For the last couple of days, I’ve been writing about American culture and American politics. The two are basically inseparable, I find. Anyway, for the first part of the series, go here; and for the second, go here. I will now wrap up. There is a defeatist strain among conservatives. Some say, “You know, we’ve done our best. We’ve tried our best in politics. Let’s just give up, and tend to private life, such as it is. Let’s look after our families, our places of worship, our friends.

As the 2012 election approached, conservative enthusiasm grew. Mitt Romney was drawing huge crowds while Barack Obama spoke in half-filled stadiums. All the passion lay on the right, while the left was discouraged with a promised messiah who proved merely a politician. Tehran — Iran has agreed to abandon its nuclear-weapons program in a historic diplomatic achievement certain to dominate tonight’s foreign-policy presidential debate, and dramatically reshape the electoral landscape. “This is an extraordinary breakthrough,” said Deputy Undersecretary of State Jonathan Ebert Jr., lead negotiator for the U.S. “It’s a tribute to the hard work of our diplomatic team and President Obama’s visionary leadership.” According to Ebert, the momentous deal was struck late Sunday night after President Obama called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and personally apologized for a Madonna video the Iranian leader found offensive.

Following my weekend column on the Administration’s disgraceful behavior over Benghazi, a commenter called Pilipo Underwood pops up: "Mawk Steyn’s sophistry is simply astounding! Willard Romney started the politics before we even knew the basics of the attack in Benghzi. And his essays just drip with vituperation. Such a chip on his shoulder, one thinks he would have learned after his Conviction for Hate Speech." If only Capitalization could Make It So. I’ve never been Convicted of Hate Speech.

As the president of the United States was asserting his support for religious freedom at the United Nations Tuesday, his Department of Justice was filing an appeal in the case of the Newland family of Denver, who were granted a preliminary injunction in July to protect their Hercules HVAC business – for now – from the Department of Health and Human Services abortion-drug, sterilization, contraception mandate. Since he first became a presidential candidate, President Obama must have spent millions of dollars in legal expenses to combat dozens of so-called "birther" challenges seeking the original documents pertaining to his birth. As president, he famously issued an electronic document on the White House website in 2011; the document purported to be his long-form birth certificate, though it is apparently a forgery. In addition, he has taken great pains to hide the paper trail of passport records, college transcripts, and other data -- all of which a prospective employer might require of a job applicant.

ONE man here weighs just 77 pounds. Another, 98. Last thing I knew, I weighed 132, but that was a month ago. I’ve been on a hunger strike since Feb. 10 and have lost well over 30 pounds. In light of the explosions that have rocked Boston on Patriots’ Day, during the city’s annual marathon, NBC reporter Luke Russert took to Twitter to speculate that today’s horrific events could possibly be related to the 1993 government siege on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas — an incident often attached to conversations about “right-wing terrorism” and anti-government violence. “I was at Fenway Park w my dad and @mikebarnicle during Waco which was on Patriots Day in 1993. The Saudi Arabian man who is reportedly in police custody following the Boston Marathon bombing was chased and tackled by bystanders shortly after the blast, according to CBS.
