Scientists: Earth-like
planets ´Right next door´

Fox New [New York] & Associated Press, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:kennedylaw, 2/6/2013 4:03:02 PM

Earth-like worlds may be closer and more plentiful than anyone imagined. Astronomers reported Wednesday that the closest Earth-like planet may be just 13 light years away. That planet hasn´t been found yet, but should be there based on the team´s study of red dwarf stars. Galactically speaking, it´s a stroll across the park. "We now know the rate of occurrence of habitable planets around the most common stars in our galaxy," said study co-author David Charbonneau. "That rate implies that it will be significantly easier to search for life beyond the solar system than we previously thought."

Comments:
The most "Earth-like" planet we may ever find is even closer than that. It is called the planet "Venus."

Venus orbits a yellow dwarf star, it is almost exactly the same size and mass as Earth and is very close to the same orbit (relatively speaking). Nothing that we have found so far in any other solar system even comes close.

If Venus had a moon and a magnetic core its atmosphere might look a whole lot more like Earth´s. Those are little details that we have no way of detecting in exoplanets.

That´s true but I dare you to live on Venus for one second! I certainly don´t think you would want to try breathing either...

Heck...it´s only 13 light years away...no problemo.

My galactic calculator says that it will take over 300,000 years to get there at space shuttle speeds. Don´t expect any vacation packages soon.

My point is that you are even less likely to find life on any of the "Earth-like" and "habitable" planets that have been detected outside of our solar system than you are to find life on Venus.

If we ever detect a planet in another solar system that orbits a similar sun, is the same size and mass as Earth, and has almost the same orbit as Earth, there will be no way to determine if the planet is "Earth-like" or "Venus-like" or "Mars-like."

I suspect that there are a whole lot more Venuses and Marses out there than there are Earths.

Only 13 light years?!......any starship with a warp engine can get there.

The artickle actually sez...
nothing has actually been found "13 light years away" yet...

If you read all of it, the three likeliest mentioned in the study are located
300 to 600 light years away.

Yawn.
These come-on headlines are like the falsely advertised lottery jackpots.
You actually only get 36 percent of what´s touted as the "jackpot."

Likewise, globull whoreming and most other hype is false teaser headlines hiding the
less interesting reality.

Okay, now in perspective: 13 light years away- that´s 4 units called parsecs- a real term, not just Star Wars and Star Trek. It´s a unit about 20 trillion miles long. So, the "New Earth would be only 80 trillion miles away (80,000,000,000,000). How far is that, really? If you were in a space capsule moving as fast as we can make a space craft go, for now, it would only take you 1.7 billion hours- that´s just 194,000 years!

That´s a little more than "Right next door"

I don´t know what it is - - but the lefties will surely think of something.

If they can find a way to make us stop dying, then what´s 194,000 years? If we are going to live forever, we will certainly need somewhere to be and something to do.

Problem with space travel is that humans are designed for gravity and we have to have better propulsion. 35k per hour is just not fast enough.

No transitional life forms on Earth + entropy + irreducible complexity of life processes = fatal lack of evidence for evolution. Actually, any one of those kills the notion of life evolving from non-living matter. So...let´s prop up our humanist state religion by looking for another Earth. And let´s use taxpayer money to do it.

The good news is that as time goes on we´ll build bigger telescopes, develop better detection techniques and finally get some real answers.

My guess is that life is everywhere on millions of planets and impossibly far away. Until then, we have our imagination.

During oral arguments today at the Supreme Court, Justice Antonin Scalia and attorney Ted Olson had a pointed exchange over whether same-sex marriage is a fundamental right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Scalia's argument, which was advanced by Chief Justice John Roberts before him, was that when the institution of marriage developed historically, it was not done with the explicit intent of excluding gay and lesbian couples.

President Obama on Friday blasted Mitt Romney for using “scare” tactics in claiming that U.S. car companies are moving jobs to China, and the Republican challenger warned in another battleground state that reelecting the president would lead to another showdown in Congress next year over the debt ceiling. Five days before the election, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has ruled out trying to work with Mitt Romney should he win next week. There was a video leading the Drudge Report on Thursday afternoon of a poor black woman with messed-up teeth saying she's voting for President Obama because he gave her a free phone, and perhaps you have some questions about it. Questions like: Is this video racist? Is Obama really giving away phones? Is anyone really bothered by these Obama Phones? And, come on, this is just blatant racism, right? We'll try to answer them.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth.
