Better read the article. It´s not the plastic bags that are killers. It is more than likely the reusable bags that are causing higher incidence of disease due to eColi and salmonella.

And the Los Angeles Times, in a feature on reusable bags, found that most were made in China.

My daughter sometimes works as a checkout girl at a grocery store. She says reusable bags are often disgusting, and she doesn´t want to touch them. Think of this, though: she has to touch them, and she can´t run and wash her hands before she helps the next customer -- so some of that filth spreads to people like us who don´t use dirty "green" bags.

She tries to get around the problem by bagging meat and fresh produce in plastic before she drops them into the reusable bags, from a distance. And yes, that defeats the purpose, but she tells the customers that she doesn´t want to contaminate their bags. Heh.

Most amusing! The fruits, nuts and flakes in that big Granola bowl known as ´California´ are *finally* taking some real environmental steps towards eliminating that pesky ´human´ population that infests the place...

Do they still allow the guys from ´Nancy Pelosi´s San Francisco´ to use plastic or rubber thingys on their John Thomas? Or is that relegated to ´biodegradable fabrics´ as well now?

Palmdale, Ca. still allows plastic bags. I get them at Walmart, and save them. They can be reused many times. Eventually they can be used as trashcan liners.

BTW..Speaking of consequences, when our kids were little, we had a dishwasher that always left a small puddle of water on the bottom of glasses and cups. I always had to dab them with a towel before putting them away. I told our kids, that if we were liberals we would solve this problem by drilling a teeny, tiny hole in the bottom of each cup so the water would drain out.
Four of our five kids are conservatives. They must have listened to me.

Is there anything that liberals don´t screw up? I even have problems with the grocery store conveyor belt - that has got to be contaminated from meat packages being placed on it all day. I would not use reusable grocery bags.

Just a reminder: Plastic bags were brought about by the liberals as a way to save the environment back in the day. But, the memory hole must now be fed with that information, because now plastic bags destroy the environment.

My husband and I had this exact discussion just last night.

Another wacko lib idea - on a visit to the Bay Area last year I saw an ad on the community bulletin board at Whole Foods for classes on how to crochet your recycled plastic grocery bags into a bed for your cat. I kid you not.

I live in San Francisco and I can tell you this ban was another of the "brilliant" ideas of former Supervisor and current beleaguered sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. (You know the sheriff who beat his telenovela actress wife and refuses to step down from office.)

The vast majority of the citizens who live here are opposed to the ban and it has actually gotten worse - if you wish to purchase a paper bag at the grocery store its $.10 a bag, going up to a quarter and all of that money goes to the store not the city.

We didn´t vote for this ban it was pushed upon us by a vote of the Board of Supervisors. What they don´t get is people continue to purchase plastic garbage bags, lunch bags, etc., so plastic bags still exist and are used.

The ban is a huge FARCE - its nothing more than a TAX which benefits stores and not the city. They didn´t factor in the cost to each person to purchase reusable bags, nor the cost of water and soap to wash, plus the electricity and gas to wash and dry them.

Sounds just like the findings about those "child seats" in the grocery carts.

Walmart provides antibacterial wipes for your shopping cart now at the entrance.
And I use them all over the cart, the handle, the edges, etc.
Why not? It´s "free" and it works for me.

I wonder how many of those who insist we all use cloth grocery bags also lecture on the dangers of cross contamination inside the kitchen? I cringe whenever the person in front of me at the grocery store loads everything into one filthy reusable bag.

We have three dogs. We have found a very good use for plastic store bags. Enough said.

My Mom lives on the Central Coast, where plastic bags are banned. She asks me to send her plastic grocery bags all the time. That´s all they use in this part of the Upper Midwest, and despite their use, the country here is unspoiled and beautiful. Go figure; most people don´t litter.

Shopping today, I saw these mesh reusable/washable bags that will take the place of the little bags for produce.

up in Mendo land Willits City (of all places!) has declined the Mendo county wide plastic bag ban, I´m thinking that extra 20 minute over the hill and back are going to be a good investment (until gas gets to be too expensive) - in our area the tactic was to use High School students to give it public exposure and the Ex of Earth First! Judi Barri (who happens to run the local waste station/CO.) giving full city and county push
