Former Guatemalan dictator to

Mexico City - Former Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt will stand trial on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, a Guatemalan judge ruled Monday, in incidents that took place during the height of the Central American nation´s brutal civil war in the early 1980s. (Snip) Some conservative Guatemalans continue to believe that Rios Montt is a national hero whose “hard hand” anti-crime strategies and scorched-earth tactics against Marxist rebels and those suspected of supporting them saved the country from ruin. But liberal groups and human rights advocates have long hoped

Comments:
So, for those who hope to change the rule of a Marxist must be prepared to stand trial someday if you were a little "excessive" in who you targeted. After all, now the Guatemalan military can´t get "direct" military aid from US [see Fast & Furious].

did you know that Guatemala used to be named Guatemala de l´Asuncion, and that Rios Montt changed it to Nueva Guatemala? Then after he was got rid of the new leadership re-named Guatemala again, so now it is Nueva Guatemala de l´Asuncion. This makes me want to visit Guatemala and kiss everybody.

Take note... Marxists get revenge when in power. I wouldn´t be surprised if Holder files charges against Bush & Cheney.

How come Marxists never seem to be held accountable nor go to trial for human rights abuses when they murder tens of thousands (or even millions) of people while they are in power?? It only seems that they go after the anti-marxists.

The Obama movement has re legitimized marxism,so the sins of the past are up for review and punishment. This is a signal to anti-marxists in this country to sit down and shut up.

I lived in Guatemala back when he took power (and lost it). Guess whose apartment building (a converted mansion, so the building wasn´t all that big....) he spent the night in when he was overthrown? Good times...

Beautiful country, good food, but so many problems.

Detroit - The U.S. government arrested a 22-year old Dearborn Heights man on terrorism charges as he was attempting to fly to Lebanon. Mohammad Hassan Hamdan was taken into custody Sunday night at Metro Airport before boarding a flight that would taken him to Beirut, Lebanon through Paris, France. The round-trip ticket called for a return to Detroit on May 3 but the government said information obtained during its investigation placed some doubt on his intent to return to the U.S. The criminal complaint alleges Hamdan was planning to fight for Hizballah in the current conflict in Syria. Haifa, Israel - Top Israeli defense officials have hurriedly put in place a confidential list of secret security measures in light of the baffling disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jumbo jet that experts fear could become a weapon of mass destruction if in the wrong hands. (Snip) “My guess is based upon the stolen passports, and I believe Iran was involved [in the disappearance of the plane],” Issac Yeffet, formerly a global security expert for Israel’s national airline El Al told today’s Times of Israel. “They hijacked the aircraft and they landed it in a place that nobody can see or find it.”

Singer Courtney Love has made a serious breakthrough in the worldwide hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 — at least, according to her. Love yesterday took to her official Facebook and Twitter channels to post a photo showing what she believes to be the plane’s wreckage. The area of ocean Love shows, in the form of a screengrab from the satellite imaging site Tomnod, is near to the Malaysian island of Pulau Perak. Albany - In a surprise vote, the New York State Senate on Monday rejected legislation that would have granted state tuition aid to undocumented immigrants, dealing a blow to immigrants’ advocates who had made it their top priority in the capital. The Senate, controlled by Republicans and a small group of Democrats, failed to pass the measure despite a vote of 30 in favor and 29 opposed. It required 32 votes in favor to pass. Immigrants’ advocates have been leaning on the Senate for months. But Republicans had shown no interest in considering the legislation, and the decision to hold a vote on Monday came abruptly,

London - Britain on Monday said it was still treating Crimea as part of the Ukraine despite Sunday’s referendum which delivered a 96 per cent vote in favour of Russian rule on the peninsula. In a statement issued after European Union foreign ministers met in Brussels, British Foreign Secretary William Hague stressed that “for the UK and her allies the Crimea remains part of Ukraine.” “We are witnessing a clear attempt to pave the way for the annexation of part of the sovereign territory of an independent European state, through military force and an illegal and illegitimate referendum,” he added.

A report issued by the Justice Department’s inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, underscores the danger of extolling short-term results when it comes to prosecuting white-collar crimes. The report highlights how generating headlines seemed to take precedence over accurate figures in the government’s fight against mortgage fraud. In October 2012, less than a month before the presidential election, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. called a news conference to trumpet the Justice Department’s success in combating foreclosure fraud through a program called the Distressed Homeowner Initiative.

Washington - The Obama administration more often than ever censored government files or outright denied access to them last year under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, according to a new analysis of federal data by The Associated Press. The administration cited more legal exceptions it said justified withholding materials and refused a record number of times to turn over files quickly that might be especially newsworthy. Most agencies also took longer to answer records requests, the analysis found. The government´s own figures from 99 federal agencies covering six years show that half way through its second term,

President Obama on Monday slapped Russia with the kinds of economic sanctions not seen since the Cold War, but the administration’s supposed hard line was met with mockery and a “collective shrug” in Moscow, Kiev and Washington. One day after Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, the White House and its partners in the European Union responded by targeting high-ranking officials in Moscow along with pro-Russian figures responsible for the unrest in Ukraine. The move adds even more tension to a dramatic standoff between Russia and the West, but early signs suggest the latest round of

Hillary Clinton may well be the most "known" politician in the world. She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have been on the national stage for more than two decades -- traveling from Arkansas to the White House to the Senate to the 2008 campaign trail and finally to the State Department. During that time, every look and utterance from Hillary has been examined, then examined again, then analyzed, then overanalyzed. That´s why this series of photos -- shot by LIFE magazine in 1969 as part of a feature on outstanding college students -- is so fascinating. It captures
