| Buenos Aires, Argentina — Argentina announced a two-month price freeze on supermarket products Monday in an effort to break spiraling inflation. The price freeze applies to every product in all of the nation´s largest supermarkets — a group including Walmart, Carrefour, Coto, Jumbo, Disco and other large chains. The companies´ trade group, representing 70 percent of the Argentine market, reached the accord with Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno, the government´s news agency Telam reported.

This is the next step after a spendthrift government doesn´t change course. After stiffing bondholders and raiding pension plans, Argies are now going to see empty supermarkets.

#4 beat me to it. Price freezes don´t address the problem (central bank monetary policy), they only make it impossible to do business, and shortages result. It wouldn´t surprise me if this budding Eva Peron is clueless to the history of price controls. A remarkable picture of this occurred in Germany just after WW2 when the then-chancellor lifted price controls (which were a component of US occupation policy, BTW). OVERNIGHT shelves were restocked.

I do remember Nixon´s wage and price controls. I recall he started by freezing the price of meat temporarily just before the election. It must have worked... for him.

Now all the people will have all the food they want at prices they can afford to pay. And the greedy food profiteers will have to answer to the people.

Argentina was a wealthy country prior to Juan and Eva Peron. But a headlong rush into fascism bankrupted the country and spun it into chaos from which has never fully recovered. Obama is warmed-over Peron. History does repeat itself.

Washington — The Obama administration said Wednesday it will sell 200 million shares — or 40 percent of its remaining stake in General Motors Co. — back to the automaker and announced plans to completely exit the Detroit automaker by March 2014. The Detroit automaker said it will purchase 200 million shares of GM stock held by Treasury for $5.5 billion — or $27.50 per share — nearly $2 above the stock´s closing price on Tuesday. GM shares jumped sharply on the news and were up 7.5 percent to $27.36, or $1.90, early afternoon in very heavy trading.

RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
