The crisis of conservatism
on both sides of the pond

Daily Mail [UK], by Melanie Phillips

Original Article

The agony of the US Republicans, engulfed by an existential crisis since the second term victory of Barack Obama, reminds me so much of the UK Conservatives’ similar crisis after the accession of Tony Blair to power in 1997.[Snip]The Tories, aghast at the inversion of the natural order by which they assumed they had a divine right to rule, looked in bewildered mortification upon the upstart Blair whom they found it impossible to dislodge--and arrived at precisely the wrong conclusion about both conservatism and British society. It was a fundamental error that I believe the Conservative Party is still making

Conservatives aren´t losing ground, the left is gaining by population explosions in the dependency crowd. That´s the dilemma. How do conservatives win over voters without handouts?
Common sense,balanced books,job growth aren´t catching on.

The only way for the left to lose is liberal policies affecting them adversely. But even then the tin cup crowd will be very tolerant. One example is blacks and latinos suing Bloomberg over his soda cap. Another example when the left starts getting slapped with Obamacare costs and that´s going to happen.Liberals are going to lose jobs, get their hours cut and pay more at retail and drs offices.Medicare doctors are going to hang it up.

Ms. Phillips has little understanding of US talk radio, Fox News, and the Tea Party. Her source of information must be the Leftist press in this country. Ironic.

Principled conservatism never had anything to do w/Republicanism; little more than secular progressive politics. As for the modern Tories, their decay began after WW2 w/the defeat of Churchill; five decades before Blair. Phillips is clueless.

Britain is preparing for a total withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year amid a security stand-off with President Hamid Karzai. Nato has been planning to keep a slimmed-down force--including 500 UK personnel--in the warzone after 2014 to train and assist Afghan forces. But the Afghan leader, who will step down after elections in April, is stubbornly refusing to sign an agreement that would allow 10,000 US troops to remain. Yesterday ministers at the Western military alliance--including Britain’s Defence Secretary Philip Hammond--agreed to draw up plans for a complete pull-out unless a deal is thrashed out.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz previewed the likely 2016 Republican presidential attacks on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday, slamming the presumptive Democratic nominee as ´consistently wrong on domestic policy and foreign policy.´ And he lambasted her for clinging to a health insurance overhaul proposal when her husband Bill Clinton was president, saying ´"Hillarycare" ... would have been every bit as disastrous´ as he believes the Affordable Care Act has become. Mainstream media outlets have ´already moved her into the White House,´ he complained of Clinton, who was also a U.S. Senator before moving to the State Department, during

One day before the guffaw-inducing October 1 launch of the Obamacare program´s healthcare.gov website, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough was telling friends that ´when we turn it on tomorrow morning, we´re gonna knock your socks off.´ Less than three weeks later, President Barack Obama asked McDonough whether it would ever be possible to make the website function reliably. ´Can it be patched and improved to work, or does it need to be scrapped to start over?´ the top White House aide recalled the president asking him on October 17. Vladimir Putin mobilised more than 150,000 troops and an armada of ships yesterday for a drill to test the combat readiness of forces in western Russia as tensions over Ukraine continue to grow. In addition to the soldiers--nearly twice the British Army’s manpower after planned cuts--880 tanks, 210 aircraft and 80 warships will take part in the operation. The manoeuvres raised fears that the Russian president may be planning to send forces into Ukraine after the toppling of its Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovych. Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu said unspecified measures were also being taken to protect the country’s Black

A new poll has some worrying news for President Barack Obama--most Americans are fed up with his leadership. Many are also deeply worried about the direction in which the country is heading. The CBS News/New York Times survey revealed on Wednesday that 59 percent of people polled were disappointed in Obama, and 37 percent said they are very disappointed. While 40 percent of Americans claimed to be satisfied with the president, only 10 percent are ´very satisfied´ with Obama´s performance so far. For the past three years, when seeking enlightenment about the Syrian crisis, I have often talked to Alastair Crooke, a former MI6 officer. Mr Crooke, who left government service a decade ago after a long career, now runs a think tank called Conflicts Forum, which maintains contact with organisations such as Hizbollah and governments such as Iran, when official contact has been broken off. I have learnt to respect and trust Mr Crooke, who has the invaluable habit of being right. The extraordinary claim in Rossiyskaya Gazeta will inevitably be seen as a smokescreen for similar suspicions that Russia is now shielding former ally Yanukovych, possibly at the headquarters of the Black Sea fleet in Crimea. A chilling video of Maryland police silencing an innocent student who was recording the arrests of two other people has civil libertarians outraged. The arrests were made at night on the streets of Towson, Maryland. A University of Maryland-Baltimore County student who witnessed the arrests decided to record them using his cell phone.
