Court: NYTimes´s Request for New
York City Gun Owners Violates Law

Weekly Standard, by Daniel Halper

A New York appellate court has ruled that the New York Times´s request for a list of gun owners in New York City, under the Freedom of Information Law, violates the state´s statute. The ruling overturns in part a lower court´s ruling. "Order and judgment (one paper), Supreme Court, New York County (Jane S. Solomon, J.), entered November 1, 2011, granting the petition to the extent it sought an order directing respondent, under the Freedom of Information Law (Public Officers Law § 84 et seq.) (FOIL), to provide an electronic copy of a database,

I´d be more worried if I wasn´t on the list, as criminals would know who to rob.

God, I´m half-serious. That could actually happen.

Thoughts on the Texas primary results

Texas, the nation´s second largest state, held the nation´s first primary yesterday. There were no great surprises in the results: the two governor candidates, Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Wendy Davis, had no serious opposition, and Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Pete Sessions were renominated over opponents some labeled Tea Partiers by wide margins. Texas does not have party registration: Any voter can vote in either party´s primary. That means that primary turnout gives some indication of the balance between the parties. Some national Democrats have embarked on a project to “paint Texas blue” -- to make the Democratic party

Air-dropping himself into Kiev Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the Russian seizure of Crimea is "not 21st-century, G-8, major-nation behavior." He said Mr. Putin should allow "international observers" to enter Crimea. International observers? This calls to mind Humphrey Bogart´s Fred C. Dobbs facing the gang of Mexican bandidos in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre": Dobbs: "If you´re the police, where are your badges?" Chief bandido: "Badges? We ain´t got no badges. We don´t need no badges!" We may assume Mr. Putin would say the masked Russians patrolling Ukrainian Crimea are "international observers." As of this week, it´s official. Vladimir Putin has turned

On a presidential visit to Russia, Ronald Reagan had an unlikely encounter with a KGB agent posing as a tourist: future Russian president Vladimir Putin (pictured above with a camera around his neck). Iconic Photos (via Tabitha Hale of Rare) has the backstory for the photo: In May 1988, President Ronald Reagan travelled to Moscow for his 4th summit with Mikhail Gorbachev. The Soviets prepared a grand welcome; buildings across from the Kremlin were repainted, streets repaved and trees and flowers planted along the boulevards. [...] The most telling incident was only revealed 20 years later. In the above photo, the man with

Vienna, Austria -- As Russia continues its military occupation of the Crimean district of Ukraine, as Putin enunciates a doctrine of military intervention in support of ethnic brethren, and the West ponders what might be done, Europeans begin to think again about the 1930s and the origins of World War II. The Russian historian Andrei Zubov, for example, has published a sophisticated comparison between Putin´s seizure of Crimea and Adolf Hitler´s annexation of Austria, seeing both as the beginning of a chain of events with fatal consequences not just for the subjects of the aggression but for the aggressors themselves.

Lois Lerner attorney: The case is over now

Ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s attorney Bill Taylor held a press briefing Wednesday after his client pleaded the Fifth Amendment at a House Oversight hearing, prompting Oversight chairman Rep. Darrell Issa to adjourn the hearing. It remains unclear whether Issa will seek to hold Lerner in contempt of Congress. Taylor told The Daily Caller and other reporters that Lerner has not waived her Fifth Amendment rights as Issa claimed and that Lerner believes the entire issue is over for her now. Taylor also said that he did not read Issa’s most recent report but is sure that it is inaccurate and that

Another Illegal Obamacare Edict?

President Obama is planning to break the law, once again, in an effort to protect vulnerable Democrats in the Senate. According to news reports, “the White House will announce a new directive allowing insurers to continue offering health plans that do not meet Obamacare’s minimum coverage requirements.” In the absence of this “directive,” health insurance companies would have to cancel millions of health policies just a few weeks before November’s congressional elections. Obama’s edict would theoretically forestall, until after those crucial midterms, a tsunami of voter outrage that would inevitably drown the reelection prospects of many Democrats. It’s not clear, however,

Yet another damning revelation about the Clintons: Daughter Chelsea preferred imitation maple syrup over the real thing. In Dining at the White House, former presidential chef John Moeller recalls his urging another cook to give the first daughter what she wants, even if it seems just plain wrong. As Tim Carman recently wrote in the Washington Post, Moeller likes to share an anecdote to explain why a White House chef needs to be ego-free. The Clintons, Moeller remembers, had just hired a new cook, and he was eager to impress. Chelsea Clinton wanted pancakes for breakfast. The newbie noticed real maple syrup

Where Lois Lerner goes, drama follows. On Wednesday, the former IRS officer again invoked the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee. That precipitated a heated exchange between the committee’s Republican chairman, Darrell Issa, and Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, who called the hearings “un-American.” And that spat has become the story. No doubt that is exactly what Cummings had in mind. Because it distracts attention from the substance of the hearings — and from the questions raised by e-mails and public remarks Lois Lerner wrote, received or made when she was IRS Director of Tax Exempt Organizations. Since the end of the Cold War, perhaps no academic idea has been more debated—and more dismissed—than Samuel Huntington´s notion that a global struggle between cultures, a "clash of civilizations," would replace the ideological divide between the West and the Soviet bloc. But the current crisis in Ukraine, and the uneasy standoff between the country´s generally more pro-Russian eastern half and its more Westernized west, invites a new and far more favorable look at Huntington´s thesis. The late Harvard University political scientist´s views may even point the way to a resolution, one that will take into account both the "Eurasian" self-identity

The only possible thing that could top this would be an amicus brief from Dave Berry. Steven Driehaus is the sore-loser Democrat who is suing Susan B. Anthony List for independent ads they ran in the election that cost Driehaus his Ohio congressional seat. I can’t imagine he has much of a case, but it’s made it to the high court anyway.

At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years. Most modern scientists agree that there is a direct correlation between the increase of droughts and global warming, according to Think Progress.

A shocking poll released Tuesday shows overwhelming majorities of people in Virginia, New York and New Jersey support a national gun registry. Even in the southern state of Virginia — which has gone blue in recent years — 63 percent want the federal government to track all guns. NRA Spokesman Andrew

As a U.S. senator, Barack Obama won $48 million in federal funding to help Ukraine destroy thousands of tons of guns and ammunition--weapons which are now unavailable to the Ukrainian army as it faces down Russian President Vladimir Putin during his invasion of Crimea. In August 2005, just seven months after his swearing-in, Obama traveled to Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine with then-Indiana Republican Senator Dick Lugar, touring a conventional weapons site. The two met in Kiev with President Victor Yushchenko, making the case that an existing Cooperative Threat Reduction Program covering the destruction of nuclear weapons should be expanded to
