Obama to Fly Over 9 Hours Just
for Speech on Immigration

Weekly Standard, by Daniel Halper

Original Article

Posted By:FlyRight, 1/29/2013 6:47:10 AM

President Barack Obama will fly over 9 hours tomorrow, round-trip from Washington, D.C. to Las Vegas, Nevada, just to deliver a speech on immigration, according to the president´s White House schedule. With Air Force One estimated to cost $182,000 per hour in flight, Obama´s trip--that is, only his travel to and from Vegas--will cost taxpayers over $1.6 million.

Wish someone would point out to the black population that for every hour the Zipster spends on AF-1, he uses up what they would likely earn in six lifetimes. Then when you add all the other expenses when he travels, it´s even worse. That this is ignored is sad. I have literally screamed for four years at least that someone should hide the keys to AF-1. What is wrong with the House that they let this continue? Don´t they pay the bills?

Add to the $1.6 million cost of AF1: Cost of the AF C-17 that carries Obama´s limo and SS SUVs; the pre-arrival SS team for hotel sweeps; bomb disposal team; fire, EMT and police units; and the 2-3 hour ban on commercial & private plane flights while in Vegas. Total cost surely approaching $5 million for 45 minute presentation.

Obama´s extravagance with taxpayer money is in stark contrast to yesterday´s story about 5 US soldiers who suffered quadruple amputations in Iraq and Afghanistan. These grievously wounded young men depend upon private charities for everything from wheel chair ramps to donated used cars to supplement VA care. In time, their sacrifices will fade, and they will be on their own. A $5 million trust fund for care would them would be far better than a Vegas trip.

O, the horror! All the CO2 he´s putting into the air! How many polar bears will die? How many species will go extinct? How many more Solyndra´s will have to be funded, because of this horrible jet putting horrible carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? He should ride a horse on these excursions, like Al Gore and Leo DeCaprio and Diane Feinstein do.

The Wall Street Journal has a big frontpage story today on the disability epidemic. It’s a good addendum to my column from last week. The unexpectedly large number of American workers who piled into the Social Security Administration’s disability program during the recession and its aftermath threatens to cost the economy tens of billions a year in lost wages and diminished tax revenues. Signs of the problem surfaced Friday, in a dismal jobs report that showed U.S. labor force participation rates falling last month to the lowest levels since 1979,

By any observable metric, zombies are totally hot right now. Look at movies like "Warm Bodies" and the coming "World War Z," the ratings for AMC´s hit series "The Walking Dead" (12.9 million viewers for its recent season finale) and $2.5 billion in annual sales for zombie videogames. Over the past decade, between a third and a half of all zombie movies ever made have been released. A glance at Google GOOG -1.51%Trends reveals that in the past few years, interest in flesh-eating ghouls has far outstripped popular enthusiasm for vampires, wizards and hobbits.

J. David Kuo, an evangelical Christian conservative and former top official of President George W. Bush’s faith-based initiative who drew wide attention when he publicly accused the administration of failing to live up to the values it espoused, died April 5 in Charlotte. He was 44.He was diagnosed a decade ago with brain cancer, his wife, Kimberly, said. The arc of Mr. Kuo’s life and career had taken him from liberal to conservative, from hard-edged Republican activism in the 1990s to disillusionment with the idea that politics could serve as an extension of his faith.

This country is an embarrassment. We can’t do anything right, least of all corruption. Look, when Venezuela’s populist demagogue Hugo Chavez died, word was he’d somehow accumulated an estate worth $2 billion. In the old days when the PRI party ruled Mexico uninterruptedly, every president got a single six-year term — and promptly retired at its close as a billionaire. And that was when a billion was real money.

Like most of you, I yearn for shorter winters, more shirt-sleeve weather, less lashing from frigid winds. As a confirmed New Yorker, I’m not willing to do what millions have done: move to the sunbelt. I want warmer weather here in the Big City. But I’ve grown old waiting for the promised global warming. I was 35 when predictions of a looming ice age were supplanted by warmmongering. Now I’m 68, and there’s still no sign of warmer weather. It’s enough to make one doubt the “settled science” of the government-funded doom-sayers.

In a measure of solidarity with those affected by the budget-slashing government sequestration, President Obama is giving up 5 percent of his salary for rest of the year, which is almost as admirable and sensible as a mansion-owner shutting off his marble fountains during a drought. This is not to imply that the president shouldn´t demonstrate some unity with those who´ve been furloughed or lost work because of the blind slashing the sequestration prompted. It´s all courtesy of the Obama image machine, serving up a stream of words, images and videos that invariably cast the president as commanding, compassionate and on the ball. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
