| With Super Bowl 2013’s kickoff two hours away, and San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens fans free to flow into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the government’s restrictions on air traffic have gone into effect. That means that the small airplanes towing advertising banners over the downtown area in recent days are supposed to be grounded effective 3:30 p.m. But they appeared to disappear from the skies an hour earlier. As part of the security plan set up for the game, no unauthorized air traffic is allowed within a 10-mile radius of the Superdome, up to 18,000 feet, until 11:59 p.m.,

Rick Warren said it´s been difficult to deal with some of the hate mail and online comments he´s read since announcing Saturday that his son had committed suicide. "Grieving is hard. Grieving as public figures, harder. Grieving while haters celebrate your pain, hardest," Warren wrote on Facebook on Monday night. Warren has been deluged with words of support both at his Saddleback Church in Orange County and on the Web. “Kay and I are overwhelmed by your love, prayers, and kind words,” the pastor wrote. But there have also been many words of hate

Kermit Gosnell had been Sherry West´s doctor for more than 20 years and gave her a job when she was ill and out of work. Still, West testified, she hated working in the room where Gosnell performed abortions - never more than the night a staffer asked for help with a problem at Gosnell´s Women´s Medical Society clinic in West Philadelphia. "There was this clear glass pan, and I saw it, and I thought, ´What do you expect me to do?´ " West testified Monday at Gosnell´s murder trial. "It wasn´t fully developed,"

He won a second term, but Barack Obama isn’t done fund-raising. The president will appear at a cozy reception for fewer than 65 guests with tickets priced at $32,400 per couple at the Manhattan home of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and his designer wife Georgina Chapman on May 13, Page Six has exclusively learned. The invitation explains attendees get “a frank and intimate discussion with the president” where they can ask questions, and afterward Obama will “say thank you to each guest and take a photo with them.” A Weinstein-hosted fundraiser in August brought out

A homeless man, oblivious to President Obama’s passing motorcade, took BB gun practice in the nearby woods and refused to drop his weapon when confronted by Connecticut cops, officials said today. Obama was speaking yesterday at the University of Hartford when police, stationed along the president’s route to Bradley International Airport, heard noises coming from a nearby wooded area around 5:50 p.m., said Bloomfield police Capt. Stephen Hajdasz. A detective from the neighboring town of Simsbury ordered the man — identified as 27-year-old Joseph Stravinskas — to drop what appeared to be a rifle, according to Hajdasz.

A woman who worked at a Philadelphia abortion clinic has testified how she was handed a glass pan carrying a screaming newborn with no eyes or mouth and told to deal with it. Sherry West, who is a witness in the murder trial against her former boss Dr. Kermit Gosnell, said that when the tiny ´specimen´ screamed ´it sounded like a little alien´. West is testifying in the case under a deal with prosecutors after she pleaded guilty to third-degree murder involving the death of a 41-year-old woman at the clinic. Gosnell, 72, is charged with murdering seven babies

North Korea poses a “clear and direct threat” to the United States, the chief of the U.S. Pacific Command told a Senate panel Tuesday. Pacific commander Adm. Samuel Locklear said Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile tests are a threat to U.S. national security and regional peace and stability. He noted that North Korea is keeping a significant percentage of combat forces in the demilitarized zone, and said the United States and South Korean forces are "ready today" to respond should the Kim Jong Un regime stage an attack. Senators pressed Locklear to elaborate on how the U.S. military

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) has asked the FBI to investigate the recording of a campaign strategy meeting in which the lawmaker and his staff made disparaging remarks about actress Ashley Judd. In the recording, obtained by Mother Jones, McConnell and his aides debate the merits of attacking Judd’s mental health, religion and family values. Judd had been considering a 2014 Senate run against McConnell but opted against the race last month.(Snip) “Obviously a recording device of some kind was placed in Senator McConnell’s campaign office without consent. WASHINGTON —A liberal grassroots organization is running ads featuring the face of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz as it urges Americans to tell their senators to support universal background checks for gun buyers. Organizing for Action — President Barack Obama’s re-election-campaign-turned-nonprofit — started running its online ads on Facebook and in search engines today. More than nine out of 10 Americans support universal background checks, according to a recent poll by Quinnipac University. The ads come as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., looks to move a gun-control bill to the Senate floor for a vote.

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, are expected to attend what will be the most elaborate funeral to be staged in London since the death of the queen’s mother in 2002. It will be the first funeral of a prime minister that the queen will have attended since Winston Churchill’s in 1965. Thatcher, who died Monday at age 87 after years of declining health,

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea on Tuesday urged all foreign companies and tourists in South Korea to evacuate, saying the two countries are on the verge of nuclear war. The new threat appeared to be an attempt to keep the region on tenterhooks over its intentions. Analysts see a direct attack on Seoul as extremely unlikely, and there are no overt signs that North Korea´s 1.2 million-man army is readying for war, let alone a nuclear one. South Korea´s military has reported missile movements on North Korea´s east coast but nothing pointed toward South Korea.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....
