The Disgusting Consequences
of Plastic-Bag Bans

Bloomberg, by Ramesh Ponnuru

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 2/5/2013 1:25:39 PM

Conservatives often point out that laws, no matter how benign they may appear, have unintended consequences. They can reverberate in ways that not many people foresaw and nobody wanted: Raising the minimum wage can increase unemployment; prohibition can create black markets. The efforts in many cities to discourage the use of plastic bags demonstrate that such unintended consequences can be, among other things, kind of gross. San Francisco has been discouraging plastic bags since 2007, saying that it takes too much oil to make them and that used bags pollute waterways and kill marine animals. In 2012, it strengthened its law.

Better read the article. It´s not the plastic bags that are killers. It is more than likely the reusable bags that are causing higher incidence of disease due to eColi and salmonella.

And the Los Angeles Times, in a feature on reusable bags, found that most were made in China.

My daughter sometimes works as a checkout girl at a grocery store. She says reusable bags are often disgusting, and she doesn´t want to touch them. Think of this, though: she has to touch them, and she can´t run and wash her hands before she helps the next customer -- so some of that filth spreads to people like us who don´t use dirty "green" bags.

She tries to get around the problem by bagging meat and fresh produce in plastic before she drops them into the reusable bags, from a distance. And yes, that defeats the purpose, but she tells the customers that she doesn´t want to contaminate their bags. Heh.

Most amusing! The fruits, nuts and flakes in that big Granola bowl known as ´California´ are *finally* taking some real environmental steps towards eliminating that pesky ´human´ population that infests the place...

The ´best laid plans of mice and men´ don´t hold a candle to San Francisco Sanctimony.

Do they still allow the guys from ´Nancy Pelosi´s San Francisco´ to use plastic or rubber thingys on their John Thomas? Or is that relegated to ´biodegradable fabrics´ as well now?

Personally, I´m still waiting on the Robin Williams prediction about the San Andreas fault cutting loose, so we can watch ´em all surf to Denver...

Plastic bags breakdown. Put one in sunlight and see how rapidly it decomposes.

Palmdale, Ca. still allows plastic bags. I get them at Walmart, and save them. They can be reused many times. Eventually they can be used as trashcan liners.

Liberals, is there anything they know that´s right?
BTW..Speaking of consequences, when our kids were little, we had a dishwasher that always left a small puddle of water on the bottom of glasses and cups. I always had to dab them with a towel before putting them away. I told our kids, that if we were liberals we would solve this problem by drilling a teeny, tiny hole in the bottom of each cup so the water would drain out.
Four of our five kids are conservatives. They must have listened to me.

The best use of a plastic bag I can think of is to convince Libs that rebreathing their air will save the planet...

I like the line in the article: ´The best course for government, then, is probably to encourage people to recycle their plastic bags -- or, maybe, just let people make their own decisions.´

I live in San Francisco and I can tell you this ban was another of the "brilliant" ideas of former Supervisor and current beleaguered sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. (You know the sheriff who beat his telenovela actress wife and refuses to step down from office.)

The vast majority of the citizens who live here are opposed to the ban and it has actually gotten worse - if you wish to purchase a paper bag at the grocery store its $.10 a bag, going up to a quarter and all of that money goes to the store not the city.

We didn´t vote for this ban it was pushed upon us by a vote of the Board of Supervisors. What they don´t get is people continue to purchase plastic garbage bags, lunch bags, etc., so plastic bags still exist and are used.

The ban is a huge FARCE - its nothing more than a TAX which benefits stores and not the city. They didn´t factor in the cost to each person to purchase reusable bags, nor the cost of water and soap to wash, plus the electricity and gas to wash and dry them.

Sounds just like the findings about those "child seats" in the grocery carts.

The reported results of testing for contamination...
fecal matter, E. coli, etc
Told this to a friend in SanFran two years or more ago. She said Ewwwwww!

Walmart provides antibacterial wipes for your shopping cart now at the entrance.
And I use them all over the cart, the handle, the edges, etc.
Why not? It´s "free" and it works for me.

Hemisphere: Venezuela´s price and currency controls have wrought what they always wreak: monster shortages. And it stinks, literally, with toilet paper, diapers, soap and deodorant joining drugs on the list. That shutoff from global standards is what prevents willing buyers from acquiring goods from abroad, the source of 80% of Venezuela´s consumer staples. No foreign currency, no purchases. Further down the line, price controls have driven more shortages as costs to produce in an economy with a 56% inflation rate have made it impossible to turn a profit.

Conclusions of a 19th century contemporary of Alexis de Tocqueville suggest the latter. Staple shortages in Venezuela are exacerbating, as mirrored by restricted sales in many stores across the country. The supply of personal care products fails to meet demand. Only one or two brands of a single item can be found on shelves. Similarly, drugs stocks are running low. In a bid to meet demand, pharmacies have also been limiting the sale of certain drugs to only two items per person. Since April 2012, the Central Bank of Venezuela has been reporting shortage of personal care and home cleaning products, which sales are restricted as well. Today, First Lady Michelle Obama urged Americans via her "Let´s Move!" initiative to challenge their family members to eat one new fruit or vegetable per week in March to faithfully observe the occasion. "March is National Nutrition Month and you can celebrate by challenging your family to try a new fruit or vegetable each week," First Lady Michelle Obama said in an e-mail to supporters today. Though the AP managed to slip Scott´s name in the headline of the report, both news organizations seemed to agree: Scott´s death was newsworthy only because of her romantic association with a legendary rock and roller.
