The silly season is upon us again, which is to say: Washington finds itself in yet another debate over “comprehensive immigration reform.” The core silliness could be heard in the arguments of Marco Rubio, one of four Republicans in the Senate “Gang of Eight” urging a deal that purports to ensure real immigration enforcement in exchange for legalization of status and an ultimate “path to citizenship” for millions of illegal immigrants. Earlier this afternoon, Sen. Rubio was interviewed by Rush Limbaugh. Sen. Rubio admirably insisted, “We need border security.
Comments: Mr. McCarthy gives an excellent analysis as usual. The last paragraph says it all. If they aren´t enforcing the present laws with 0bama in office they won´t enforce new ones either. It should be left to the states not Washington.
The current immigration laws are resting comfortably on the books at this time, slowly gathering dust. Rather than enforce them, the Congress will create new and improved comprehensive laws that pretty much say what the old ones say...no, exactly what the old ones say, and then not enforce those either. No one sees the pattern of this pointless exercise but it´s obvious to those of us who can.

We actually don´t need any more border security to solve the immigration issue. Its actually pretty simple.
1. Accept the fact that too many Americans refuse to take the jobs a lot of illegals do. Like farm workers. We need the labor.
2. Require a work visa for these jobs. Make the card easy to get, like a plane ticket. But only at the country of origin. Quite frankly these visas could be unlimited.
3. Spend the money to set up the database for these visas, open to all employers and law enforcement.
4. Here is the key to the whole thing. Make hiring a worker without a work permit a felony, with a fine severe enough to actually put the business under. There would be no excuse for not checking the employees status, remember #3.
5. No Benefits for work visa holder, no anchor babies either. No change in citizenship process.
The above makes not getting the visa a non issue, it just makes it easier to know whos here. The enforcement is the key. Once employers realize they can, and will, lose there business if they don´t check work status the demand for undocumented workes will dry up fast. Ones without a card will either self deport or aquire the paperwork.
All this won´t make a difference once Obama and the liberal Democrats get Republican (Stupid) Party political cover to pass their amnesty with a special streamlined path to citizenship for 11 to 20 million illegal aliens who once legalized would be able to bring about another 20 million of their foreign relatives here with a few years.
If that happens within a few years the Democrats will pick up tens of millions of new voters directly and indirectly as a result of the amnesty. With all those new voters, the Democrats will be able to flip States like Arizona, Florida and Texas in their favor much as California is today. The result of that for the Republican (Stupid) Party will be political oblivion for the long-term.
The liberal Democrats will never go along with sending immigration law enforcement to the States as they are all about central control.
Chances are with one party Democrat control across the country, and having to please their new voters, the Democrats will affectively do away with all expensive borderline controls and further liberalize the immigration laws to where just about any alien who comes here can simply stay if they can find a job.
#3, that is hogwash. Americans are not above any job if the check is right. Part of the reason half of the working class has become part of the welfare state is that employers refuse to pay decent wages to American workers when they can pay Juan and Carlos next to nothing for their labor.
BTW, Rubio does not care about border security or illegal aliens -- Rubio, the career politician, cares about HIS career and he´s willing to take Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin and the rest of us on a ride down the river to do so.
I do hope #1 read the article, which deserves a more pithy Reply.
McCarthy points out the folly of the current Republican effort (not just Rubio´s) to look like good guys to the Latino voters by "working with" Democrats like the shifty, mendacious Shumer, on this "comprehensive" reform.
This is an excellent article. Far more important than Jim Nabor´s marriage and the other trivia that seem to be attracting the lightweights this morning.
The man on the voicemail is flirty and clearly asking for a date. But it´s the name on the message that´s raising red flags. "Hi, it´s your newly favorite congressman, Bob Filner. You know, the one who fell in love with you at your last speech," he told Eldonna Fernandez. He also asked her out to dinner in the message. "I don´t want to wait ´til you come back to have dinner with you," he said. That message was left a year ago, while Filner was serving his 10th term as a U.S. congressman.
Comedian Jay Leno may be a multimillionaire, but he thanked President Obama during an appearance on his show Tuesday night for helping him get health care for his shop employees. “The guys who worked at my shop for me are all over 50. They never had health care,” Leno explained. “And I was able to get it now because you can’t be turned down. So thank you for that.” “You can’t be turned down because of a preexisting condition,” Obama said proudly as the crowd applauded. “That’s part of what we’re going to be doing.”
