Cats killing billions
of animals in the US

BBC News, by Rebecca Morelle

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 1/29/2013 1:35:45 PM

Cats are one of the top threats to US wildlife, killing billions of animals each year, a study suggests. The authors estimate they are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually. Writing in Nature Communications, the scientists said stray and feral cats were the worst offenders. However, they added that pet cats also played a role and that owners should do more to reduce their impact. The authors concluded that more animals are dying at the claws of cats in the United States than in road accidents, collisions with buildings or poisonings.

Comments:
The annual migration of woman to fit into that "Cat Woman" outfit at Halloween takes a toll on those of US approaching retirement age. [I guess it beats a heart attack during an earthquake].

Yes, my cats have helped kill millions of mice, voles, rats, pesky squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, water bugs & roaches and non-native house sparrows & starlings.

I am sure there has to be some connection to global warming turning felines into bird murderers. If it were colder, the cats would not kill.

Lets get rid of all the cats in the world and then the dogs and then the cows, pigs, goats and horses, but first lets get rid of all the morons, socialists, communists, and all enemies of freedom. That would include Oppressive Politicians, maniacal "religious" groups who wish to kill all who do not believe in their brand of paganism. And last all the animals listed above, unless popular opinion has changed.

Anyone object?

I hate to think how high the mouse and rat population in my neighborhood would be without the devoted cats on the night shift (and the owl).

My own kitty stays inside unless on a leash.

We recently had a Python round up here in South Florida, all of the captured non native snakes were destroyed. My plan involved catching them alive, placing tracking chips in them, then releasing them in areas with large feral cat populations. So far no one from the state has returned my calls.

Seriously, 50 years ago I had a cat that would lie in wait in weeds near a pond while swifts raced across the pond eating bugs. When the birds came overhead he would leap up and get one nearly every time. Lots of fun to watch.

From my point of view, it is arguable that Egypts´ problems began when they killed all the pigs. Literally sent the whole country into a tailspin when the pigs weren´t there to eat the edible garbage which led to garbage pile up and all that that brings. They will never recover. Screwing with the status quo just to be doing something is never a good idea.

Just like killing all the cats would bring back the plague because plague carrying rats began to proliferate when they didn´t have cats to keep them in check. Look it up.

#1, We moved to Durham, NC, in 1992 and licensing was already in effect. Here in the Charleston metro area there is a three-cat limit but no licensing.

Because we have indoor cats we have no insects in the house. The only mouse that made it in was held in the mouth--gently--of a 16lb cat who proudly presented it to me. I was able to release it outside.

The outdoor cat from next door takes care of the voles and moles who dig in the yard and kill plants. I understand she also keeps the flying roach population in check. While I have found a number of vole and mole bodies, I have found only one unfortunate bird--and that could have flown into a nearby window first.

If you ask me about hawks and other meat-eating birds, I can tell you I´ve seen them catch untold numbers of birds, as have many of my neighbors.

I´m of the opinion that those who don´t like cats have a lot to do with this movement. Anecdotally, I have observed that the vast majority of people who dislike cats are liberals. Not all, but a majority. Honest! I think it´s because most cats tend to be less "emotionally" needy than dogs and have an independent nature. If they voted, most cats would vote Republican.

No cats prowl our neighborhood but the songbirds have all disappeared over the past two years. (I´ve never seen a cat, no tracks in the soil or snow, don´t know anyone nearby who owns one, etc.)
The only addition to the neighborhood was a red tailed hawk that became proficient at picking off the little birds.
The hawks might also have something to do with keeping the cat population down.

I miss having my own little vole and mole eater. He also kept the rabbits away from my garden. We used to have a bunch of semi-feral cats down the street, but their home (a disabled truck) was finally removed. Saw one of them get a baby rabbit last spring from my neighbors yard. They keep down the varmits for sure.

Living near the Ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach I can testify to the fact that Norway rats are a gigantic issue.
Were it not for the feral cats these packs of big rats would intimidate people, dogs, even pit bulls!

I have indoor cats. They kill a lot of red lights, stuffed toy mice and rabbit fur balls. However, they do kill spiders. I HATE spiders and I will not discourage their behavior. One cat in particular likes to pick them up in his mouth, bite it once, spit it out on the lanoleum and then play with it to death. Works for me.

We used to live in Marin County, CA. About 15-20 yrs ago a housing development was proposed in San Rafael near the wetlands. The environmentalists went crazy because of some endangered mouse that lived in the area. So the county issued the permits with the stipulation that none of the buyers could have cats. I kid you not. We have since moved, but the last I heard they were being taking over by rodents so they were rethinking the policy. Gee, you think! You can´t make this stuff up.

A report by the Senate Intelligence Committee concludes that the CIA misled the government and the public about aspects of its brutal interrogation program for years — concealing details about the severity of its methods, overstating the significance of plots and prisoners, and taking credit for critical pieces of intelligence that detainees had in fact surrendered before they were subjected to harsh techniques. The report, built around detailed chronologies of dozens of CIA detainees, documents a long-standing pattern of unsubstantiated claims as agency officials sought permission to use — and later tried to defend — excruciating interrogation

Washington - An Idaho man who pleaded guilty to firing an assault rifle at the White House in 2011 has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. A federal judge in Washington sentenced Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez on Monday. Prosecutors had asked he spend 27 ½ years in prison for the shooting. No one was injured, but prosecutors say Ortega-Hernandez hit the executive mansion about eight times and did nearly $100,000 in damage. Ortega-Hernandez´s lawyers argued he was suffering from extreme depression and mental stress at the time of the shooting and was under the misguided belief that Armageddon was coming.

