| IN 1951, William F. Buckley, Jr., a graduate of Yale the year before, published his first book, God & Man at Yale. In the preface, he described two ideas that he had brought with him to Yale and that governed his view of the world: "I had always been taught, and experience had fortified the teachings, that an active faith in God and a rigid adherence to Christian principles are the most powerful influences toward the good life."

Comments:
That someone associated with today´s academia (in this instance the editor of a higher education website)would reflect upon Buckley´s God & Man at Yale is somewhat reassuring in the sense that true liberal education survives, at least in some acamdemic halls. We need more of this.

Darrell K. Royal, a legendary Texas football coach who won three national championships and was known for a distinctive blend of creativity on the field and down-home folksiness off it, has died at the age of 88.The University of Texas confirmed his death in Austin. Royal, who had Alzheimer’s disease, recently had fallen at an assisted-living facility. Royal’s decline was fairly recent and ESPN’s Ivan Maisel writes that “only in recent months had he lost the sharp intellect and deft people skills that elevated him to his status as a Texas icon for decades.”

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
