Citizenship question roils both
parties as immigration
debate gets underway

Washington Post, by Peter Wallsten and Rosalind S Helderman

Original Article

Rising tensions over whether to give illegal immigrants a chance to pursue full citizenship could ruin what President Obama and congressional leaders agree is a pivotal moment in resolving long- simmering problems in the country’s immigration system. Immigrant advocates and their Democratic allies insist that now, at long last, is their time. After various failed proposals over the past decade, they finally feel they have the leverage to accept nothing less than a path to full citizenship for the millions of people living illegally in the country.

Living ILLEGALLY is the key phrase. If they had applied for citizenship LEGALLY, then maybe they would already be U>S> citizens.

Enforcement must come first and there should not be a special path to citizenship for illegal aliens.

What Republicans should support is a conditional immigration status for longtime illegal aliens who have no criminal record. That status should allow the qualified illegal aliens to live here indefinitely as long as they abide by US laws, should include employment authorization, protection under all US laws, and authorization to travel to and from the USA.

If an alien holding the conditional status wants to go further towards permanent resident alien status (a green card) that alien should be required to qualify for an immigrant visa just like all legal immigrants must do. After attaining permanent residence the alien must attain five years residence in the USA just like all other legal immigrants generally must do and only then should the alien be qualified to petition for naturalization, which if granted confers US citizenship.

You better believe that most illegal aliens would jump at the chance to get such a conditional immigration status.

Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox used to advise that the vast majority of Mexicans living and working in the USA illegally are very proud of being Mexicans and just want the ability to work here with dignity, and to be able to travel back and forth to Mexico. A conditional status would give them all that.

Obama and the liberal Democrats want a streamlined path to citizenship for just about all illegal aliens, maybe between 11 and 20 million, because they know that most would readily become Democrat voters. If the Republicans ever give the Democrats the political cover to pass what Obama is demanding, they would be committing long term political suicide, as the Democrats could garner probably 10 million new voters after such a liberal amnesty.

Hispanics will vote for big government to get freebies. To get their vote it is not just Amnesty, you would have to vote them more welfare, FoodStamps, Obamaphones, etc etc. Amnesty is a loser for Republicans. Go with Jan Brewer and Sheriff Arpaio on this one.

FTA: Some liberals wondered whether the new commission would empower conservatives like Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) to complicate the citizenship process.

Complicate the citizenship process???

The citizenship process currently is very straightforward...you live in another country, you go to the local office of the US Consulate, and you fill out an application for an immigration visa. Easy-peasy, simple to do, all legal and above board.

What we have here are a bunch of co-conspirators advocating for an easier "path" for their co-conspirators to violate the letter and spirit of a plethora of our laws. Illegal entry, check. Identity theft for employment and benefits, check. DUI and driving without a license or insurance, oftentimes check. Taking a job that a legal immigrant or American would do if it were available, check. Taking welfare, food stamps and medical in the place (or ahead) of a needy American citizen, oftentimes check.

One cannot say that every criminal alien invader does every item on the above list, but all too many people willing to ignore one law, will also ignore all other laws when convenient.

Are we a nation of laws as I was told as a child, or are we so morally weak that we need criminal co-conspirators tell us what language we are allowed to use when referring to people who have not obeyed our laws, because it "hurts their self-esteem"?

KIEV, Ukraine — The head of Ukraine’s new pro-Western government will meet with President Obama this week, the White House announced Sunday, as a defiant Russia took further steps to consolidate its hold on the Crimean Peninsula. The announcement of Wednesday’s meeting in Washington with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk came as pro-Russian forces extended their reach in Crimea, surrounding a border post in the far west and blocking Ukrainian TV broadcasts to the heavily- Russian-speaking region, which lies more than 400 miles southeast of the Ukrainian capital. There were reports of more troop movements into Crimea, with officials in Kiev estimating

Peter Beilenson dreamed of bright, affordable health-care centers in working-class neighborhoods, staffed with doctors paid a flat salary — rather than per patient — and lifestyle coaches encouraging healthier living. Tiny waiting rooms would reinforce the message that all patients would be seen quickly. A human would always answer the phone. Specialists could immediately be consulted by videoconference. And there would be free yoga. Such common-sense approaches, Beilenson believes, will eventually drive down health-care costs. Buried in President Obama’s newly enacted Affordable Care Act, he found a way to test that theory. But because of hard-to-resolve problems with Maryland’s new

Many of the headlines after day two of the Conservative Political Action Conference were about Rick Perry’s well-received speech, in which he harped on what he deemed the “two Americas”: red-state America and blue-state America. But as much as the Texas governor’s morning address impressed the crowd, it was the second event in which he participated Friday that will be far more important if the Republican Party is serious about winning more swing voters in 2016. Perry appeared alongside several other conservatives, including Grover Norquist, on a panel about criminal justice reform and how those reforms are being pushed by

Paul Ryan, addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference this week, disputed the notion that “the Republican Party is in this big, massive civil war.” “I don’t see this great divide in our party,” the GOP’s 2012 vice presidential nominee said. Ryan had a point. The notion of “civil war,” often used to describe the clash between the Republican establishment and the tea party, implies a conflict with identifiable sides. In reality, the GOP condition is more of a free-for-all. The annual CPAC gathering, conservatism’s trade show, provides a snapshot of the anarchy: The group’s much-celebrated straw poll of presidential candidates

BEIRUT — Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is taking advantage of the rift between Russia and the United States over Ukraine to press ahead with plans to crush the rebellion against his rule and secure his reelection for another seven-year term, unencumbered by pressure to compromise with his opponents. The collapse last month of peace talks in Geneva, jointly sponsored by Russia and the United States, had already eroded the slim prospects that a negotiated settlement to the Syrian war might be possible. With backers of the peace process now at odds over the outcome of the popular uprising in Ukraine,

Vladimir Putin is a lucky man. And he’s got three more years of luck to come. He takes Crimea, and President Obama says it’s not in Russia’s interest, not even strategically clever. Indeed, it’s a sign of weakness. Really? Crimea belonged to Moscow for 200 years. Russia annexed it 20 years before Jefferson acquired Louisiana. Lost it in the humiliation of the 1990s. Putin got it back in about three days without firing a shot. Now Russia looms over the rest of eastern and southern Ukraine. Putin can take that anytime he wants — if he wants. He has already

Whenever President Obama has sought to turn up pressure on Republicans on issues important to Latinos, he has found reliable partners in Spanish-language TV networks Univision and Telemundo. On Thursday, Obama came calling again — but this time, his partners became adversaries. Obama was appearing at a town hall-style event at the Newseum to encourage the Latino community to sign up for health-insurance policies under the Affordable Care Act. But the hosts, Jose Diaz-Balart of Telemundo and Enrique Acevedo of Univision, turned their sights on another issue: immigration. “Your reputation has been tarnished among Latinos over deportations,” Acevedo said, referring

President Obama sent Congress a $3.9 trillion budget blueprint Tuesday that seeks fresh spending to boost economic growth but also aims to tame the national debt by raising taxes on the rich, squeezing payments to health-care providers and overhauling immigration laws. Congressional Republicans immediately rejected the request for fiscal 2015, saying that the proposal would bust limits on agency spending that the White House endorsed in December. But the blueprint, the fifth of Obama’s presidency, was not designed primarily to influence the latest round of Capitol Hill budget talks. Instead, it charts a course for Obama’s final years in office,

Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey
