SANTA MARIA, Brazil- A fire at a Brazilian nightclub early Sunday killed at least 137 people and left scores of others injured, police said. The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. at Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, CNN reported. There were 300 to 400 people in the club when the fire erupted and only one exit door, O Globo, Rio de Janeiro, reported. "It was a small door for a lot of people" Luana Santos Silva, who was at the nightclub, told O Globo. Col. That´s horrifying. Haven´t they ever heard of the Kentucky nightclub fire? All the mistakes that caused that tragedy should be known worldwide.

Oh how sad. We have had a lot of them in the states, too, I remember one big one in the Bronx a few years ago and there was the Cocoanut Grove. If you want mass death, don´t look to spray shooters, look to clubland fires. These casualty counts are as high as those of jet liner or ferry crashes.

Really horrible. Totally avoidable. Cause of death? Bureaucratic incompetence and corruption.

There´s no mention of the club being "illegal," outside the notice of authorities, so we have to conclude that things like aisleways, doors, fire suppression and alarms, were within the regulations. Or within the scope of "regulations-plus-bribes."

My larger point is this -- just as I have posted many times, one of the world´s great killers is the refusal of authorities around the world to adopt and fairly enforce reasonable, appropriate, minimal building codes [in the large sense, scope to include things like I mention above re this tragedy], and to move up from those basics, following a pre-established schedule.

I know, that requires a minimum level of consistent honesty and even-handedness generally unknown around the world. But that is an argument, a strong argument, for doing so, not for throwing up our hands.

The people in these countries need to step in and step up. Hard, perhaps, but more than worth it.

Oh -- and thanks to the Leftists, the Democrats, the media, the academics, the "advocates," and the corrupt here in the US, so do we, before things get even worse. So do we.

WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told her party at a caucus meeting that the midterm elections have to be won day by day over the next 10 months despite this week’s loss of two House Democrats. But despite the fact that she’ll hardly miss a departing Blue Dog Democrat who has voted against the president’s key agenda items, she maintained that the right would send moderates into her party’s “bipartisan” arms come November. “We have to use every day, every week; one good day, one good week, one good month, one good quarter on top of another,

The Senate left town Thursday without a deal for renewing federal employment benefits after bipartisan talks over an offset reached an acrimonious impasse. Prospects for forging an agreement that could pass the upper chamber with bipartisan support seesawed throughout the day, with Democratic leaders expressing optimism that a deal was close. But hopes for a breakthrough were dashed when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) offered up a mostly Democratic-driven plan that would cover the $18 billion cost of extending the federal benefits through November. Senate Republicans were further incensed when Reid told them

TRENTON, N.J. – Six New Jersey residents have filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. Chris Christie, the state of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and others over traffic jams in September. The suit filed in federal court Thursday appears to be the first civil claim over traffic that appear to have been caused as political punishment for the Fort Lee mayor. The plaintiffs want it certified as a class action. Lawyer Rosemarie Arnold says she filed it after learning this week that lane closures on an approach to the George Washington Bridge were "deliberate

The same network evening news shows that ignored vindictiveness by the Obama administration during October´s government shutdown were up in arms Wednesday over New Jersey Governor Chris Christie´s "bridgegate" and the possible tarring it could give his image. NewsBusters already counted 17 times more network coverage of Christie´s controversy than of Obama´s IRS scandal in the past six months. That same double standard was evident in the treatment given the Christie administration versus the non-coverage of any Obama administration wrongdoing during the shutdown.

They’re perfectly shaped with rounded edges; they don’t have the same thick core; and, even peeled, they’re bright orange. And a quick Google search of baby carrots turns up some frightening information on how they’re made and whether they’re really “soaked in chlorine.” What’s up with that?