Since 2009, judges have said three times that the Iowa Department of Administrative Services doesn´t have "the statutory or regulatory authority" to issue lifetime employment bans against fired workers, but the list has steadily grown, records show. Powell only arrived in India in April 2012, and these diplomatic posts typically last three years. Obamacare, the plan purportedly created to provide health coverage for the uninsured, has enrolled just 1.7% of America´s 48.6 million uninsured. News of the disastrous numbers comes as nervous Democrats and President Barack Obama, ahead of the November midterm elections, did their best on Monday´s enrollment deadline to put a positive spin on the deeply unpopular Obamacare program. Bush was in Las Vegas this week meeting with Sheldon Adelson, and, according to the Post, "many if not most of 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s major donors are reaching out to Bush and his confidants with phone calls, e-mails and invitations to meet." One bundler even said that a "vast majority” of "Romney’s top 100 donors would back Bush." The Post also noted that in the meantime "Bush’s

I have no objections to Jeb Bush running for president. He obviously has a wide appeal as a potential candidate. (Snip) His support of Common Core, however, will also find many who are in the conservative ranks objecting, since they fear that Common Core represents educational centralism and having the government ram federal standards down their throats. What I do object to is that Bush is already being heralded as the obvious candidate, the man to whom the big money must and will flow. As the Washington Post reports: Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a

If Betsey McCaughey is correct (and I bet she is, because she has not only read the entire ObamaCare bill, she has written a book about it), Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan publicly humiliated herself during the oral arguments on the Hobby Lobby case, revealing that she either did not read the law, or failed to comprehend it if she did so. Writing in the New York Sun, McCaughey lays out what is wrong with the Justice’s declaration about Obamacare: she asserted that the statute itself mandates provision of birth control. Not one word in the Affordable Care Act guarantees health plans will cover birth control products.

Ronan Farrow’s MSNBC talk show is facing cancellation amid poor ratings, sources exclusively tell Confidenti@l.Farrow, 28 — the opinionated, blue-eyed son of actress Mia Farrow and either Woody Allen or Frank Sinatra (even Farrow’s not sure which) — has been a disaster for MSNBC. The channel took the frequent cable-show guest and handed him his own program, “Ronan Farrow Daily,” which premiered in late February. The theory was that Farrow, a Rhodes scholar who graduated college when he was 15 and went on to score degrees from Yale and Oxford, would bring his 245,000 Twitter followers with him to television

Former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey thinks President Barack Obama, a fellow Democrat, was re-elected in 2012 because he ´sucked less´ than former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. The Nebraskan straight-talker told MailOnline in an exclusive interview that Obama isn´t up to the job of bringing liberals and conservatives to the table to rescue America´s slowly choking entitlement programs. And Obama, he said Wednesday in his Manhattan office, knew full well he was lying when he promised that the Affordable Care Act would allow Americans to keep insurance plans they liked. ´He had to know he was misleading the audience,´ Kerrey said

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Climate change is already having sweeping effects on every continent and throughout the world’s oceans, scientists reported Monday, and they warned that the problem is likely to grow substantially worse unless greenhouse emissions are brought under control. The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group that periodically summarizes climate science, concluded that ice caps are melting, sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, coral reefs are dying, and fish and many other creatures are migrating toward the poles or

A National Labor Relations Board official has given the green light to Northwestern University football players to form a union. The March 26 decision by the NLRB´s Chicago regional director, Peter Sung Ohr, held that scholarship football players are "employees" for purposes of federal labor law. Ohr rejected the longstanding view of Northwestern and the National Collegiate Athletic Association that players are "student-athletes" rather than employees. While Ohr´s decision is hardly the final word on this issue, it does accelerate the legal and political battle against the NCAA and its century-old amateurism rules. Is Football Academic? Washington — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Monday finalized long-delayed rules that will require automakers to install back-up cameras in all vehicles by May 2018. The new rules set rear visibility standards that automakers will initially be able to meet only by installing cameras. At the same time, major automakers said Monday they are petitioning the Obama administration to let them end the use of side view mirrors if they install cameras that could perform the same task — a move that could improve fuel efficiency. President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security caught then released 68,000 aliens who had previously been convicted of a crime, a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies shows. The report, provided to Breitbart News ahead of its late Sunday evening release, reviews internal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) metrics to conclude that the Obama administration released 35 percent—or 68,000—convicted criminal aliens back into the U.S. general population when they could have been deported. (Snip) In response to these findings from CIS that follow up on his office’s report last week, Sessions said immigration law in America has essentially ceased to

In a meeting with the heads of the five service branches in 2010, President Obama offered the leaders a choice: Support my efforts to end the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, or resign. In a video obtained by BuzzFeed via a Freedom of Information Act request, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert Papp revealed that Obama was unwilling to compromise with service leaders over DADT during a meeting in 2010. “We were called into the Oval Office and President Obama looked all five service chiefs in the eye and said, ‘This is what I want to do.’ I cannot divulge everything

Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in
