A Pointless Amnesty
National Review Online, by Editorial

Illegal immigration is a curious subject: It is one of the few domains in which the authorities entrusted with enforcing the law feel obliged to negotiate the most concessionary terms and conditions with those who are breaking it, as though law enforcement were an embarrassing inconvenience. But the rule of law, national security, and economic dynamism are not mere pro forma matters — they are in fact fundamental, a reality lost on our would-be “comprehensive” immigration reformers.

What is it about ´Secure the Border First´ that McCain, Schumer, et al fail to understand?

If the Republican (Stupid) Party gives the Democrats political cover to pass a path to citizenship amnesty, the Republican share of the Hispanic vote will probably increase from 28% to 33% and the Democrats will end up with 10 million or more new foreign born voters by way of the amnesty. Those figures look pretty good to stupid Party politicians like John McCain.

The republicans should be talking to people as people, not racial groups, that´s the dems game.

You can completely avid the race game here by saying border and immigration laws are a rule of law issue and not intended to target racial groups.

I agree with the theme of the article. How do you enforce the rule of law and not look mean about it?

If you´re going to support "reform",Rubio´s plan is at least sane but it´s dead in the water without enforcement and there´s no way Obama is going to do that.

The first thing that should be done is classify breaking into this country as a felony which would disqualify you for government benefits. The problem would then take care of itself.

There´s a million people, already deported and still here. How much is a damn bus or plane ticket when you buy them in bulk?

That´s 20-30,000,000 new demonrat voters, if they aren´t already voting illegally. By the time you add in their families (allowed under immigration law to come here too), the total new demonrat voters will be about 100,000,000. What do you think that´s going to do to the budget deficit and the economy?

The establishment GOP is determined to move their party to the left. Calling it the stupid party is only partly right.

Poster #2: The first thing that should be done is classify breaking into this country as a felony which would disqualify you for government benefits. The problem would then take care of itself.

Along with "breaking into this country" and just as serious, are the millions of people who just melt into the crowds when it comes time to go home because they came in on a short-term visa, such as business/vacation, student or a work visa to a specific job that they no longer have.

It is inconceivable that this country is incapable of creating a biometric system to track, and deport when necessary, each and every person who enters through customs. It is equally unimaginable that a country at the forefront of technology cannot find a way to track "defendants" who have been ordered deported by a court and ascertain that the person ordered out actually leaves in a timely manner.

In addition to felony entry, the should be severe penalties for illegal immigrants and both the "sponsors" and "their dependents" who even apply for taxpayer funded benefits.

And, IF I were vindictive, I would ask that a parent who "forces" a child to break the law by bringing them along in their breaking into this country be classified as child abuse and allow the parents--no matter the age when caught--to either 1) take the child with them as they self-deport without adjudication or 2) sever all parental rights and allow the child(ren) to be adopted.

All future histories of the Obama presidency will analyze the phrase "leading from behind"—the idea that the U.S. superpower should behave as no more than a co-equal partner in managing the affairs of the world. Chapters will be devoted to laying this revisionist template over Libya, Syria and Iran. There is one area, though, in which the returns are already in on this new notion of American leadership: For five years, the U.S. has been leading the world economy from behind. It´s not pretty.

Neighbors knew Bill Buchman had a snake. But they had no idea how many snakes were slithering, coiling and dying in his North Fernwood Drive home until Wednesday. That was when police served a warrant, gagging at the stench that betrayed the elementary school teacher who moonlighted as a snake breeder. The smell rolled into the street and over a gathering of friends, neighbors and gawkers. It swept over a team of police in biohazard jumpsuits and facemasks as they pulled 182 live pythons – and more than 240 dead ones – from Buchman’s rodent-infested home.

A special Cook County grand jury indicted former Mayor Richard Daley´s nephew on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the death of David Koschman in a drunken confrontation on the city’s Near North Side, the special prosecutor said today. The grand jury found that Richard J. Vanecko "recklessly performed acts which were likely to cause death or great bodily harm to another" in Koschman’s death in 2004, according to the indictment.

In a meeting with the heads of the five service branches in 2010, President Obama offered the leaders a choice: Support my efforts to end the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, or resign. In a video obtained by BuzzFeed via a Freedom of Information Act request, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. A "vast majority" of Mitt Romney donors, establishment pooh-bahs, and an anti-conservative consultant who is the epitome of permanent political class want former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to run for president in 2016. Bush was in Las Vegas this week meeting with Sheldon Adelson, and, according to the Post, "many if not most of 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s major donors are reaching out to Bush and his confidants with phone calls, e-mails and invitations to meet." One bundler even said that a "vast majority” of "Romney’s top 100 donors would back Bush." The Post also noted that in the meantime "Bush’s

I have no objections to Jeb Bush running for president. He obviously has a wide appeal as a potential candidate. (Snip) His support of Common Core, however, will also find many who are in the conservative ranks objecting, since they fear that Common Core represents educational centralism and having the government ram federal standards down their throats. What I do object to is that Bush is already being heralded as the obvious candidate, the man to whom the big money must and will flow. As the Washington Post reports: Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a

Obamacare, the plan purportedly created to provide health coverage for the uninsured, has enrolled just 1.7% of America´s 48.6 million uninsured. News of the disastrous numbers comes as nervous Democrats and President Barack Obama, ahead of the November midterm elections, did their best on Monday´s enrollment deadline to put a positive spin on the deeply unpopular Obamacare program. (Snip) The White House now claims an Obamacare enrollment figure of six million people. However, according to The New York Times, at least 20% of those never paid their premiums to activate coverage, leaving them uninsured.

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Climate change is already having sweeping effects on every continent and throughout the world’s oceans, scientists reported Monday, and they warned that the problem is likely to grow substantially worse unless greenhouse emissions are brought under control. The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group that periodically summarizes climate science, concluded that ice caps are melting, sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, coral reefs are dying, and fish and many other creatures are migrating toward the poles or

A National Labor Relations Board official has given the green light to Northwestern University football players to form a union. The March 26 decision by the NLRB´s Chicago regional director, Peter Sung Ohr, held that scholarship football players are "employees" for purposes of federal labor law. Ohr rejected the longstanding view of Northwestern and the National Collegiate Athletic Association that players are "student-athletes" rather than employees. The new rules set rear visibility standards that automakers will initially be able to meet only by installing cameras. Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in

WASHINGTON — LeBron James wants you to sign up for health coverage under Obamacare. So do Magic Johnson and Jonah Hill’s mom. Monday is (sort of) the deadline for Americans without employer-provided health coverage to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act — the White House extended it so that anyone who’s begun to sign up by Monday can still complete the process by April 7 — and the final enrollment numbers will be an important test for a law intended to expand access for the uninsured. It’ll also be a test for the White House’s high-octane sales
