Gabrielle Giffords’ husband
smacks down Wayne LaPierre

Washington Post, by Greg Sargent

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 1/30/2013 2:13:02 PM

Perhaps the most important moment so far in today’s Senate Judiciary hearing on guns came when astronaut Mark Kelly directly confronted NRA head Wayne LaPierre over the shooting of his wife, Gabrielle Giffords. Between that exchange and another one involving Senator Dick Durbin, LaPierre’s argument was completely unmasked for the sham that it is. During the hearing, LaPierre repeatedly voiced the talking point that there’s no need to expand the background check system because criminals don’t cooperate with background checks. Kelly responded: The Tuscon shooter was an admitted drug user. He was rejected from the U.S. Army

Comments:
As if someone planning to commit murder will dutifully follow all other laws right up to the point of when they pull the trigger.

Folks, I have been mulling this over since the Newtown tragedy, and now is as good as time as any to state my opinion.

We are gonna lose on the 2nd Admendment and gun control. It is in the cards. Everyday a new shooting is blasted across the MSM. There is a concerted effort amongst the left to ram this full speed, and they are winning. Just like Obamacare, and the last election, this is being played to the ignorant low info public like so much theater.

Gun crime is not on the rise, statistically it is actually lower, but the media are intentionally playing up every shooting that might have a heart-string tug angle.

Believe me, I do not like being negative, but I do not see how we can get a positive message out to the masses.

Rep. Giffords was shot with a semi-auto pistol, rather than one of the "assault weapons" on Sen. Di Fi´s naughty list. Sadly, Giffords is being exploited as a useful idiot.

Democrat Senators are going to go down in flames in the Mid terms because of this issue.

Just a related note that, in New York State, Andrew Cuomo´s approval rating dipped from 74% to 59% solely on the new gun legislation he rammed through.

Whats more preferable, having a more effective background check system that is more likely to keep firearms out of the hands of a few dangerous mentally ill people or taking away the 2nd Amendment rights of the entire population through a major firearms ban?

Mark Kelly is a famewhore, and he is exploiting his wife - a woman who was actually ineligible to serve in congress for her ´home´
state, because she was a resident of Houston, Texas.
(I realize that is a minor point, but I thought it should be said.)

The anti-2nd Amendment crowd will pimp one victim (or family memeber) after another in a sickening, divisive exploitation.

And I´m surprised Mark Kelly had the smarts to be an astronaut. He is deliberately skating by the disgraceful mental health policies and lawsuits which shut down nearly all mental facilities in this country, allowing people who should have been involuntarily committed to roam free because it "feels good." Kelly may have had the right stuff, but no more.

Actually, it has become evident that the more the statist dems attack each of the Bill of Rights, the more law-breakers there seem to be coming out of the woodwork.

The remedies for preventing so many of the current crimes being perpatrated by mentally-ill individuals and/or by each criminal is to enforce EXISTING law and to re-examin the best way to address mental illness in this country! ...Duh!

Missus and I joined the NRA when in the Press Tirades after the Newtown SHOOTINGS.
WE REALIZED THAT THE NRA, AND 2ND AMMENDMENT WERE GOING TO COME UNDER SERIOUS ASSAULT.
Feel sorry for Ms Giffords, it was a shame what happened to her. The wackjob Loffner should have been in an institution, but the Liberals have weakened the Mental Health System to the point it virtually has no place to put the potentially, Violent Insane in a place where they can be watched and cared for.
It seems now that Ms. Giffords has become a tool of those Liberals with an anti-gun ( 2nd Amendment) agenda. She is lead around by her husband ( whose political aspirations are evident) like an organ grinders monkey. Darn Shame for her.

The background check system ALREADY demands that the information on those considered mentally incompetent be submitted to the NICS database. How about we just enforce the provisions of the current law??

"Universal Background check" is DemSpeak for Federal registration - their ´solution´ to a non-existant problem. Tyrants throughout history would agree- registration is what you need in order to conveniently take the next step - confiscation.

