drew Johnson after criticizing President Obama in an article that quickly went viral, titled “Take your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President,” the day President Obama visited the city. According to the paper, the headline was “inappropriate” and “outside of normal editing procedures.” “It was not the original headline approved for publication, and Johnson violated the normal editing process when he changed the headline,” the Free Press wrote Thursday. “The newspaper’s decision to terminate Johnson had nothing to do with the content of the editorial, which

After three years on a vegan diet, former President Bill Clinton says he doesn’t crave steak. But cutting back on bread has been tough. "Heavily processed carbs, you really have to control that," Clinton told AARP in a recent interview about his eating habits. The former president, now 66, went on a strict diet after a health scare in 2010, and he says he´s kept it up. "I just decided that I was the high-risk person [for heart problems], and I didn´t want to fool with this anymore. And I wanted to live to be a grandfather," Clinton said.

The House Judiciary Committee provided Republican members of Congress Wednesday with an immigration packet to help prep lawmakers heading back to their districts over August recess. “This recess packet has been put together to help you communicate to your constituents the importance of immigration reform and the House Republican plan to produce solutions that actually fix the problems that plague our immigration systems,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte wrote in the packet introduction. The “Immigration Resource Kit,” obtained by The Daily Caller, features four sections, the first three laying out the committee’s goals, starting with strengthening border security and immigration enforcement.

In an interview with the Spanish-language television station Univision, Anthony Weiner opened up (a bit) about why he chose the name “Carlos Danger” for his online exchanges with Sydney Leathers. “It was a joke in my personal life between me and one person,” the New York City mayoral candidate said. “I’m not going to comment on anything about the information that that person has chosen to release. They can do whatever they want, try to harm me in any way that they want. I’m moving forward.” Since releasing transcripts of her chats with “Danger” to a gossip site,

Four years after United Nations auditors declared that the U.N.’s billion-dollar program for moving people and equipment on peacekeeping charter flights was a mess, the world organization still spends too much to rent airplanes and helicopters, still favors a few suppliers of equipment over those who might want to bid for the work, and still doesn’t have the tools to keep track of its sprawling and overpriced system. Moreover, an examination by Fox News of U.N. procurement records shows that the results of the deeply flawed air charter system are hugely unfavorable to

Unfortunately, the fall of Rome is a pattern repeated by empires throughout history ... including ours? A group of libertarians gathered in Las Vegas recently for an event called “FreedomFest.” We debated whether America will soon fall, as Rome did. Historian Carl Richard said that today’s America resembles Rome. The Roman Republic had a constitution, but Roman leaders often ignored it. “Marius was elected consul six years in a row, even though under the constitution (he) was term-limited to one year.” Sounds like New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg. “We have presidents of both parties legislating by executive order,

President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that

Serial sexter Anthony Weiner’s wife partly blamed herself last year when her horndog husband confessed to her that he was at it again. Friends and family told People magazine that Huma Abedin was kicking herself at the time for bailing out of couples counseling and focusing more on their newborn baby boy. But, thanks to a new round of joint therapy that continues even now, the couple was able to put the relapse behind them. “They really became a unit, and she feels much closer to Anthony now,” a relative told the magazine. That’s a long way from how Abedin

Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.

The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,

Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.

If we learned anything about Barack Obama in his first term it is that when he starts repeating the same idea over and over, what´s on his mind is something else. The first term´s over-and-over subject was "the wealthiest 1%." Past some point, people wondered why he kept beating these half-dead horses. After the election, we knew. It was to propagandize the targeted voting base that would provide his 4% popular-vote margin of victory—very young voters and minorities. They believed. He won. The second-term over-and-over, elevated in his summer speech tour, is the shafting of the middle class. But