With all of Hollywood prepared to bow down to the First Lady of Daytime Talk for her role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Oprah is taking the opportunity to push forward her favorite narrative: America remains a deeply racist place. In an interview with The Grio, Oprah, who plays a butler’s wife in the White House in The Butler, says that Trayvon Martin, the black teenager shot by George Zimmerman, is just like 1955 murder victim Emmitt Till: “Let me just tell you, in my mind, same thing. But you can [get] stuck in that and not
A Department of Health and Human Services official told the House Ways and Means Committee that immigrants living in the United States on temporary visas are eligible for federally subsidized health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, “depending on their income.” “It was my understanding it was just going to be those that are citizens of the United States or here as permanent legal residents,” Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Jim Gerlach said at a Thursday hearing on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. “Are there folks beyond that that are eligible for tax credit –
The Obama administration is falling into a state of passivity on national security because it cannot bring itself to fully admit that the war against al-Qaeda is a war. The president’s subordinates, according to a Washington Post story today, say that they would like to bring the al-Qaeda prisoners held at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan back to the U.S. for trial. This is a terrible idea that should have been permanently squashed by congressional rejection of Attorney General Eric Holder’s plan to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in downtown New York City
Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is facing harsh criticism from some Tea Partiers after his Tuesday evening remarks denouncing those who want to fight to defund Obamacare in the upcoming continuing resolution (CR) that funds government operations. Speaking to a New Hampshire GOP fundraised, the failed 2012 GOP candidate said he opposes Obamacare but shunned efforts by conservatives to try to defund it. “I badly want ObamaCare to go away, and stripping it of funds has appeal,” Romney said at the GOP fundraiser, according to The Hill. “But we need to exercise great care about any talk
Newly uncovered video shows Lois Lerner discussing the political pressure that swirled around the IRS in 2010. Lerner says "everyone" was "screaming at" the IRS to stop the flood of money pouring into the 2010 elections through 501(c)(4) groups as a result of Citizens United. Lerner spoke to a small group at Duke´s Sanford School of Public Policy on October 19, 2010, just two weeks before the wave election that brought the Tea Party and Republicans significant gains in Congress. During her appearance Lerner was asked about the flow of money from corporations to 501(c)(4) groups.
At an AARP-Univision mayoral forum this morning, mayoral contender Anthony Weiner pulled out the age card to taunt his most vocal challengers, 69-year-old Doe Fund founder George McDonald. Weiner is 48. Before the debate, Weiner put a hand on McDonald´s back and said hello, prompting McDonald to reply: "I would appreciate if you would never touch me again." Weiner retorted: "What are you going to do about it, grandpa?" according to two sources. The feud between the two has been simmering since last week. At a debate in Laurelton, Queens on Thursday, McDonald called Weiner a "self-pleasuring freak." He said he was
Just days after Yemen´s president visited the White House, his government and the U.S. are at odds over the U.S. decision to pull most diplomatic personnel from the Arab country amidst fears of an impending terrorist attack. Yemen´s embassy in Washington said Tuesday that the move is counterproductive and advances the goals of militant groups. "While the government of Yemen appreciates foreign governments´ concern for the safety of their citizens, the evacuation of embassy staff serves the interests of the extremists and
SAN DIEGO - Mayor Bob Filner sought a personal relationship from a San Diego nurse who asked him to help an injured Marine ensnarled in Veterans Administration red tape, lawyer Gloria Allred said Tuesday. The licensed vocation nurse, Michelle Tyler, became the 11th woman to publicly accuse Filner of unwanted sexual advances. One, former mayoral Communications Director Irene McCormack Jackson, has retained Allred and filed a lawsuit against Filner and the city. The latest alleged advances took place in the mayor´s office on June 11, about one month before Filner was first accused of sexual harassment
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said there is “no question” that al-Qaeda is on the run, even though U.S. outposts remain closed due to terror threats throughout the world. “We do stand by that,” Carney said on Tuesday when asked if he stands by his previous comments that al-Qaeda has been weakened despite the recent threat, according to the pool report. “There´s no question that core al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan has been severely diminished,” he said. “It´s leadership decimated and there´s no question it´s on the run.”
