Ex-New York Mayor Ed Koch
placed in intensive care

CNN, by Laura Ly

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 1/31/2013 8:30:06 PM

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has been placed in the intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, his spokesman said Thursday. Koch spokesman George Arzt, who spoke to the former mayor this morning, told CNN affiliate WCBS that the mayor "was in obvious discomfort." "After I spoke to him ... his lead doctor and cardiologist decided that he should be put into the intensive care unit," Arzt said. Koch, 88, was hospitalized last September for anemia and underwent a blood transfusion at the same hospital. The lawyer-turned-public-servant was a U.S. congressman from 1968 until he ran for mayor

WASHINGTON -- The 162,000 jobs the economy added in July were a disappointment. The quality of the jobs was even worse. A disproportionate number of the added jobs were part-time or low-paying — or both. Part-time work accounted for more than 65 percent of the positions employers added in July. Low-paying retailers, restaurants and bars supplied more than half July´s job gain. "You´re getting jobs added, but they might not be the best-quality job," says John Canally, an economist with LPL Financial in Boston. So far this year, low-paying industries have provided 61 percent of the nation´s job growth

For Obamacare to Work,

Two beliefs continue to shape debate on Obamacare. First, pre-existing medical conditions shouldn’t prevent people from obtaining affordable health insurance. And second, people who don’t want health insurance shouldn’t be forced by the government to purchase it. These may seem to be reasonable positions. But they are incompatible. That’s been shown by historical events, and it’s now being strikingly confirmed by recent experience in the emerging Obamacare insurance exchanges. The crux of the matter is what economists call the adverse-selection problem. Uninsured people with pre-existing conditions often face tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in

Russian prosecutors are even considering whether to open a criminal case in the matter, which comes amid a rise in U.S.-Russian tensions. Videos posted online of Wednesday´s concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa show bass player Jared Hasselhoff pushing the Russian white, blue and red flag down the front of his pants and pulling it out the back.

Aetna Inc has withdrawn its applications to sell insurance plans on Maryland´s individual health exchange after it was asked to lower its rates by up to 29 percent, according to the state´s department of insurance. In an Aug. 1 letter sent to the Department of Insurance, Aetna said the required rate modifications cut premiums too low on both its Aetna and Coventry products. Aetna closed on the acquisition of Coventry Health Care this spring. "Unfortunately, we believe the modifications to the rates filed by Aetna and Coventry would not allow us to collect enough premiums to cover the cost

Bears are known for their smarts, especially when it comes to getting access to food. It´s fair to say that commercial dumpsters are especially inviting to the creatures. Remember the video of the young bear cubs who were stuck in a dumpster after their curiosity got the better of them? Well, video footage captured by a Colorado Springs, Colorado restaurant is making the rounds and is equally interesting to watch. Twice in the last week, a large bear has lumbered to the back of a popular German restaurant with a penchant for authentic weiner schnitzel, and on both occasions

Some of the earliest clues scientists had that Earth´s climate has changed over time were mismatches between the fossil record and a current ecosystem. How could this palm tree have grown in Wyoming? Why have fossils of the tropical breadfruit tree been found as far north as Greenland? These cold places must have once been warm and wet. The world is not as it has always been. And somehow, despite the tumult, species adapted, moving thousands of miles to habitats where they could survive. Won´t species today just do the same as temperatures rise in the years ahead?

Mr Mugabe´s party - which is claiming a victory - denied the accusations, saying the voting went smoothly. American scientists claim the planet is undergoing one of the largest changes in climate in the past 65 million years. Climatologists at Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment have warned the likely rate of change over the next century will be at least 10 times quicker than any climate shift since the dinosaurs became extinct. If the trend continues at its current rapid pace, it will place significant stress on terrestrial ecosystems around the world, and many species will need to make behavioral, evolutionary or geographic adaptations to survive, they said.

You don´t have to be gay or even Russian to feel the wrath of the Russian government´s homophobia. You could go to jail if you are "pro-gay," whatever that means. And that´s under just one of a growing number of hate-infused bills becoming law at a time when, as it happens, Russia is preparing to host the world in the next Winter Olympics. The perverse anti-gay legislation is inflaming an atmosphere of persistent intimidation and at times deadly violence against Russian gays and lesbians. The question now is: What should the rest of the world do?

The nation´s most active death penalty state is running out of its execution drug. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said Thursday that its remaining supply of phenobarbital expires in September and that no alternatives have been found. It wasn´t immediately clear whether two executions scheduled for next month would be delayed. The state has already executed 11 death-row inmates this year, and at least seven more have execution dates in coming months. "We will be unable to use our current supply of phenobarbital after it expires," agency spokesman Jason Clark said. "We are exploring all options at this time."

After purchasing the Boston Globe in 1993 for a then-record $1.1 billion, the financially troubled New York Times just announced it sold the 141 year-old paper to Boston Red Sox owner John Henry for a mere $70 million. That´s a straight 93% loss. Figuring in two decades of inflation would only make it worse -- as does the fact the Times retains the Globe´s pension liabilities, estimated at over $100 million. (snip) What might have sweetened the lower offer for the Times is that Henry offered a straight cash deal, which is expected to close sometime in September or October.
