I was having a really good day yesterday when it call came crashing down when I read a post on a friend and colleague’s Facebook page. We had lost a mutual friend and colleague. Lee Rodgers died early yesterday morning after many long hours of heart surgery and attempts to save his life. I immediately began to shake and then the tears flowed and flowed as I buried my face in my hands. He was not only a friend of mine and a former co-worker. Lee was instrumental in my pursuit of talk radio as a career.
Comments: With SuperBowl XLVII tomoorow, the deaths of Ed Koch and Barney, and the continuing political squabbles, keep in mind and prayer "Uncle Lee" Rodger´s passing just past midnight on Thursday. While he was never nationally syndicated - he should have been.
For those who never heard him (or forgot), check out "A Life in Radio" musings still on his blog-site www.radiorodgers.com, and listen to his famous Thanksgiving segment at http://tinyurl.com/turkey-fluffer. There will be tears in your eyes, a wry smile on your face, and understanding why Lee must be remembered always.
A previous article was posted here honoring Lee Rodgers and I posted my heartfelt reply. But I forgot to include one of his famous remarks during an election season. "Never fall for your favorite candidate because they´ll always disappoint you". He distrusted most political figures and I sure can see why. We will miss you, Lee. Godspeed.
I, too, had the privilege of listening to him first at night and later in the mornings.
He had a great talent for mixing in humor with serious matters. Somehow that always made the serious matters sink in more deeply for me.
He would interview people on the air that you couldn´t hear anywhere else. Many of these people have since moved on to greatness and are now household names.
At one point, he even ignited the movement that eventually removed the then-Governor of California, Gray Davis. Davis was recalled, after serving less than one year after winning re-election in 2002.
However, I think Lee´s greatest gift to us was as an educator. I, along with many other people, learned things about the world that I never would have learned otherwise. Listening to him finally completed my move to conservatism after being a lib in my misspent youth.
Along with everyone else here, I too am brokenhearted. Living in the Marxist-Progressive SF Bay Area is a difficult challenge for people like us, but Lee was a beacon that let us know we were not alone and gave a clear, uncompromising voice to our beliefs.
It would be difficult to find anyone in broadcasting today other than Rush or Levin who comes close to the intelligent and incisive commentary that Lee provided. Lee was a true "Mr. Know-it-All" and was rarely trumped. God help you if you showed up for an interview unprepared and if you didn´t show up at all, you were beyond God´s help.
Lee first started on KGO in the evenings. Monday nights were "Fight Night" when he would take on that degenerate leftist talker, Bernie Ward. Lee would always destroy Bernie. Bernie is currently doing 7 years in Lompoc Federal Prison for child pornography. It´s a pity that Lee did not out live Bernie.
Lee vowed he would never let station management tell him what to say and if they tried he would quit and sue them for breach of contract. When the Cumulus Network bought the KSFO station from ABC and took over Lee´s show, pressure was put on Lee to tone down his anti-Islamic comments. He wouldn’t and was fired without warning immediately after he finished his show one morning. Lee characterized (to me personally) the head guy at Cumulus who fired him as a "Rug Merchant".
Lee retired after this incident, he was fed-up with the radio business. I always hoped he would come back some day or maybe sub for Rush or Levin, but it was never to be.
There is a hole in my heart, I will always miss him.
Thank you #6. Yes, Lee was a true gem and one of a kind. He always made my mornings and (not being a morning person) motivated me to get up earlier than normal just to hear the show. I will miss him very much.
Lee and Susan were really good people. The Lee I knew off the air during one or more of his famous cruise ship parties and in business meetings was the same man. He was to radio what Johnny Carson was to late night talk shows.
I always listen to him and I will never forget what he said on the eve of the election last 2008,if Obama becomes president, this country will not be recognisable anymore. It filled me with dread back then.I was hoping he was wrong but sadly it might be true.
