Kudos to Senators

Yesterday, the Senate confirmed John Kerry as Secretary of State. The vote was 94-3. Kerry’s confirmation was never in doubt. Unlike Susan Rice, Kerry did not recently exhibit willful disregard for the truth on a matter of deep public conern (the Benghazi killings), although he did slander the U.S. military four decades ago in connection with the war in Vietnam. And unlike Chuck Hagel, Kerry’s stated views on foreign policy do not fall outside the mainstream of the Democratic Party (a sad commentary on that Party) and do not diverge from the positions President Obama articulated to the public

Anyone Obama nominated for this job was going to be dreadful beyond words. If it wasn´t Kerry, it might be someone even worse, hard as that is to imagine. Probably the Republican senators who voted for Kerry didn´t vote for him but to end what would have been an increasingly painful and pointless process. We all knew Obama wasn´t going to nominate John Bolton.

All but 3 on "our side" vote with the socialists. What more proof do we need that the GOP, in its current incarnation, is finished?

The nomination of Kerry was an affront to every military member who served in Vietnam.
While I urged McCain to put a hold on Kerry,
McCain had to slobber on his buddy. A pox on both their houses.

Texas tea party sours on Stockman

HOUSTON — It’s the epic GOP primary that wasn’t. Tea party activists hoped to oust Texas Sen. John Cornyn this year in an early-March contest that could have burnished their credibility heading into the midterms. Instead, Cornyn’s best-known challenger, Rep. Steve Stockman, has gone missing on the campaign trail, dogged by unflattering stories about his past and his ethics. It’s a disappointment for many national political watchers who had pulled out the popcorn for this race. Stockman has a penchant for making inflammatory statements — one of his bumper stickers read: “If babies had guns they wouldn’t be aborted.” In December, he

Outgoing Texas Gov. Rick Perry recently spoke with MSNBC host Abby Huntsman for a lengthy interview about his politics, policy preferences, and his possible successors. When Huntsman asked if he could foresee Democratic gubernatorial candidate, state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth), residing in the governor’s mansion, Perry sidestepped the question before saying that Davis’ election, like other fanciful outcomes, was “never going to happen.” “Can you see Wendy Davis living here?” Huntsman asked Perry amid a tour of the governor’s residence. “You can see anybody living here,” Perry replied. “The issue is, are they going to win an election.” “Texas is a conservative

President Yanukovych has fled Kiev and retreated to the East, but apparently has refused to resign and is characterizing the popular uprising as a “coup.” In the meantime, protesters have taken over Kiev. This remarkable footage of Maidan (Independence Square) was shot yesterday by a drone:(Snip for video)There is talk of new elections being held as early as May, but at the moment the situation is murky. Leaders of the largely Russian-speaking areas of eastern Ukraine say they are taking control of their territories until “constitutional order” is restored. Which, from their perspective, might be never. Whether Ukraine can survive in

The protesters in Venezuela do not seek anything extraordinary: They demand to be secure in their homes and their persons, they demand an end to current shortages of staple foods and other goods in the country, and they demand the right to free speech. That these things should be considered a challenge to the Maduro regime is what is extraordinary, along with the regime’s brutal response to the protests — both speak to the character of the current Venezuelan government. If honoring such basic human decencies requires a regime change in Caracas, that is more a reflection on the current

There are so many bad features of Obamacare we were mislead on that we’re going to have come up for a euphemism for lying – maybe the administration is “truth impaired”? “Honesty-challenged?” The latest comes from just one industry reporting how many jobs were lost because of the medical device tax that was included in the bill in order to raise money to pay for its poorly designed ponzi scheme: The Advanced Medical Technology Association surveyed its members to determine the number of lost jobs since the 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices took effect in January 2013, raising about $3.8

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to announce on Tuesday the opening of two new manufacturing institutes in the Chicago and Detroit areas as part of a larger plan to use public-private partnerships to advance his agenda despite opposition from Republicans in Congress. Several federal agencies will join forces with companies and universities to run the institutes, which will be devoted to bridging the gap between applied research and product development, according to an administration official familiar with the plans. Each institute will function as a “teaching factory,” the official said, and will provide training for workers while also helping companies get the

To hear the left tell it, the right is seething with hatred, ready to erupt into violence at any moment. Pro-lifers, gun owners, and Tea Partiers—a Venn diagram that encompasses more than half the country—are all sub rosa thugs. The media assist by reflexively blaming acts of political violence on conservatives, even when no such connection exists. This week, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York offered continuing evidence of the student debt crisis. Outstanding student debt again topped $1 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2013, making it the second-largest pool of debt in the nation behind mortgages. This has tripled in just a decade, as higher-education prices increased faster than medical costs, up 500 percent since 1985. While delinquency rates for all loans have trended downward for the past three years, student loan delinquencies have surged; currently 11.5 percent of all student loans are 90 days behind or more. Every student of American religious history has heard of the event known as “the Great Disappointment.” In 1818 William Miller, a former naval captain turned lay Baptist preacher, developed a new method for calculating biblical chronology to arrive at the conclusion that the millennium would take place sometime between 1842 and 1844. Finally published in 1832, Miller’s thesis quickly drew attention. A sect began to form, spreading from Miller’s home region in Eastern New York to New England and beyond. Millerism was born. The time was drawing nigh, Miller preached, when a dreadful cataclysm would occur, to be followed by

The students were the first to protest against the regime of President Viktor Yanukovych on the Maidan, the central square in Kiev, last November. These were the Ukrainians with the most to lose, the young people who unreflectively thought of themselves as Europeans and who wished for themselves a life, and a Ukrainian homeland, that were European. Many of them were politically on the left, some of them radically so. After years of negotiation and months of promises, their government, under President Yanukovych, had at the last moment failed to sign a major trade agreement with the European Union. When the

In a watershed moment and a huge victory over environmentalists, General Electric has agreed to stop projects that are designed solely for the purpose of carbon dioxide reductions to please those who lobby for climate change concessions. The National Center for Public Policy Research, a non-partisan, free-market, independent conservative think-tank which has been fighting GE for years because of GE’s liberal bias under CEO Jeffrey Immelt, scored a huge victory after receiving the commitment from General Electric. Late in 2013, the National Center submitted a shareholder proposal as part of GE´s 2014 proxy statement and annual meeting materials. The proposal: ...request[ed] that the

Conservatives have had it up to here (hand to top of forehead) with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.). President Obama’s stimulus may have boosted the economy when it passed in 2009, but it’s now beginning to take a toll and will soon begin to leave the economy worse off than if it had never passed, according to a new report Friday by the Congressional Budget Office. Mr. Obama signed the stimulus into law five years ago this week, vowing it would help rescue the economy from its post-Wall Street collapse tailspin, and saying it would save millions of jobs. The CBO said it’s been successful at that, helping sustain between 700,000 and 3.6 million jobs at its peak

In a blow to religious colleges and universities across the country, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago denied Notre Dame´s request for an injunction to the ObamaCare birth control mandate that requires the school to provide coverage for contraception. The injunction would have given Notre Dame a temporary reprieve from the birth control mandate, as the Roman Catholic school challenges the rule in court.
