State stops sale of cheap milk

| For Lafayette stockbroker Kenneth Daigle, buying a gallon of milk is no longer the bargain it used to be on Tuesdays at Fresh Market. The upscale supermarket chain yanked milk from its $2.99 once-a-week promotion after a state auditor objected to the low price. A gallon of whole milk was priced at $5.69 Thursday at the Fresh Market in Perkins Rowe. State Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain said Fresh Market violated state regulations by selling milk below cost as part of a promotion.

Sounds like a bigger problem than that--where does the gov´t get off telling a merchant what he can sell his wares for?

I can remember growing up on the farm when I was a kid. We traded eggs for milk with our neighbor. Soon, we will be back to bartering for goods, until the Gov tries to outlaw it of course...

Found this fascinating since my state, PA, has exactly the opposite. I can walk into any convenience store and get milk for the same price as at the supermarket. (On the other hand, supermarkets can sell milk for less than the capped price and recently have done so. Maybe the law has been changed and I am ignorant of that.) It has something to do with the protection of our big dairy industry but not logical to me unless neighboring states would charge more for milk that they exported to PA than the cap if allowed.

I certainly hope that Governor Jindal is aware of this and takes action. He tends to be a very consistant conservative, and this afront to free market capatism sounds far more like something coming from the Øvomit administration than from the state level of government...

Pennsylvania´s Milk Marketing Board regulates the sale of milk here in the state.
A few years ago they went after Pa. milk producers who put ´not made from cows treated with BHT hormone´ on labels.
The MMB [at the behest of BHT using dairies] said that this would give those putting this disclaimer on their packaging an UNFAIR advantage over milk producers who DID used BHT hormone .......... even though the state and FDA said that consumption of milk from BHT cows was ´safe´ to drink.
As far as I know NONE of the milk now sold a local markets comes from BHT using dairies. ............... no one here would but it.

It cost $3 just to walk near a Fresh Market. They are by far the most expensive store I´ve ever been to. I go only for the unusual items they have. But the local Kroger is starting to put a challenge in that category without the premium pricing.

$5.69 for a gallon of milk???? What is it packed in, gold cartons??? GEEZ! We can still get a gallon of milk here for under $4--which I still think is ridiculously high. Why is the price of milk so high anyway? Is it all the government intervention? No opportunity for competition? Sickening...

Come to Canada to see the awesome things a Milk Marketing Board can do for free trade (not). There´s a good reason for the brisk cross-border trade in milk (and cheese) being purchased in the USA by Canadians who live close enough to the border to do it.

It doesn´t matter. There are enough people with milk allergies or lactose intolerance that the nanny state will eventually get around to banning it altogether. A group of leftie doctors has already asked the USDA to ban milk from schools -- not just full-fat or chocolate milk, but all milk.

This problem existed in Louisiana a few decades ago. A popular local supermarket owner, John Schwegmann, successfully fought against milk price-fixing. He had prior experience--in 1948 he fought against price-fixing on liquor, and won.
Back to milk--it took John eight years but he won the case against milk price-fixing in the early 1970s.
It seems that those who don´t believe in free competition, as John did, have gone back to their old unfair trade practices.
(I came to know then-Senator Schwegmann through work in animal welfare. He was a kind man as well as a great businessman. I showed him around a notorious parish dog pound--he had no idea of its deplorable condition, was overcome and tears rolled down his cheeks. Thereafter he helped us pressure the parish to build a new facility with humane staff. John owned several well-loved dogs found abandoned in his supermarket parking lots.)

Ahmadinejad was speaking at a ceremony to mark Nuclear Technology Day, as well as launch two uranium mines and a yellow cake production plant in the city of Yazd. The controversial president once again made clear that Iran has every right to pursue its nuclear programme, even though the western powers believe it is a covert mission to produce atomic weapons. In a veiled remark to the US, Ahmadinejad said Iran has already become a "nuclear country"

The issue arises after the liberal outlet Mother Jones published "A recording of a private meeting between the Senate GOP leader and campaign aides." In a statement to the press, McConnell´s campaign manager, Jesse Benton, says the feds are getting involved. "Senator McConnell’s campaign is working with the FBI and has notified the local U.S. Attorney in Louisville, per FBI request, about these recordings," says Benton.

I operate by some principals I call cowboy logic. To give you a smattering of the philosophy of cowboy logic in a thumbnail sketch, I usually list these three examples: 1) 2 + 2 is always 4 2) Water never runs uphill 3) If there´s smoke, there´s a fire somewhere. (snip) No matter how much the sycophants in the media and the partial pundits tell us that the debt doesn´t matter and that the economy is making a recovery, 2 + 2 is still 4, and the numbers just don´t add up.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors.
