| A day after watching a 6-year-old neighborhood boy fly through the air when he was fatally struck by a teenage driver suspected of being intoxicated, Jane Withers refused to leave the spot where the boy´s mother tried in vain to save him. Overcome by the magnitude of the tragedy that left Brandon Abrams´ family grieving and a 17-year-old jailed on intoxication manslaughter charges, Withers helped set up a makeshift memorial soon after the incident at 6 p.m. Thursday in her Northwest Side neighborhood.

Comments: Sadly, the dead child was ON THE SIDEWALK waiting for the ice cream truck to arrive. The murderer ... excuse me, the accused murder ... is a 17 year old DRUNK driver (drinking age is 21), without a license, who "lost control" of his truck when he dropped his cell phone. Oh yeah, the immigration folks have placed a hold on the guy, since his "status" as what Dear Leader(US) Obama and his San Antonio stooge, Mayor Castro would call either an "undocumented alien" or a "future Democrat voter" is in question.

While I truly feel sorry whenever something tragic happens to a child ( I´m a grandfather), I sometimes have to wonder if there is a group of entrepenuers that specialize in stuffed animals, candles and flower arrangements to immediately pile on the sidewalks.

The idea of technology was to make life better. It´s gone over the hump by now and every technological innovation will just make life more difficult. But this has not yet been recognized, so we´ll just keep introducing new, clever, glittery gizmos and life will just keep getting more and more meaningless.

I, too, wonder about all the "stuff" piled at these scenes. I do not mean to criticize but I think it is kind of creepy. I think they just don´t know what else to do. I feel the same way when I go to a cemetery and see toys and trinkets piled around a headstone. Condolences to the family. I am very sorry for your loss.

-That stuff has to stop. The cellphone is ridiculous, the drinking,- he said, in reference to the intoxication manslaughter charges. He questioned why a 17-year-old would be -drinking at 5 o´clock in the afternoon.-
It´s what they do. I grew up in SA among mostly Mexican-American kids. They didn´t act like this. It is the illegals who have a disfunctional culture of drunkenness. Until we put an end to the invasion the DUIs, crime and more deaths will escalate.

Failure to enforce existing immigration law costs another innocent U.S. life. I hope there is a God so that this little boy can be in paradise and the drunk Mexican can pay for his crimes in the afterlife, because you know some bleeding heart liberal lawyer will get him off nearly scott free.

As soon as I read the first sentence, I knew that the driver was (1) illegal and (2) likely drunk.
Illegals - doing the drunk driving Americans won´t do.

Amen #1 and #8. BUT I have an idea. Let´s have that 17 year old PUNK look at pictures of injured and dead (that´s DECEASED if you´re a cop) kids. Also let´s have the PUNK take classes in good driving while sober. Yeah that should solve the problem. Personally I think any punk teenager who drives drunk should be beat to death.

When I was a kid one of my 12 year old cousins was hit by a drunk driver and killed. I don´t recall any candlelit vigils or piling of toys and flowers. The neighbors brought food to his family and showed up at the funeral. They were all very good to my aunt for months afterward. I suppose tossing a stuffed critter into the pile means there has to be no personal contact and you can go about your business. Mrs. Cow

During this year´s Conservative Political Action Conference, the American Conservative Union paraded its star lineup of African Americans who share their political philosophy. They were featured as a “stunning array of speakers from the African American community.” But in reality, they are not known by black America, with the exception of Dr. Benjamin Carson and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The problem that conservatives face when featuring these people is that even though they are black, they are not in tune with African Americans. They do not share the struggles, frustrations and everyday problems of the community they claim to represent.

When Democrats in the Texas House met in late January to elect Rep. Yvonne Davis of Dallas as their leader by the slimmest of margins, she promised to listen to their voices and not to unelected outsiders, specifically, Houston Democratic benefactor Steve Mostyn. Almost immediately, the phone of the successful plaintiff´s lawyer lit up with text messages from lawmakers lamenting the remarks of the woman they had just elected as their leader. After all, Mostyn and his wife, Amber, have infused $25 million into Democratic efforts in the past two election cycles. Surely, some respect was owed.

Seven months after hosting a private $35,800-a-plate fundraiser for President Barack Obama at his home in The Dominion, nationally recognized plaintiff´s lawyer and Democratic Party stalwart Mikal C. Watts finds himself under federal investigation over the legitimacy of his client list in a case stemming from the 2010 BP oil spill. Earlier this month, Secret Service agents, who not only protect the president but investigate cases of fraud, counterfeiting and identity theft, served search warrants at Watts´ two law offices on the Northwest Side, the San Antonio Express-News has confirmed with federal officials and Watts´ attorney.

Another Maverick County commissioner was indicted on allegations of corruption Thursday, making it three of the five commissioners facing federal charges. With the arrest of Precinct 4 Commissioner César Flores, 46, only Precinct 3 Commissioner Jose Luis Rosales and County Judge David Saucedo are not under indictment. Flores was released on $40,000 bail, and Precinct 1 Commissioner Eliaz Maldonado, who´s also facing corruption charges, is out on bail as well, so the court can make a quorum.

AUSTIN — At a Houston news conference early this month, Dr. Donna Campbell stood alongside Gov. Rick Perry, looking the part of a newly elected senator: sharp-eyed, coiffed, wearing a bright pearl necklace. For many, this was a first glimpse at the New Braunfels Republican, who doesn´t yet have an office in the Capitol but now represents state Senate District 25, which includes northern Bexar County.

Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It’s a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Obama’s health care overhaul. The charge, buried in a recent regulation, works out to tens of millions of dollars for the largest companies, employers say. Most of that is likely to be passed on to workers. Employee benefits lawyer Chantel Sheaks calls it a “sleeper issue” with significant financial consequences, particularly for large employers

Two Rivers — The frigid waves slam against the fragile deck and hull of an aging wooden schooner. Each swell tosses the ship from side to side, ever closer to capsizing. The men on deck fear for their lives, but relentless Lake Michigan is deaf to their cries of horror. Knowing death is imminent, Capt. Herman Schuenemann of the Rouse Simmons writes a note that would become his last known words. It is a plea to God to spare his and his crew’s lives. For 13 years, Schuenemann had delivered his cargo of Christmas trees to families in Chicago from Thompson, Mich. He was so beloved by the people of

The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent

Clinton praised her own mother for helping empower her to success and marveled at the opportunities that her own daughter Chelsea has pursued. But Clinton warned that there is still so much to do to promote women´s rights in America. Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

SANFORD - Trayvon Martin´s parents have settled a wrongful death claim for an amount believed to be more than $1 million against the homeowners association of the Sanford subdivision where their teenage son was killed. Their attorney, Benjamin Crump, filed that paperwork at the Seminole County Courthouse, a portion of which was made public today. In the five pages of the settlement that were available for public review, the settlement amount had been marked out. Lower in the agreement, the parties specified that they would keep that amount confidential. When asked during an earlier interview whether the amount was
