The USPS lost 15.8 billion last year. They expect that cutting out Saturday mail will save 2 billion. While this is a good start, it won´t save them. Are they going to press the unions for concessions to make up the other 13.9 billion? I think not.

Ah Ha! Starting in August I will only receive junk mail 5 days a week. Super.

Shut it down.

The free market will pick up the slack and make a profit.

They are a phoney as the cyclist they sponsored.

Since my mail is by contract & only delivered 3 days a week, big deal. Most people will probably appreciate only 5 days of junk mail instead of 6.

Why wait till August? There is a Saturday this week.
Perhaps they can save more money if they only deliver one day a week.
Or do what grocery stores do...close down, change the name, open again, crushes the union.

If they would just charge the junk mailers and the non-profits begging us for money the same amount they charge us peons, they would make enough profit to deliver 7 days a week, and twice on Sundays.... And use Ferraris as delivery vehicles.

It is the expensive pensions and benefits that keep them in the red. Nothing will improve until this is corrected.

No word yet on whether postal workers can still retire at age 45 on lifetime six-figure pensions and eternal healthcare benefits for everyone they´ve ever known.

I would not miss the US Post Office if it went away. We have had a mailman who barely speaks English for twenty years; our mail service is awful and we get many letters addressed to our neighbors. I complain, and the mailman gets angry, knocks on my door and proclaims, "I do good job." The management of the post office is overpaid, gets unearned bonuses, and they gave Lance Armstrong 3 million dollars. Does that make sense? Of course it does not make sense, but the post office does what it wants, spends money foolishly, because it knows the taxpayers will have to bail them out again, and again.

So why not start it this Saturday? I sure won´t miss them.

I know that there are problems, but my small post office is great. They are homey, friendly, and extremely helpful.

I live in the country, so my mail is delivered at my roadside mailbox by car. I subscribe to two daily newspapers, which, if this new policy is approved and a Federal or state holiday falls on a Monday, will mean that I will not receive my daily papers until Tuesday. I note with interest that packages will continue to be delivered on Saturdays. My mailman has complained to my about how the USPS delivers packages that were initially consigned to UPS. I wonder how much this practice contributes to UPS´ bottom line.

It won´t save anything if they don´t cut staff. By the way, does anyone besides me think going to the doctor is going to be like going to the Post Office once Obamacare is up an running?

Actually, #6, it is the junk mailers who provide the lions share of revenue to keep the UPS running.

I was at my post office today and some postal workers have retired. Wonder what incentive was in their retirement package ?
