| It wasn’t flashy or filled with special effects, but Dodge Ram’s Super Bowl commercial that featured the late radio broadcaster Paul Harvey’s tribute to U.S. farmers might have won the hearts and minds of viewers Sunday night. The two-minute spot featured a series of stark photos of farmers at work. Along with a montage of still images, Harvey’s distinctive voice delivers the narration: his “So God Made a Farmer” speech, which he gave in 1978 at the National Future Farmers of America Convention. He died in 2009 at age 90. Ram commissioned 10 noted photographers, including National Geographic icon

I am an old fan of Paul Harvey. Best ad all night. Brought years to my eyes. I am not a regular churchgoer but I was appalled by the vodoo, anti-God insulting other ads. The Tide ad mocking Catholics who believe in stains and stigmata I found especially galling.

The ad was the best of the night, easily. Slate has a blog post or something up saying they cobbed it from a commercial on YouTube from farms.com. But either way - fantastic commercial. Using the actual Harvey audio was simply spectacular. The AB Clydesdale ad was a close second. :sniff:

I miss Paul Harvey. Those farmers work to pass on their farms to their children, but thanks to Obama, the death tax will force the kids to sell the farms to pay the death tax. There is another utube video of Paul Harvey entitled If I were the Devil. I highly recommend that everyone listen to it and weep for their Country. Paul Harvey saw this coming.

Loved this ad. I´ve watched it a couple of times. My husband didn´t know who Paul Harvey was, poor man. I kept saying "Page 2!" and he kept saying "I really don´t think I ever heard him".
That said, I will never buy a vehicle from the government regardless of how much I love their advertising.

Like it or not, the media is a powerful influence upon individuals and society as a whole, no doubt about it. The media can present factual information which encourages the best in human nature or the worst. Today´s media/TV/hollyweird´s focus has been weighted down with the worst for several decades now, but now Americans clearly are starving to see a return to the very best, as this commercial proved. This video´s focus on the American farmer touched hearts and we want to see more productions like this for obvious reasons.
...Is anyone in the dems´ media listening & getting a clue from the public´s response to this?!

Is it a successful ad campaign, if people love your ad but are no more likely to purchase your product afterwards? That´s me.

People who live in the cities have no idea where their food comes from. It just shows up in their stores and who thinks about that? I live in the country and we grow our own food. That is the difference between those who count on the stores too meet their needs and ours. When the stores no longer have food, I will have mine.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — As many as 25 students at a Massachusetts school were denied lunch this week — with at least some forced to dump their food in the garbage — because they couldn´t pay, school officials and parents said. Outraged parents said some students at Coelho Middle School in Attleboro cried when they were told by a worker for the district´s food service provider they could not eat on Tuesday because they couldn´t pay or their pre-paid accounts were short on funds. This story was co-produced with NPR. Imagine filing your income taxes in five minutes — and for free. You´d open up a pre-filled return, see what the government thinks you owe, make any needed changes and be done. The miserable annual IRS shuffle, gone. It´s already a reality in Denmark, Sweden and Spain. The government-prepared return would estimate your taxes using information your employer and bank already send it. Advocates say tens of millions of taxpayers could use such a system each year, saving them a collective $2 billion and 225 million hours in prep costs and time, according to one estimate.

OAKLAND, Calif. — In recent months, journalists covering crime and other stories here have themselves become victims of crime, robbed of expensive cameras, sometimes at gunpoint. In less than a year, every major television news station in the Bay Area has been a victim, some more than once. One experienced newspaper photographer has lost five cameras. In the most brazen episode, a group of men punched a KPIX-TV cameraman last November while he was filming at midday in front of an Oakland high school. The robbers fled with his camera while it was still recording.

Sacramento — In his seven-year career with the Denver Broncos, running back Terrell Davis, a former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, dazzled fans with his speed and elusiveness. At the end of his rookie year in 1995, he signed a $6.8-million, five-year contract. Off the field he endorsed Campbell´s soup. And when he hung up his cleats, he reported for the National Football League Network and appeared in movies and TV shows. So it may surprise Californians to find out that in 2011, Davis got a $199,000 injury settlement from a California workers´ compensation court for injuries related to football.

For more than three decades, Chinese women have been subjected to their country´s brutal one-child policy. Those who try to have more children have been subjected to fines and forced abortions. Their houses have been razed and their husbands fired from their jobs. As a result, Chinese women have a fertility rate of 1.54. Here in America, white, college-educated women—a good proxy for the middle class—have a fertility rate of 1.6. America has its very own one-child policy. And we have chosen it for ourselves. Forget the debt ceiling. Forget the fiscal cliff, the sequestration cliff and the entitlement cliff.

SAN DIEGO - California was going from cold to colder Friday as a chill expected to bring the biggest mercury dips in years descended on much of the state. The Grapevine section of Interstate 5, the key artery linking southern and northern California, was shut down Thursday night. Investigators wouldn´t say how she was killed. Lt. Jim O´Connell said in a news release that Stanworth was arrested for investigation of murder and booked into the Solano County Jail. California has millions more guns than it did 10 years ago. It also has thousands fewer gun injuries and deaths each year. Those are two simple facts that, depending on whom you ask, have everything or nothing to do with each other. Last month´s horrific Connecticut school shooting has reignited the debate over gun control in California, a state with some of the nation´s strictest gun laws. State legislators will likely take up additional gun law proposals later this year, ranging from further limits on ammunition purchases to requiring regular background checks for gun owners. If recent trends hold, that

Gov. Jerry Brown and California lawmakers struck an upbeat tone in recent weeks as they enjoyed their most positive budget outlook since the economic downturn. Whether that mood survives the winter depends on Washington. State budget experts say the biggest immediate threat to California finances is a recession triggered by automatic federal cuts and tax hikes, absent a political deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." The state´s biggest federal program, Medi-Cal, is spared from automatic cuts. But a new recession could threaten the state tax revenue that serves as the lifeblood for California government. President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

According to a White House statement, the Obama administration believes the current rules allow some wealthy individuals "to accumulate many millions of dollars in these accounts, substantially more than is needed to fund reasonable levels of retirement saving."