On Sunday, Chris Wallace, the host of Fox News Sunday, said that Republicans in Washington were savaging Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) behind Cruz´s back before Cruz´s appearance on the program to discuss defunding Obamacare. In an appearance on Washington D.C.´s Fox 5 to preview his Sunday show, Wallace said, "I will tell you I have never in my time in Washington seen a party so upset with one of its own members." He said he had been flooded with opposition research on Cruz--from Republicans. Later on Fox News Sunday, Wallace said these "top Republicans" gave
Highly sensitive U.S. military equipment stored in Libya was stolen over the summer by groups likely aligned and working with terrorist organizations, State Department sources told Fox News -- in raids that contributed to the decision to pull Special Forces personnel from the country. The stolen equipment had been used by U.S. Special Forces stationed in the country. Lost in the raids in late July and early August were dozens of M4 rifles, night-vision technology and lasers used as aiming devices that are mounted on guns and can only be seen with night-vision equipment. "This stuff is how we win wars
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) exclusively told Breitbart News on Monday that he believes the plan from Russian to secure Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad’s chemical weapons—a plan Assad reportedly has agreed to—would be “a great step forward” if it actually happened. “I think it would be a great step forward if Assad were willing to do it and if Russia were willing to monitor it or an international authority with Russia,” Paul, an outspoken opponent of U.S. military strikes in Syria, said in a phone interview with Breitbart News on Monday. “I think part of diplomacy and getting things
In a surprise move, Russia promised Monday to push its ally Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control and then dismantle them quickly to avert U.S. strikes. (snip) "If the establishment of international control over chemical weapons in that country would allow avoiding strikes, we will immediately start working with Damascus," Lavrov said. "We are calling on the Syrian leadership to not only agree on placing chemical weapons storage sites under international control, but also on its subsequent destruction and fully joining the treaty on prohibition of chemical weapons," he said.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told Breitbart News that Republicans in Washington are scared to fight the Democrats and President Obama on efforts to defund Obamacare (snip) "If we can get 41 Republicans in the Senate to stand together, or if we can get 218 Republicans in the House to stand together, we can win this fight," he claimed. "The dirty little secret is an awful lot of Republicans are terrified of this fight. They’re very, very happy to cast symbolic votes against Obamacare so they can go to their constituents and point to how terribly, terribly opposed to Obamacare
Sen. John McCain spent the weekend negotiating with Majority Leader Harry Reid on a deal to avert Reid´s threatened use of the "nuclear option" to change Senate rules to eliminate filibusters on Presidential nominations. Through his efforts, McCain was able to secure a complete GOP capitulation on 7 pending nominations. Reid secured all the benefits of exercising the "nuclear option" without the political cost of actually using it. Under the McCain deal, the GOP will provide enough votes to secure the 60 votes needed for cloture and proceed to final consideration of the 7 nominees. In exchange, Reid agreed
On the afternoon of July 1, 1863 – the first day of fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg – a Northern soldier propped his rifle against a tree and took careful aim at a tall, bearded Southern officer who was leading his troops forward through the woods. The Northern soldier was Sergeant Charles H. McConnell of the 24th Michigan Infantry, whose regiment and the Iron Brigade to which it belonged had been forced to retreat from McPherson’s Ridge on the west side of Gettysburg. As the blue-uniformed troops around him fell back, McConnell paused to fire his last round
As Americans gather to celebrate the anniversary of our nation´s freedom, we contemplate, on the one hand, the revolution in Egypt, where people crying out for freedom could only appeal to the military, having lost any power of self-government; and, on the other, the slow imposition of Obamacare in the United States, delayed only so that it might never be defeated, creeping gradually into every aspect of life, administered by agencies already shown to be hostile to freedom. We have much for which to be grateful--and much about which to be warned. The words of Alexis de Tocqueville in Book
Mr. Drudge discussed the Internet, dubbing it “the people’s media,” and talked about the ways in which news that is not reported in the mainstream media can be generated and reported on the Internet. He focused on the investigations of President Clinton and his reasons for creating the Drudge Report. Following his prepared remarks, Mr. Drudge answered questions from the audience. After the luncheon, he also answered questions from the media
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is fed up with Tea Party conservatives and wants Republicans to get rid of them to make life easier for Democrats in the Senate. According to the Las Vegas Sun, Reid, in an interview with "To the Point" that will air on Saturday, "said the key to solving what he has labeled as Republican obstruction is for the party to rid itself of so-called Tea Party Republicans." Tea Party Republicans in the Senate ..(snip).. have not only frustrated old bulls on the left like Reid but also institutional Republicans like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
Andrew came a-courting one day. He had been introduced to my daughter, Susie by my son Max, her brother. Max and Andrew were best friends. Just out of college, Max worked as a busboy at a high-end restaurant called 72 Market Street. Andrew was a waiter (higher status) at a nearby diner called Hal´s. Susie brought him home to seek her father’s approval. My wife, the actress Alley Mills, and I had them to dinner. Andrew sat at the table in front of a window. Holding forth, he waved his arms to emphasize some point or other, leaned back ...
During a Google+ Hangout responding to a question about immigration, President Barack Obama made a stunning remark: "This is something I’ve struggled with throughout my presidency," said Obama. "The problem is that I’m the president of the United States, I’m not the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed."
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
Fox News host Megyn Kelly has made herself the center of a racial controversy by declaring that Jesus Christ and Santa Claus are white. On Wednesday night, Kelly was responding to an article by Slate writer Aisha Harris, who wrote an article entitled “ Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore .” The popular news host told viewers of “The Kelly File,” her hit FNC program, “When I saw this headline, I kinda laughed and I said, ‘Oh, this is ridiculous. Yet another person claiming it´s racist to have a white Santa.’ And by the way, for all you kids
THE Internet has been abuzz over the spectacle of President Obama and the prime ministers of Britain and Denmark snapping a photo of themselves — a “selfie,” to use the mot du jour — with a smartphone at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa on Tuesday. Leaving aside whether it was appropriate, the moment captured the democratization of image making that is a hallmark of our gadget-filled, technologically rich era. Manifestly undemocratic, in contrast, is the way Mr. Obama’s administration — in hypocritical defiance of the principles of openness and transparency he campaigned on — has systematically tried
