Springfield, IL - Jake McNiece was gone before we even knew he was here. His name might not resonate with you. It didn’t with me until I heard that he had died. After that, it didn’t take long to learn Jake’s story. It’s worth learning. In a nutshell, he was the real-life model for Lee Marvin’s character in the 1967 movie “The Dirty Dozen.” Jake, 93, died in Chatham on Monday.(Snip) The actual group of WWII soldiers the movie is based on was called The Filthy Thirteen. They were rounders — not murderers and psychopaths, as Hollywood portrayed them, but brawlers and no respecters of authority.

If I´m not mistaken, Lee Marvin was a Major in the film. The article says McNiece never made Pfc (altho there is a pic of him in a shirt with 3 stripes, so....... wassup wid all dat??

It probably sounded better to the studio if Lee Marvin was a major (or a Col.) I had no idea that this movie was based on a real group of guys. But after finding out you are being portrayed in a movie as a murderer, I doubt the real guys would want to be associated with that stigma.

Gov. Pat Quinn Tuesday terminated the state’s contract covering members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union. Calling the move unprecedented in the 40-year history of state employee labor contracts, AFSCME issued a statement saying the termination has “little immediate practical effect, as all existing terms and conditions of employment remain in place under state law.”

Springfield’s budget director says the city is out of options to be reimbursed for expenses associated with hosting then-Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign stop in the fall of 2008. “Short of suing the campaign, which isn’t really going to do anything — it would drag on forever — there’s really nothing we can do,” said Bill McCarty. “We’ve tried.” Obama introduced his running mate, Joe Biden, at the Old State Capitol in August 2008. RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.

SANFORD - Trayvon Martin´s parents have settled a wrongful death claim for an amount believed to be more than $1 million against the homeowners association of the Sanford subdivision where their teenage son was killed.