Michael Hayden, the retired Air Force general who ran the National Security Agency and the CIA, revealed on Tuesday that the administration has no plan to defend against an electromagnetic pulse — and isn´t doing much to come up with one. At a conference to discuss threats to the U.S. electrical grid, especially from a cyber attack, Hayden said that there isn´t a solution to handling an EMP attack, which can come from a solar eruption or nuclear bomb. Asked about EMP defense at the conference hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center,
He thought he was a woman trapped in a man’s body — but it turns out he’s “just another boring straight guy.” ABC News editor Don Ennis strolled into the newsroom in May wearing a little black dress and an auburn wig and announced he was transgender and splitting from his wife. He wanted to be called Dawn. But now he says he suffered from a two-day bout of amnesia that has made him realize he wants to live his life again as Don. “I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing
The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking
WASHINGTON — Former Massachusetts lawmaker Barney Frank revealed that he doesn’t believe in God. During Friday’s appearance on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Frank, who championed the decriminalization of pot while serving in the House of Representatives, admitted to smoking marijuana and being an atheist. “You were in a fairly safe district. You were not one of those congress people who would have to worry about every little thing,” Maher said to Frank. “You could come on this show and sit next to a pot-smoking atheist and it wouldn’t bother you.”
Washington--As hundreds of commuters emerged from Amtrak and commuter trains at Union Station on a recent morning, an armed squad of men and women dressed in bulletproof vests made their way through the crowds. The squad was not with the Washington police department or Amtrak’s police force, but was one of the Transportation Security Administration’s Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response squads — VIPR teams for short — assigned to perform random security sweeps to prevent terrorist attacks at transportation hubs across the United States.(Snip)With little fanfare, the agency best known for airport screenings has vastly expanded its reach
A poll released Friday by Public Policy Polling found that Alaska voters would pick former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the state´s former Republican governor, Sarah Palin, if the two women were to face off in the 2016 presidential election. Clinton led with 49 percent in the hypothetical match-up, with Palin at 40 percent, a nine-point gap. As of July 3, Republicans comprised 27 percent of the state´s registered voters and Democrats made up just 14 percent. The last time Alaskans opted for the Democrats´ presidential candidate was in 1964. Clinton trails five other hypothetical GOP candidates –
In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus threatened to pull the group’s partnership with NBC and CNN for 2016 GOP presidential primary debates if the networks moved ahead with plans to air films on Hillary Clinton. “If they have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor,” Preibus said in a statement. In individual letters to CNN President Jeff Zucker and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt,
The Pentagon has placed its elite cadre of special operations teams on full alert to launch preemptive attacks against suspected al Qaeda targets across the globe, according to reports. The American special forces teams have spent the past week waiting for U.S. military and intelligence officials to confirm the whereabouts of the terror cell plotting to attack U.S. diplomatic outposts in the Mideast and North Africa. Unnamed sources told CNN on Monday that the teams were poised to carry out the preemptive strikes, but declined to comment on where the U.S. forces were located or which potential
Oprah Winfrey on Monday said the killings of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing." This transpired during an interview with The Grio that aired on NBC´s Today show. OPRAH WINFREY: It´s so easy during this time: Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin parallel to Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing. But you can, you can get stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we´ve come. Really? Martin and Till are the same thing?
In an exclusive interview for The Grio, NBCUniversal’s African-American news and opinion website, Oprah Winfrey weighed in with her unvarnished thoughts on the killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Winfrey said that, in her mind, Martin’s murder and that of Emmett Till in 1955 – whose killers were also acquitted – were the “same thing.” However, she added that it is important to keep in mind how much race relations in America have progressed over the last half-century. In a clip of the interview which aired on NBC’s Today, Oprah told The Grio’s Chris
Two Republican senators said Tuesday that they´ve personally urged the Egyptian government to release Muslim Brotherhood prisoners, after hosting meetings with top officials in Cairo as part of an Obama administration-sanctioned visit. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is in Cairo along with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-.S.C., made clear that the two U.S. lawmakers are representing the views of Congress and "do not speak for the White House." Still, they are among the most prominent U.S. representatives in the country this week, as a wave of international mediators tries to nudge the country´s military-backed government to resolve the standoff
NEW YORK — Why doesn´t Anthony Weiner just quit? It´s a question angry voters, pundits and fellow politicians have been asking almost nonstop in the nearly two weeks since the New York City mayoral candidate´s latest sexting bombshell, which has sent his poll numbers plummeting and turned his campaign into a chaotic sideshow. Weiner insists he´s staying in the race no matter what. And experts say that beyond the former congressman´s well-known ego and combativeness, his stance may just be rooted in political calculation. A leading theory: Weiner takes his hits on the campaign trail, gives the media a chance
