America´s Suicidal Cities
National Review Online, by John Fund

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 1/31/2013 2:18:05 PM

Some major American cities are dying, and the worst part is that these grievously ill patients often are refusing to take even the mildest medicine that would make things better. Take Detroit, a city that has become a synonym for urban failure. The murder rate of one per 1,719 people last year was more than eleven times the rate in New York City. One contributing factor may be that two-thirds of Detroit’s streetlights are broken. Once the fourth-largest city in the country, Detroit’s population has dropped by almost 30 percent since 2000 to below 700,000.

It´s got nothing to do with street lights, or gun registration. Murderers don´ register their guns. We have lived thousands of years, quite peacibly, without street lives.
But two question needs asking. How come Detroit looks so like Africa? How come there are so many (percentage) of people on welfare?

Answer these, and we might start solving the problem.

One more comment. Get rid of the union labor laws, and business might start coming back. Have the schools start teaching a work ethic.

The last couple of paragraphs address a good solution. Bankruptcy would clean a lot of slates.

Romney made that same point about GM during the election. He was right. I don´t think Obama will let Detroit go down the way of bankruptcy. We´ll have to wait and see.

Broken street lights are broken by delinquents/criminals. Broken street lights do not cause murder. Murderers (evildoers, criminals, immoral human beings) cause murders.
Please speak truthfully and directly about the declining moral climate in the United States. It is aided and abetted by "authority figures" in and out of "government" who are liars, thieves, fraudsters, rapists (literally and figuratively), counterfeiters, and murderers, and cowards too.
Moral decline tracks with social/economic/political decline.
By the way, when I use the words "moral" or "morality" I mean "right conduct towards self and other - no violence".

Once the last gangsta thug moves out of the city, entrepeneurial pioneers will come in and buy properties for $10 an acre. They´ll bulldoze the few remaining houses and build anew. They´ll get rich, the new settlers will be close to downtown and work and thugs won´t be able to afford to live there. Problem solved. No sarcasm.

The broken street lights are only a sign of the conditions, not a contributing factor to killing people.

You might as well say cars are stolen because people don´t have good shoes.

But the article is right. A lot of these cities keep hurting themselves.

ATLANTA -- The South is where President Barack Obama and Democrats long have struggled, and it´s where the party´s toughest battleground will be this year in the fight for control of the U.S. Senate. Three incumbents must face the consequences of having voted for Obama´s health care law, but Republicans first must settle primaries in several states, including a challenge to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. All but one of the potentially competitive races is in a state Obama lost in 2012, and the president remains deeply unpopular among whites in the region. Republicans are optimistic they can achieve

Russia has agreed to a ceasefire in Crimea until March 21. Which gives the Obama administration four days to prevent an open war. Can anyone change Putin´s calculation in time? Now that Crimea has “voted,” the Obama administration is ready to start unveiling sanctions against Russian and Crimean leaders who are linked to what the West is calling Russia’s invasion and subversion in Crimea. But with a fragile ceasefire set to expire by Friday, the sanctions are unlikely to work in time to head off a conflict. There are signs that the short-term measures being contemplated, which include asset freezes

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should retire from the Supreme Court after the completion of the current term in June. She turned 81 on Saturday and by all accounts she is healthy and physically and mentally able to continue. But only by resigning this summer can she ensure that a Democratic president will be able to choose a successor who shares her views and values. A great deal turns on who picks Ginsburg´s successor. There are, for example, four likely votes to overturn Roe vs. Wade on the current court: Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence

It’s been a busy few weeks for Vladimir Putin. In the last month, the Russian president has hosted the Olympic Games, invaded a neighboring country and massed troops along its border. Back in Moscow, the Kremlin has cranked up the volume of hysterical anti-Western propaganda to a roar while cracking down on the last vestiges of the free media. All the while, he proclaims he wants peace and accuses Western leaders of hypocrisy and anti-Russian sentiment. If Putin wanted to do a better imitation of Adolf Hitler circa 1936-1938, he would have to grow a little mustache. Equally troubling is

A lefty friend once asked me whether I thought I held any subconsciously racist opinions. One should always be on the lookout for one’s own intellectual and moral defects, so I’ve been thinking about it, and I have a possible candidate: As I suggest in my NRO piece today, “Asian-American” seems to me to be an obviously nonsensical category, because it includes people of origins ranging from Pakistani to Japanese. But “African-American” has never seemed immediately nonsensical to me in the same way. This may be because I know a little bit more about Asia than I do about Africa,

These days it’s a commonplace to diagnose a clash between two parts of our government and conclude that both are wrong. The case at bar this week is the uncharacteristically rancorous fight between the CIA and Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Cal). On one hand is the Senate committee which has, since 2009, been investigating the Bush-era program in which terrorists would be subjected to rendition — capture and removal to another nation for interrogation — and the “enhanced interrogation methods” that have been loosely (and incorrectly) lumped together with torture. On the other hand is the CIA

For years after the 9/11 attacks, nearly all the activity at Ground Zero was downward—digging through the piles of debris, excavating a vast pit to restore the ruined transit lines, preparing the foundations for the new buildings that would emerge there. Even the memorial that opened in 2011 was an exercise in the poetics of descent—two vast cubic voids, each with water cascading down all four sides, carrying grief to some underground resting place. The memorial has turned out to be a lovely thing, but what the site still needed was something that climbed, something that spoke to the idea that

Police are investigating the possibility that the pilot of missing Flight MH370 hijacked his own aircraft in a bizarre political protest. The Mail on Sunday has learned that Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was an ‘obsessive’ supporter of Malaysia’s opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim. And hours before the doomed flight left Kuala Lumpur it is understood 53-year-old Shah attended a controversial trial in which Ibrahim was jailed for five years. Campaigners say the politician, the key challenger to Malaysia’s ruling party, was the victim of a long-running smear campaign and had faced trumped-up charges. Police sources have confirmed that Shah was a vocal political activist

By now it’s settled on most people, including Democrats, that the loss of Alex Sink to David Jolly in Florida’s 13th Congressional District was, in the words of the New York Times, “devastating” to Democrats. It’s a district Ms. Sink carried in her unsuccessful race for governor against Rick Scott, a district that Barack Obama carried in his two elections, and a district that demographically now favors Democrats. In addition, Ms. Sink raised more money and ran a better campaign than Jolly. Even Bill Clinton lent his efforts to her campaign. And yet she lost. What should particularly alarm Democrats is
