EXCLUSIVE: Your employer may share

The Equifax credit reporting agency, with the aid of thousands of human resource departments around the country, has assembled what may be the most powerful and thorough private database of Americans’ personal information ever created, containing 190 million employment and salary records covering more than one-third of U.S. adults. Some of the information in the little-known database, created through an Equifax-owned company called The Work Number, is sold to debt collectors, financial service companies and other entities. While we keep a vigil against government overreach, the credit agencies are a law unto themselves.

How many consumers even think twice when offered one of those ´loyalty rewards´ cards by a store?

It´s really a matter of consumer stalking... It´s very valuable to marketing that they have contact info on you (to streamline their efforts to target people for advertising and to make resource planning possible, by projecting demand patterns). That´s why companies are willing to offer their ´loyal´ customers such good discounts.

Just say no.

I´m a lawyer who deals with data privacy issues as a routine part of my job, and the laws are already maddening and ineffective. Unfortunately, this type of data availability and news reports that can´t even report it well end up causing people to enact even more laws that have even less effectiveness but make it harder for honest companies to comply and also cost them lots of money with no societal benefit.

Years ago, I read a story about a man who was suing a store because he was injured by a hazard in their store or parking lot. The store used the information about his purchases compiled by his use of the loyalty card, to try to claim he was drunk, because he occasionally bought beer.

When one of our children was applying for a credit card because they were going to a distant college, the card issuer called our home for verification, and inquired what college. When told which one, he said, oh, let me check, they´re in our data bank, and verified our child´s enrollment.

There is no privacy any more.

If you aren´t using cash, you should be.

Order a copy of your credit report.

When you check out and they ask your zip code, use a different one and never the same one. Those coupons the register spits out are based on your shopping.

#7 - 20 years ago the president of Sun Microsystems stated, point blank, "There is no privacy. Get over it." If it wasn´t true then, it´s certainly true now.

#8 - People who charge a purchase need to be careful about using random zip codes. Many places (e.g. gas stations) need the zip you give to match the zip on your card.

Update: Nikko Jenkins´ mental state is again under review. Douglas County District Court Judge Peter Bataillon on Wednesday granted a hearing to determine Jenkins´ competency to be tried on four counts of first-degree murder. Bataillon set the competency hearing for Feb. 12. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will present the opinions of separate psychiatrists who have most recently reviewed Jenkins´ mental state. In the two years before his release into the general population of Omaha, Nikko Jenkins wasn´t even released into the general population of his prison. The main reason: He was too dangerous to mix with other inmates. Yet prison administrators

The 2-year-old Omaha boy who unwittingly prompted a debate about the culture of gang violence was wounded three months ago in a shooting inside his own home. His 17-year-old father, D´Marco Pope, was killed last spring in what police said appeared to be a gang-related shooting. His grandmother was arrested last month after five guns were found in the house. She now sits in jail facing a weapons charge. His grandfather was sent to prison last year, convicted of a weapons charge. The little boy who was coaxed by adults to utter profanities for an online video has grown up

This will not go over well for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner. According to the new book “Double Down,” in which journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann chronicle the 2012 presidential election, President Barack Obama told his aides that he’s “really good at killing people” while discussing drone strikes. Peter Hamby of The Washington Post noted the moment in his review of the book. The reported claim by the commander-in-chief is as indisputable as it is grim. Obama oversaw the 2009 surge in Afghanistan, 145 Predator drone strikes in NATO’s 2011 Libya operations, the May 2011 raid that

Ever since Ronald Reagan left the White House in 1989 with the Departments of Energy and Education still intact, limited-government conservatives have become accustomed to disappointment. The struggle against the colossus is by its nature a losing one, and conservatives have learned to live with low expectations. But do they have to like it so much? As The Daily Caller’s Jeff Poor notes, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer laid down a celebrated defense of conservative principles Wednesday during a TV appearance with “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart. While Fox News, where Krauthammer is a regular contributor, gave this one the headline

From listening to the banal musings of inside-the-beltway Republicans, one would come away with the impression that we are just six Senate seats away from curing all our political and policy ills. These wizards of smart believe that we must refrain from engaging in risky policy battles until after the next election, when presumably, we stand to win back the Senate. To that end, they accuse some conservative groups of working to undermine a Republican majority, both by engaging in “unwinnable” fights and by working to replace incumbent Republicans instead of focusing exclusively on growing our numbers from 45 senators

It is hard not to enjoy the spectacle of Obamacare crashing on takeoff, but it is also important not to lose sight of the real issues. The essential problems with Obamacare have nothing to do with IT. A web site can be fixed, and presumably will be, but Obamacare can’t be. The fundamental problem with Obamacare is that Obama promised the impossible: more people having broader insurance coverage for less money. It can’t be done. The Democrats babbled about “bending the cost curve,” but that was pure BS. Obamacare does nothing to bring about efficiency in the delivery of medical

We discussed his role in brokering the recent fiscal deal, his outlook on future talks, and Republican expectations for divided government. President Obama’s refusal to sign a bill defunding or delaying his health care law and Republicans’ insistence that such measures be a part of any bill to continue funding government are what precipitated the ongoing government shutdown. Both sides are staking out firm positions because they are operating on the same assumption – that once Obamacare starts to roll out subsidies on Jan. 1., it will be impossible to undo, no matter how much of a disaster it is. Based on the experience across the pond, this may be exactly right. As the Washington Examiner´s Philip Klein detailed in an

Many Democrats are genuinely puzzled about Republicans’ continuing opposition to Obamacare. It is the law of the land, these Democrats say. Critics should accept it, as critics accepted Medicare. They should work constructively and across the aisle with Democrats to repair any flaws and make the law work to help people. Historical analogies are often useful, but they can be misleading. The Medicare analogy is certainly misleading: Republicans, like it or not, are behaving differently from the way they behaved after the passage of Medicare in 1965.

A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison.
