Fashion Advice at the DIA:
´Makeup Makes You More Attractive´

U.S. News & World Report, by Brooke Berger

A week after women were cleared to serve in combat, Defense Intelligence Agency employees got a different message. "Makeup makes you more attractive." "Don´t be a plain Jane." "A sweater with a skirt is better than a sweater with slacks." "No flats." "Paint your nails." "Don´t be afraid of color." And, "brunettes have more leeway with vibrant colors than blondes or redheads." Men and women at DIA were given fashion advice in a presentation prepared by an employee at the agency this week. Susan Strednansky, public affairs officer at DIA, offered the agency´s regrets about the briefing,

I work for DIA, and I am very familiar with this incident, as it caused quite a commotion. It was totally blown out of proportion. The brief was based on a dress-for-success theme. There was a portion for men and a portion for woman. Admittedly, some of it was poorly done, and a few suggestions could have been better stated. The brief suggest men and women be conservative in their dress, including hair style and color. The brief did say makeup can make women attractive, but it also warned against too much makeup. For men, it suggested they consider their body type when selecting their clothing. In all, the brief was talking about impressions, which undoubtedly can affect how individuals are received and treated, which in the long run can affect careers. The brief should have been taken with a grain of salt and the attitude if-the-shoe-fits.... Instead, in our politically-correct world where no one can anything, including giving common-sense advice, people are loaded and cocked to pounce on anything they deem offense. My attitude -- let them learn the hard way

#14, thank you for your excellent and clarifying post.

It is a bit astounding and worrisome that Defense Intelligence Agency director Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn stated in a letter to employees re the incident that, "They´ll require some counseling (to be sure)....". Someone is going to have endure ´counseling´ because they said that makeup makes one more attractive? Good grief!! As poster #7 noted, how nice to see our taxpayer money at work.

Hemisphere: Venezuela´s price and currency controls have wrought what they always wreak: monster shortages. And it stinks, literally, with toilet paper, diapers, soap and deodorant joining drugs on the list. That shutoff from global standards is what prevents willing buyers from acquiring goods from abroad, the source of 80% of Venezuela´s consumer staples. No foreign currency, no purchases. Further down the line, price controls have driven more shortages as costs to produce in an economy with a 56% inflation rate have made it impossible to turn a profit.

Geopolitics: So are Vladimir Putin´s actions in Ukraine just self-defense, as he claims, or a sign of a new sort of war with the West? Conclusions of a 19th century contemporary of Alexis de Tocqueville suggest the latter. Back in 1839, around the time political thinker de Tocqueville made his long visit to the U.S. and found an exceptional nation, writing about it in his classic "Democracy in America," another curious Frenchman, the Marquis de Custine, made a similar pilgrimage to Russia. Fully prepared to fall in love with autocratic czarism, de Custine was instead repelled by a harsh tyranny combined with

Staple shortages in Venezuela are exacerbating, as mirrored by restricted sales in many stores across the country. The supply of personal care products fails to meet demand. Only one or two brands of a single item can be found on shelves. Similarly, drugs stocks are running low. In a bid to meet demand, pharmacies have also been limiting the sale of certain drugs to only two items per person. Since April 2012, the Central Bank of Venezuela has been reporting shortage of personal care and home cleaning products, which sales are restricted as well. Shortage stems from the price regulations enforced for more than

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas.