We are not losing on the 2nd Amendment. And there should be NO compromise. Not ONE inch.
Unless of course, you´d just like to roll over and submit. /Rant

Lose on the 2nd Amendment?, What does that mean exactly? The right to keep and bear arms for protection from criminals, tyrants, etc, is inherent to our humanity via God Himself, not the Constitution. The 2nd amendment states that a government of men can´t infringe upon that God-given right. Anything less than a constitutional convention garnering the support of 2/3 of the states for modification, whatever the fools in DC come up wih is illegal and meaningless as far as I am concerned. I and millions like me have no intention of complying with whatever those decide to do. Additionally, the LE agencies in my part of the world have no intention of enforcing the nonsense from DC either.

It has been known for centuries that it is nearly impossible to stop a determined assassin who has little regard for his own fate in the process. If the guy who shot Giffords didn´t have a 30 round magazine he could have easily been toting several 10 rounders. Perhaps he would have had to pause for a second to replace a magazine, but that´s it. Those around him would have been too panicked and surprised to do anything while he swapped out magazines. That only happens in movies. He was going to get to her, period.

Ban high capacity magazines and all you really do is create a black market for them at a higher price, you won´t eliminate them. If banning something through law made it go away, well we wouldn´t have any marijuna, lsd, heroine, cocaine, or even rape and murder, would we?

What happened to Gabrielle Giffords and those who were killed and injured at the same event is a terrible, unspeakable tragedy. But, it´s time for her husband to assist her off the stage. I thought the same thing about Jim and Sarah Brady. Their points were made, further PR is milking the awfulness to no purpose.

Sorry it happened but the gun was not responsible for your wife and her injury. It was a thing used by a demented person such as yourself. If the gun had done this to your wife, absolutely no one would walk out of a gun show alive.

Giffords´ shooter was a mentally/emotionally unbalanced young male who was raised in a liberal democrat environment. Furthermore, his parents had refused to seek help from him after repeated warnings of his strange behavior from the local college he attended, as well as the Pima County Sheriff´s office.

Mark Kelly is a liar, and should be publicly ignored and shunned.

Illegal guns obtained by the criminal element in our nation come through the same pipeline as do illegal drugs. Liberals who think that criminals or people intent on creating havoc will somehow expose themselves by going through legitimate sources for the guns are the customers of the illicit drug trade. They have to be to be so stupid.Studies done interviewing current inhabitants of the Federal prison system clearly show that criminals get their guns via the black market or steal them. Less than 2% even try getting them through legal private sales or at gun shows. But as has always been the case concerning "Utopian world" Liberals, you simply can´t fix stupid!

Tories in the blue state are uninformed concerning private sells. In the majority of state there is no registration. Whoes going to know if you sell your used property?

Will the Post report the noncomplience with NY´s new semi auto registration?

The Fed already doesn´t charge those who lie on the 4473 forms. Why because it cost to much. Do you really think they will pour money into stopping private sells where you can´t prove who owns the gun?

Go ahead make us outlaws.

Guns are easy sells. No one is going to sell one to someone who seems not quite right. It´s not worth it. Private sells are more self regulated than legal sells.

First of all, Kelly´s statement is an explicit admission that background checks don´t work because not all the crazies and criminals are in the database. Second, LaPierre´s claim that criminals won´t cooperate with background checks has nothing -- or very little -- to do with private sales. It means that criminals will get guns illegally no matter. Sure, some criminals probably get guns from otherwise legitimate private sales, but closing that "loophole" isn´t going to stop criminals from getting guns. Heck, they´ll probably resort to more burglaries. Thanks, lefties!

Mark Kelly is so concerned about his wife´s health that he gave up piloting that last shuttle mission so he could stay with her and continue to see to her needs.
Oh wait, he did go on that mission. My bad.
He´s the type of officer (Adm Mullens was another and Gen Dempsey is another) the US military can do without. The type that is in it for their personal glory and won´t speak up for the troops and doing the right thing. Unfortunately there are far too many of that type in the active duty force now. That´s why we need the 2nd Amendment. The military is being slowly conditioned to accept the idea that their fellow American citizens are the enemy. (I had a discussion with some active duty co-workers just this AM and they confirmed that they´ve been formally asked "if they´d ever fire on their fellow citizens").

