| He worked just one year as a full-time teacher in New York. But he has collected nearly $1 million for 13 years for doing almost nothing. Aryeh Eller, 46, a former music teacher at Hillcrest HS in Queens, is the longest-sitting “rubber room” teacher in the city. He was yanked from the classroom in 1999 and confessed to repeated sexual harassment of female students, according to a 2000 investigative report. But a hearing officer who decides whether tenured teachers can be fired dismissed the case, ruling that Eller wasn’t told his rights.

That´s the way they like to spend taxpayer money in New York. Otherwise, they would change things. The taxpayers allow politicians and unions to divvy up the spoils of government.

This is just plain peculiar. An employee does not have the right to remain silent in an investigation or hearing on a collective bargaining agreement for just cause discipline. In fact, if the employee refuses to testify, that can be held against him. It is no different than a civil trial, where there is no right to remain silent.
This is just plain crazy.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the Tea Party favorite and emerging 2016 GOP presidential star, on Wednesday showed he is looking to broaden his and the Republican Party´s base far beyond white males to include African-American youths. In a speech to Howard University Wednesday morning, Paul reached out to blacks, arguing that the Democrats and President Obama has failed African Americans, but admitting that the GOP has a long way to go before blacks see Republicans as their guide to success. "Some have said that I´m either brave or crazy to be here today.

President Obama´s two-month-late federal budget proposal is drawing substantial criticism from Republicans in Congress and elsewhere, but Chris Edwards, the Cato Institute´s budget-numbers master, offers a timely reminder - President George W. Bush was a bigger spender. Edwards points to the fact that the average annual spending increase under Bush was 7 percent, compared to 4 percent under Obama, then makes the essential point: "Partisan Republicans are probably tired of fiscal conservatives and libertarians complaining about Bush´s big spending, especially when Obama has done so much damage to limited government. But Republicans are fooling themselves if they think

Jim Watters was among the fewest of the few when he testified in Congress that poisoned water at Camp Lejeune was killing Marines, and that they were victims of "friendly fire" by federal agencies that refused to admit it. After years of denials, the Department of Veterans Affairs finally acknowledged the toxic blend of chemicals in the drinking water at the North Carolina base "as likely as not" caused his kidney cancer, and granted him disability benefits. He was one of the lucky ones, he said, because he worked as an assistant dean at the Texas Tech University

President Obama on Wednesday unveiled his $3.77 trillion budget for next fiscal year, calling for higher taxes in exchange for cost reductions in Social Security and Medicare, setting the stage for another fight with Congress over the nation’s fiscal priorities. Within the president’s budget — which would produce a $744 billion deficit in 2014 — are roughly $800 billion in new taxes, including a higher levy on tobacco products. Obama’s proposal would raise taxes on cigarettes by 94 cents per pack, up to $1.95. From the Rose Garden on Wednesday, the president said such taxes were nonnegotiable

The head of the nation´s largest gun lobbying group said Tuesday that the organization plans to sue Maryland to prevent Gov. Martin O´Malley´s sweeping new restrictions on so-called assault weapons from taking effect. The General Assembly passed the ban last week and is waiting for O´Malley to sign it, but National Rifle Association President David Keene said the NRA is already preparing for a court fight. In addition to an assault weapon ban, Maryland lawmakers voted to require gun buyers to be fingerprinted and to undergo gun-handling training and to limit the size of ammunition magazines.

Washington — President Barack Obama is sending Congress a $3.8 trillion spending blueprint that seeks to achieve an elusive "grand bargain" to tame runaway deficits by raising taxes further on the wealthy and trimming popular benefit programs such as Social Security. The president´s proposal being unveiled Wednesday includes an additional $1.8 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade, bringing total deficit savings to $4.3 trillion, based on the administration´s calculations. It projects that the deficit for the 2014 budget year, which begins Oct. 1, would fall to $744 billion.

Ahmadinejad was speaking at a ceremony to mark Nuclear Technology Day, as well as launch two uranium mines and a yellow cake production plant in the city of Yazd. The controversial president once again made clear that Iran has every right to pursue its nuclear programme, even though the western powers believe it is a covert mission to produce atomic weapons. In a veiled remark to the US, Ahmadinejad said Iran has already become a "nuclear country"

A prototype shipboard laser will be deployed on a converted amphibious transport and docking ship in the Persian Gulf, where Iranian fast-attack boats have harassed American warships and where the government in Tehran is building remotely piloted aircraft carrying surveillance pods and, someday potentially, rockets. The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Life News reports: ...a former employee described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered. Margaret Thatcher had more impact on the world than any woman ruler since Catherine the Great of Russia. Not only did she turn around—decisively—the British economy in the 1980s, she also saw her methods copied in more than 50 countries. "Thatcherism" was the most popular and successful way of running a country in the last quarter of the 20th century and into the 21st. Her origins were humble. Born Oct. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of a grocer in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham. Alfred Roberts was no ordinary shopkeeper.

Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded Monday that implementing the Affordable Care Act has been more complicated and frustrating than the Obama administration expected, largely due to Republicans who have opposed the law´s state-based exchanges and Medicaid expansion. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
