Argentina snubs Falklands talks
Daily Express [UK], by Macer Hall

David Cameron was “disappointed” last night after a senior member of the Argentine government refused to meet Falkland Islanders to discuss their desire to remain British. Hector Timerman, Argentina’s foreign minister, turned down the offer of talks with Foreign Secretary William Hague after hearing islanders’ representatives would also be present. They were due to fly to London for the meeting. Mr Timerman initially requested a one-to-one meeting with Mr Hague but would not accept the offer of talks involving anyone from the Falkland Island Government which Argentina refuses to

Who cares with the Argentines say or do, as they surrendered the Falkland Islands back in 1982. You have to doubt that the Argentines are in any condition to attack the Falkland Islands, take on a couple of modern UK nuclear attack submarines, along with a couple of brigades of battle hardened British troops.

This morning Suzanne Moore has written a typically pugnacious piece in the Guardian attacking what she calls “the anti-feminist backlash”. According to Suzanne, the “Right-wing establishment and its lackeys” are launching a “pre-emptive strike” on the feminist movement. Examples of these lackeys range from Liam Gallagher, through to our own James Delingpole and Toby Young, to Iain Duncan Smith. Even poor old Nick Clegg gets a good shellacking. “Women haven´t won,” she writes, “we are losing our hard-won rights. Britain´s diplomatic war with Spain over the Rock of Gibraltar escalated today after border guards turned away truck loads of concrete thought to be destined for a crucial infrastructure project. The Foreign Office issued a strongly worded statement demanding an explanation from Spain, saying the situation was "wholly unacceptable". Express Online has discovered that lorries containing concrete were refused entry at the border yesterday. It is understood the concrete was earmarked for the expansion of an artificial reef off the coast of Gibraltar, a project that has infuriated Spain. The Gibraltar government, which has already protested about what appeared to

Today, Lord Howell is a former Cabinet minister, George Osborne’s father in-law and one of the most decent and thoughtful men in public life. He has also suddenly come to more widespread attention after becoming embroiled in one of those ridiculous rows in which the British governing class now specialises. Earlier this week, Howell dared to volunteer an opinion that parts of the North of England should be used for fracking, because they are empty and “desolate”. It was as though he had proposed carpet-bombing Sunderland. Inevitably, the peer had to apologise for what he tells this

A never-before-heard tape of Monica Lewinsky telling then-President Bill Clinton that she could ´take all my clothes off´ if he agreed to an illicit meeting with her has reportedly surfaced. The tape, which records the White House intern desperately trying to lure him into meeting her, was reportedly released to the National Enquirer after it was obtained by a cleaner hired by friends of Lewinsky. It was long thought that the raunchy four-minute tape, which was recorded in November 1997, had been destroyed after the sexual affair was revealed in 1998, according to the Enquirer. The recording, made months after

In 1936, a grandson of Robert Peel, the great Victorian prime minister, travelled to the British mandate of Palestine to settle the conflict between Arabs and Jews. Why do I mention this? Well, the solution proposed by Lord Peel’s commission in 1937 is, in all essentials, the same as the one that John Kerry, the US secretary of state, urged upon the two enemies when he opened the peace talks in Washington on Tuesday. That solution is the partition of the Holy Land into two states, Israel and Palestine. “To both Arabs and Jews, partition offers a prospect – and

The US economy grew at an annualised pace of 1.7% in the second quarter of the year, the Commerce Department has said. That was a faster pace than expected by economists. It was also up from the growth rate for the first three months of 2013, which was revised lower to 1.1% from 1.8%. A slowdown was widely expected due to the impact of federal spending cuts, but also from the continuing weakness in the global economy. In March, $85bn (£56bn) of public spending was cut as a result of a deal between Democrat and Republican politicians.

Today would have been Milton Friedman’s hundred-and-first birthday. The Chicago economist is already acquiring that almost Homeric status that normally comes only decades after a man’s death. Perhaps social media have speeded up the process, or perhaps it’s the fact that Friedman’s strongest enthusiasts are often students with no direct memory of their hero. Friedman’s ghost speaks to us through YouTube. The interviews he recorded in the 1970s remain as persuasive an exposition of free-market economics as you’ll find, and are cult viewing among young libertarians. It comes almost as a shock to be

Bagged salad is being blamed for a brutal outbreak of cyclospora that has mostly ravaged the country’s mid-section. Hundreds of cases of the infection reported across Iowa and Nebraska in recent months are being blamed on a prepackaged salad mix. Officials are not sure if outbreaks in 13 other states are linked to the same salad. Iowa has been by far the hardest hit, at least 145 people have caught the nasty stomach bug. [Snip] Investigators at both the state and federal level are still working to narrow down the exact source of the outbreak.

The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,

Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.

No matter how much you may hope for it, it seems unlikely that you´ll be using the phrase "Senator Sarah Palin" with any great regularity in 2015. A new poll indicates that the former Alaska governor is about as popular in the state as Barack Obama — which is to say, not very popular at all. But even more surprising, while the former vice presidential candidate has made Alaska a central part of her public image, the state´s residents split on the question of whether Palin is all that Alaskan.