Note the repeated and subtle lie:

FTA "the loophole that allows guns to be sold without background checks at gun shows AND by private sellers." and "and end up getting their guns from private sellers OR gun shows" (emphasis mine).

The AND in first quite implies that you can get a gun without a background check from a dealer at a gun show. That is simply not true. Similarly the OR in the second quote implies the same lie.

You cannot legally buy a gun from a dealer at a gun show or anywhere else without a background check! What they want is to outlaw private sales but they don´t have the integrity to say so.

Excuse me if I am skeptical of any plans to limit my god given right to defend myself and my family put forth by people who are lying directly to my face about thier plans.

I see. NOW the problem is mental illness!

That´s not what we heard at the time, though.

Remember? Sheriff Clarence Dupnik rushed before the cameras and blamed Republican "vitriol" and images of a target in a Sarah Palin ad for the murders. That Jared Loughner was well known to authorities because of his ongoing bizarre behavior was of little interest to the left. Loughner lived in his own world, yet Democrats said he was acting out Republican hate.

Loughner´s nonsensical ramblings on the internet were minimized. Anti Second Amendment Democrats were determined to blame the murderous acts of an untreated paranoid schizophrenic on the Republican Party. They did not give a damn about mental illness at the time. Words and images from their opponents were blamed instead. It was a cheap and unscientific theory, yet the MSM gave Democrats a podium from which to launch POLITICAL attacks.

I caught the exchange between Senator Cruz and Maryland police chief Jim Johnson during my lunch break.

Senator Cruz asked Chief Johnson to try to explain why gun-control cities like Baltimore have significantly higher gun homicide rates.

The chief, who is also the Chair of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, replied that the difference is due to differences in health care! Clearly he thinks the doctors in Chicago and Baltimore cannot do as good a job with gunshot wounds as the doctors in Texas, or that the hospitals in his own city and Chicago cannot treat gunshot wounds as effectively.

Since his statement was accepted with no response or reaction, I wondered if I heard right. I´m afraid I did hear right, but am most willing to be corrected!

I guess it´s too much to expect Wayne LaPierre to shove the fact that the local sheriff had more than enough evidence and warnings to bring in the shooter, but HE DID NOTHING. Same with the hundreds of Chicago gun murders, Dick. The democrats in that city simply DON´T prosecute criminals who use guns in crimes. It´s almost like the WP and Dick D. use the lax enforcement of thousands of gun laws to grab more power over citizens instead of doing something about criminals.

Two things jump out at me from this article.

1. They really have no idea how many guns there are in this country. They will never stop private sales, let alone generational transfers. Just ask yourself what people will do when the police arrive and ask for your grandfather´s hunting rifle. They sure won´t be turning them over quietly.

2. The media hypes crime while the rates drop and yet the wonder why more people want guns? They push fear and then expect us to give up our guns? They are losing this battle badly and they can´t understand it. 2014 should be an eye opener for some Dems.

A new poll conducted by a Democratic pollster is warning of potential impending disaster for Democrats in this year´s midterm elections because of a familiar problem — diminished turnout among voters on whom they are reliant. The Washington Post´s Greg Sargent got an early look at the poll, which was conducted by Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg of Democracy Corps for Women’s Voices Women Vote. The poll found that voters in the so-called "Rising American Electorate" — unmarried women, minorities, and younger voters — are much less likely to vote this year than in 2012. The disparity is key. BEIJING - The governor of China´s restive far western region of Xinjiang wrote on Monday that Islamist militants were trying to ban laughter at weddings and crying at funerals, as he appealed to people to stamp out the "tumor" of extremism. Xinjiang, resource-rich and strategically located on the borders of central Asia, has been beset by violence for years, blamed by the government on Islamist militants and separatists. Exiles and many rights groups say the real cause of the unrest is China´s heavy-handed policies, including curbs on Islam and the culture and language of the Muslim Uighur people who call

Call it the million-worker mystery. A large chunk of American adults are no longer in the labor force. That has left economists divided over how many of them are voluntarily not working-or even looking for work-because they wanted to retire, go to school or take care of family members, versus how many have been forced out because they couldn´t find a job. (snip) Shierholz estimates that there are currently more than 5 million missing workers who are not included in the unemployment rate because they are neither working nor looking for work, but who might be if the job market

Malaysia and Indonesia have banned the biblical epic Noah, joining other Muslim nations in vetoing the Hollywood movie because of its visual depiction of the prophet. Film censors in both countries said today that the portrayal of the ark-building prophet by Russell Crowe was against Islamic laws. Depictions of any prophet are shunned in Islam to avoid worship of a person rather than God. "The film Noah is not allowed to be screened in this country to protect the sensitivity and harmony in Malaysia´s multi-racial and multi-religious community," Film Censorship Board chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid said in a statement.

