| In the spring of 1945, Harald Quandt, a 23-year-old officer in the German Luftwaffe, was being held as a prisoner of war by Allied forces in the Libyan port city of Benghazi when he received a farewell letter from his mother, Magda Goebbels -- the wife of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. The hand-written note confirmed the devastating news he had heard weeks earlier: His mother had committed suicide with her husband on May 1, after slipping their six children cyanide capsules in Adolf Hitler’s underground bunker in Berlin. (Snip)Quandt was released from captivity in 1947.

So, was Harald in the Army or Air Force? The story starts with him being a Luftwaffe officer, but farther down it states he was a paratrooper in the Wehrmacht. Sloppy writing. It is an interesting article, though.

The Germans were not forced to surrender to bring the First World War to a close, instead they signed an Armistice (a time out) that remained in affect until the Germans decided to start the Second World War.
This article just goes to show that while all people are created equal, not all people are born equal, in that some have a pot of money awaiting them.

Interesting read. Sad family history for those survivors...money can´t buy everything. Also, I was interested to read that Joseph Goebbels had a doctorate in Drama...did not realize that. Figures.

Back in grade school in the 1950´s we learned that the surviving Nazi´s and all their kin had made it to safety in South America etc., carrying lots of cash, jewelry and art objects (most of which had belonged to European Jews) with which to finance their futures.
Never forget. However the news gets out is fine with me since all Nazi´s will rot in Hell anyway--let them count their cash while they can.

Paratroops were part of the Air Force, not the Army in WW2 German military.

Hidden? Hidden?!? The Quandt family has owned a majority state in BMW for decades, and held many other substantial industrial holdings throughout the Twentieth Century. The family is hardly hidden.
The family´s troubled - and fascinating - history was thoroughly exposed in a 2007 German documentary called "The Silence of the Quandts." The family firm used slave labor during WWII, among other awful misdeeds. With such a family history, it´s no wonder they keep to themselves. The family is nonetheless very prominent in Germany.
"Hidden Billionaires" is an awfully peculiar way to describe one of Germany´s richest and best-known families.

Los Angeles—Lil Wayne, Ron Howard, Scarlett Johansson and Kim Kardashian are all on the same page when it comes to criminal justice reform. They´re among more than 100 entertainers calling on the president to focus on changing drug laws. Rap mogul Russell Simmons helped assemble the coalition of celebrities and civil rights leaders that presented a letter to President Barack Obama on Tuesday. The group praises the president´s efforts toward drug incarceration reform but insists "the time is right" to move toward replacing jail sentences with intervention and rehabilitation for non-violent offenders. President Barack Obama is bringing 11 relatives of those killed in the shooting at Connecticut´s Sandy Hook Elementary School to Washington on Air Force One on Monday so they can personally encourage senators to back gun legislation that faces tough opposition. A nonprofit organization that works with the families, Sandy Hook Promise, said that after Obama´s speech on gun control in Hartford, he is flying with relatives of seven children and one staffer killed during December´s massacre at the school. Williamson, W.Va.- The man suspected of killing a West Virginia sheriff as he ate lunch in his car was mentally disturbed and had no particular vendetta with law enforcement, his father told The Associated Press on Thursday. Melvin Maynard said his 37-year-old son, Tennis Melvin Maynard, was exposed to harmful chemicals and injured while working at an Alabama coal mine. He most likely did not target Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum, he said. "He would have probably shot anybody, the first one he come to, you know what I´m saying?" the elder Maynard said. "I know he was off."

Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, of Delbarton, is sedated and on a ventilator but is expected to recover from gunshot wounds, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous. Two men and two women have been arrested in the case in the southern city of Maastricht. Prosecution spokeswoman Cindy Reijnders said Monday the tip came last week, but there´s no indication that any sarin was about to be used in a terror attack. One suspect was arrested Friday as he was about to start digging in a field near Maastricht. Police dug up 400-square

The Dow Jones and Standard & Poor’s 500 indexes reached record highs on Thursday, having completely erased the losses since the stock market’s last peak, in 2007. But instead of cheering, we should be very afraid. Over the last 13 years, the stock market has twice crashed and touched off a recession: American households lost $5 trillion in the 2000 dot-com bust and more than $7 trillion in the 2007 housing crash. Sooner or later — within a few years, I predict — this latest Wall Street bubble, inflated by an egregious flood of phony money from the Federal

"The net effect of all those investments will be to postpone global warming by 37 hours by the end of the century." "All those billions, for 37 hours delay?," asked Stossel. The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Life News reports: ...a former employee described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.
