On nuclear weapons, Hagel
has some explaining to do

Daily Caller, by Rebeccah Heinrichs

Original Article

Posted By:abuela10, 1/31/2013 11:15:34 AM

Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s pick for the next secretary of defense, has begun his Senate confirmation hearings. Reports indicate the nominee believes he has some explaining to do regarding his position on the U.S. nuclear force. Small wonder: Mr. Hagel is one of six co-authors of the radical Global Zero Commission Report, which advocates for cuts so deep to the force it would bring the U.S. far below Russian levels and could tempt China to sprint to parity or superiority.

Hagel has been given the questions to be asked and his answers have been rehearsed. This will be the typical donkey and elephant show on Capitol Hill. We`ll probably see the same 3 GOP senators vote no as they did on Kerry`s nomination. The rest will blindly follow, then howl when Hagel does something stupid.

New York Soon to

New York Times, by Jesse McKinley    Original Article

ALBANY — New York, whose status as the most populous state has long been ceded, will soon fall behind Florida into fourth place, a long-anticipated drop that is rife with symbolism and that could carry potentially serious economic consequences in coming years. When the Census Bureau releases its latest population estimates on Monday, demographers expect that Florida and New York will be narrowly separated — perhaps by as little as a few thousand people — and that if Florida does not pass New York this time, it almost certainly will do so in 2014. The census figures underscore immigration trends, as foreign-born migrants continue to

The two tabloid editors at the centre of the phone hacking trial had a secret six-year affair at the end of which Rebekah Brooks wrote to Andy Coulson: “I love you ... You are my very best friend ... I tell you everything,” the Old Bailey heard. It is alleged that Mrs Brooks and Mr Coulson oversaw phone hacking and corruption at two of the country’s biggest newspapers. Details of the clandestine relationship were made public during the second day of their trial, where they are accused of overseeing a decade of illegal activity at The Sun and The News

The Oscar-winning film director Charles Ferguson has cancelled his CNN documentary on Hillary Clinton after what he described as a private campaign against the film by prominent Democrats. Ferguson said he had decided to pull the plug after being met with a wall of silence from more than a hundred people who refused to be interviewed for the documentary. He claimed that aides to the former secretary of state put pressure on CNN behind the scenes, and made clear that Clinton would only co-operate "over my dead body". He also blamed a public campaign by Republicans, who claimed the film would be

When Ted Sarandos put out the word that Netflix would begin producing original shows, he was swamped with story pitches that everyone else in Hollywood clearly had taken a pass on — including some scripts marked with coffee stains, smudged fingerprints and other telltale signs of rejection. That all changed in 2011 after Netflix bought the political thriller "House of Cards" from "The Social Network" and "Fight Club" director David Fincher.

It’s a Duck Nation, and we’re all just living in it. Last week, A&E Network’s reality show “Duck Dynasty” catapulted to become the biggest unscripted show in cable history with its fourth season premiere. With nearly 11.8 million viewers, the show about a Louisiana family that has made millions from its duck call fabrication business is on the brink of toppling “The Walking Dead.” If it does, it will become cable´s biggest show. The A&E Network, as Duck Commander patriarch Phil Robertson would say, is “Happy, happy, happy.” The show premiered in March 2012 and finished its first cycle with an average

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Democrat Anthony Weiner said that the new sexting firestorm that set his City Hall campaign reeling last week will in the end make him a stronger mayor and better able to deliver for Staten Island and the rest of the city. "I´m going to be a successful mayor because of it, because it´s going to give me a level of independence," he told the Advance in an exclusive interview. "I´m not constructing a campaign around the approval of my peers. I´m constructing a campaign around the aspirations of my neighbors."

While the administration publicly expresses full confidence in its health care law, privately it fears one part of the system is so flawed it could bankrupt insurance companies and cripple ObamaCare itself. Walter Timpone, a Christie-linked attorney whom Kelly retained after her public firing, received the subpoena served on her Friday by a New Jersey Assembly special investigative committee. The Pentagon on Wednesday is expected to announce widespread changes to rules governing religious items and religion-based physical attributes that service members can maintain while in uniform — including beards, some religious tattoos, and turbans. NBC News obtained an early draft of the new Department of Defense instruction which states that the military will make every effort to accommodate “individual expressions of sincerely held beliefs” (conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs) of service members. It goes on to say that unless doing so could have an adverse impact on military readiness, unit cohesion, good order and discipline, health and safety,

In politics, lying is the new sex. Even the lesser sin, exaggeration, is grounds for questions about your suitability to run for office. Americans may be becoming more like the French in tolerating peccadilloes (just ask Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana about surviving a sex scandal), but get a detail wrong about whether you divorced at 21 or at 19, and woe unto you. That’s what happened to Wendy Davis over the weekend. You may know her as the Texas state senator in pink sneakers who delivered an 11-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions in June.

Are you dazed and confused by Barack Obama, the nominal Democrat, whose conduct as president since 2009 has seen him sink from nearly 70 percent to 40 percent or less in the national polling, from which he has seemed to learn nothing, but still marches on? Fear not, the doctor is in: Fred Siegel of the Manhattan Institute, whose latest book, The Revolt Against The Masses: How Liberalism Has Undermined the Middle Class, explains all you wanted to know about Obama, and much else. It explains why he never became the new Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy or Lyndon B.

What’s so great about Zulu? To answer that question properly, you need to pass this test first. 1) Do you know Men of Harlech off by heart? 2) Can you name at least half of the 11 Victoria Cross winners in the film (by their nicknames where possible) without resorting to Google? 3) Have you ever found yourself stirred to ridiculous feelings of patriotism by John Barry’s magnificent film score on the morning commute? I really hope someone else answers “yes” to all three, otherwise you can chalk me up as a lone madman. Zulu--released 50 years ago this week--is

A clear majority of the American people say that the Obama administration is not competent to manage the affairs of the U.S. government, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday. Those who believe the Obama administration is incompetent weigh in at a clip of 53-42 – a margin of 11 points. In addition, more people believe that the president is not even paying attention to what’s going on than the contrary: 47-45. (That may be because the president finds out about all those “phony scandals” by reading about them in the news.) The president gets a negative score on a

The bare-bones Wendy Davis story — the one without embellishment — is sufficiently inspiring as a matrix for defying expectations. The daughter of a teenage mother and a teenage mother herself, Davis managed to beat the odds by getting a college education and Ivy League law degree, then launching a political career that’s brought her national adulation. But since Davis’ Democratic gubernatorial ambitions caught fire last year, “facts have been blurred” in the retelling of her life’s story, as reported Sunday by this newspaper’s senior political writer, Wayne Slater.