Demonstrators stormed a provincial administration building in eastern Ukraine on Sunday and raised the Russian flag atop it, demanding the release of riot police accused of killing protesters in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, in February. Police were negotiating with the demonstrators, who have called for supporters to rally around the Regional Security Administration building in Donetsk, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from the Russian border. Video of the negotiations was being streamed live online by local news outlets. The protest is the latest challenge to Ukraine´s embattled new government, which took power after a revolt that toppled pro-Russian President Viktor

A new movie, “Fight Church,” raises the unusual question: “Can you love your neighbor while kneeing him in the face?” The documentary, by directors Daniel Junge and Bryan Storkel, is about pastors who practice mixed martial arts with their parishioners. “Tough guys need Jesus, too,” one parishioner explained in the trailer for the film. The controversial topic is raising eyebrows because Jesus obviously preached nonviolence and turning the other cheek. But Pastor Paul Burress, featured in the movie, defends his unlikely evangelization techniques. “We don’t fight out of meanness,” Burress of Trinity Church in Rochester, N.Y., told ABC News. “We

There´s no two ways about it: the Dodge Dart isn´t selling. Just a year after its debut -- a debut heralded loudly throughout the automotive world -- the Dart´s sales were pretty dismal. Many of you vented about the compact model, complaining about things as varied as its so-so looks to its iffy ancestor. (Snip) Trucks and SUVs were a different story. On that front, sales were up 30 percent for the year, and March rang in a whopping 34 percent above March 2013, thanks in part to strong performances by the Ram pickup, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the

A Texas family believes they have finally captured the elusive chupacabra. The mythical creature, which legend says kills goats and other cattle, has never been proven to exist, but many people have often claimed to have hunted the animal of which there are many different descriptions. Jackie Stock said her husband, Arlen Parma, captured their animal on their Ratcliffe property Sunday. They are seeking confirmation that they´ve made the once in a lifetime discovery, TV Station KAVU-TV reports. "He called me to come and look, and I said ´Bubba that looks like a baby chupacabra,´" Stock told the station. The

Former President Bill Clinton doesn’t miss the White House most of the time, he confessed during an appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” But that’s because there’s no point in such nostalgia. “Most days I don’t miss it,” he said. “l loved doing the job, but one of the most important things… when you’re doing something you know you can’t do forever, you’ve got to organize your life so you don’t spend a minute, if possible, wishing you could do something you can’t do.” Clinton, who avoided questions about whether his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, would someday

Kathryn Riffenburg decided on a closed casket for her baby´s funeral. She didn´t want her family to see what whooping cough, her son´s first illness, had done to 9-week-old Brady Alcaide. The nearly forgotten disease, which has in recent years afflicted thousands of Americans, left Brady´s tiny body swollen and unrecognizable. So his mother dressed him in a white baptismal suit and hat and tucked him into a tiny white casket. Brady´s burial came just four weeks after his first laugh — inspired by her version of I´m a Little Teapot — and two weeks after his family learned that he had

Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican. That spells trouble for Democrats, who are already facing

When friends and family members gathered recently at the White House for a private celebration of Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday, one of the invited partygoers was a former paid FBI Mafia informant. That same man attended February’s state dinner in honor of French President Francois Hollande. He was seated with his girlfriend at a table adjacent to President Barack Obama, who is likely unaware that, according to federal agents, his guest once interacted with members of four of New York City’s five organized crime families. He even secretly taped some of those wiseguys using a briefcase that FBI technicians outfitted

LONDON - Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who worked as a model, a television presenter and a fashion writer and filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics, has died at age 25. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever."
