I haven´t been following this that closely - so apologies if this has already been covered - but why can´t the police/FBI pump an odorless colorless "sleeping gas" into the bunker through the pipe to harmlessly knock them out and then go in? They´ve got to know when the old man is sleeping thru some basic listening or detection eqpt, and can pipe it in then. What am I missing?

I´m sure this loon´s loving the positive feedback he´s getting for his action. Those who are giving it to him (media) obviously don´t mind small sacrifices to get a story that fits their mindset, even if the sacrifice is a five-year-old with autism.

For those who keep asking about sleeping gas, my guess is that amount needed to subdue an adult man is dangerous to a little kid. They´re both breathing the same air down there.

My bet is that he has a gas mask and sending ANYTHING down that pipe will echo into the bunker below.

He´d hear it coming before they could start pumping.

Additionally, there could be another exhaust vent somewhere else. Depending on how big the bunker is, some type of exhaust would be necessary to get rid of Carbon Dioxide.
