Actor Stephen Tobolowsky recalls
how´Ground Hog Day´ went

When longtime character actor Stephen Tobolowsky first read the script to “Groundhog Day,” he thought it was just another comedy; nothing special. Then the movie changed, even as they were shooting it 20 years ago in Woodstock, Ill. — and it became, in Tobolowsky’s words (and mine), “one of the greatest comedies ever created.” Tobolowsky, who played persistent insurance man Ned “Needlenose Ned, Ned the Head” Ryerson, will host a special Groundhog Day screening of the film at SIFF Cinema at the Uptown. On the phone last month, he remembered the winter chill of Woodstock —

Ground Hog Day is one of those movies I´ll watch again and again.

It´s on at this moment ............. even as we ´speak´ .......... I just watched the pencil scene a few minutes ago.

The film goes from slapstick to sublimely about life in a little over 2 hours .......... and yes a lesson on how to live and learn to enjoy life.

But I had to almost be almost forced to watch it the first time because Bill Murray was such a jerk when the film opens.

A simple route along the west side of Olympia became a ride from hell Tuesday afternoon. Surveillance video from the Intercity Transit bus shows a horrific attack on a driver after a confrontation and yelling turned into a beatdown. The video shows a man swearing and harassing passengers, which drew the attention of the driver. "I told you once. I´m not gonna tell you again," the driver said to the man, warning him to tone down his language or else he would be thrown off the bus. Shortly afterward, the driver pulled the bus over and went to the back of the bus to

Pottery Barn apologized for selling a Halloween costume of a sushi chef and a kimono that an Asian civil-rights group had complained were culturally offensive. The retailer confirmed late Monday that the items had been removed from its website. “We did not intend to offend anyone with our Halloween costumes and we apologize,” said Leigh Oshirak, vice president of public relations and marketing for Williams-Sonoma, parent company of Pottery Barn. “Thank you for bringing this to our attention.” Asian civil-rights activists spoke out after the store began selling the products, a kimono and a sushi-chef outfit featuring the Rising Sun of the Japanese

Coming soon maybe to a grocery store near you — chicken from China. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) ruled recently that poultry processed in China can be sold in the United States. But first the birds must be born and raised in the U.S., Canada or Chile. Then they’re exported to China before being shipped back to the Americas. Food-safety experts worry about the quality of chicken processed in a country notorious for avian influenza and food-borne illnesses. And they predict China will eventually seek to broaden the export rules to allow chickens born and raised there.

But for Swenson, the award stands for more than his personal bravery during the seven-hour battle in the Ganjgal valley, near the Pakistan

But some in this group, frustrated at political inaction, have begun hyping the effects of climate change beyond what the science supports.

From both sides of the mountains, they helped bless the bones of 57 individuals wrapped in white cotton muslin tied with cotton string, put away with cedar boughs and tule mats within a hand-dug grave. Afterward, elder Avery Cleveland of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation knelt to burn tobacco on the covered grave, sending its smoke and a horse song on the rising wind. Trayvon Martin should have been celebrating the Fourth of July as well, hanging out with his parents and his friends, doing whatever young people do when the world around them is not treating them like would-be criminals. Instead, attorneys for the state and for George Zimmerman duke it out in a Sanford, Fla., courthouse about whether or not Martin deserved to die. Did the 17-year-old cause his own death by not turning tail and running when a stranger followed him block after block?

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa joined Megyn Kelly Thursday night to react to the uproar over him cutting off Elijah Cummings‘ mic during a contentious IRS hearing, saying that accusations he was “racist” are just “beneath response.” Issa suggested Cummings’ outburst was a “pre-staged event,” but Kelly asked, “Who cares? Let him have his couple of minutes to rip on you! Lerner appeared for a second time Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and claimed her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself. It isn´t hard to figure out why Lerner´s lips are sealed. First, she knows the House of Representatives can cite her for contempt of Congress, but Attorney General Eric Holder would decide whether she is prosecuted on that charge. Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey
