A day after watching a 6-year-old neighborhood boy fly through the air when he was fatally struck by a teenage driver suspected of being intoxicated, Jane Withers refused to leave the spot where the boy´s mother tried in vain to save him. Overcome by the magnitude of the tragedy that left Brandon Abrams´ family grieving and a 17-year-old jailed on intoxication manslaughter charges, Withers helped set up a makeshift memorial soon after the incident at 6 p.m. Thursday in her Northwest Side neighborhood.
Comments: Sadly, the dead child was ON THE SIDEWALK waiting for the ice cream truck to arrive. The murderer ... excuse me, the accused murder ... is a 17 year old DRUNK driver (drinking age is 21), without a license, who "lost control" of his truck when he dropped his cell phone. Oh yeah, the immigration folks have placed a hold on the guy, since his "status" as what Dear Leader(US) Obama and his San Antonio stooge, Mayor Castro would call either an "undocumented alien" or a "future Democrat voter" is in question.
While I truly feel sorry whenever something tragic happens to a child ( I´m a grandfather), I sometimes have to wonder if there is a group of entrepenuers that specialize in stuffed animals, candles and flower arrangements to immediately pile on the sidewalks.
The idea of technology was to make life better. It´s gone over the hump by now and every technological innovation will just make life more difficult. But this has not yet been recognized, so we´ll just keep introducing new, clever, glittery gizmos and life will just keep getting more and more meaningless.
I, too, wonder about all the "stuff" piled at these scenes. I do not mean to criticize but I think it is kind of creepy. I think they just don´t know what else to do. I feel the same way when I go to a cemetery and see toys and trinkets piled around a headstone. Condolences to the family. I am very sorry for your loss.
-That stuff has to stop. The cellphone is ridiculous, the drinking,- he said, in reference to the intoxication manslaughter charges. He questioned why a 17-year-old would be -drinking at 5 o´clock in the afternoon.-
It´s what they do. I grew up in SA among mostly Mexican-American kids. They didn´t act like this. It is the illegals who have a disfunctional culture of drunkenness. Until we put an end to the invasion the DUIs, crime and more deaths will escalate.
Failure to enforce existing immigration law costs another innocent U.S. life. I hope there is a God so that this little boy can be in paradise and the drunk Mexican can pay for his crimes in the afterlife, because you know some bleeding heart liberal lawyer will get him off nearly scott free.
We are in the age of narcissistic emotional displays. I weep, sob, wail, leave ribbons, cuddly toys, crosses therefore I´m better than you because I show I care. Disease of sentimental and emotional diarrhea.
Amen #1 and #8. BUT I have an idea. Let´s have that 17 year old PUNK look at pictures of injured and dead (that´s DECEASED if you´re a cop) kids. Also let´s have the PUNK take classes in good driving while sober. Yeah that should solve the problem. Personally I think any punk teenager who drives drunk should be beat to death.
When I was a kid one of my 12 year old cousins was hit by a drunk driver and killed. I don´t recall any candlelit vigils or piling of toys and flowers. The neighbors brought food to his family and showed up at the funeral. They were all very good to my aunt for months afterward. I suppose tossing a stuffed critter into the pile means there has to be no personal contact and you can go about your business. Mrs. Cow
It started with a political donation and a request for a small favor in return. That exchange gradually would lead James Phil “J.P.” Flores into a relationship with narcotics traffickers, the former Hidalgo County sheriff´s deputy said as he testified last week in a drug conspiracy trial. A local smuggler with deep pockets knew Flores faced pressure to raise money for his boss´ campaigns. He offered the deputy cash.
The attorney for San Diego´s embattled mayor says the city failed to provide Bob Filner state-required sexual harassment training and therefore should pay to defend him against a lawsuit by his former communications director, who alleges he asked her to work without wearing panties. Filner´s lawyer Harvey Berger made the argument in a letter to City Attorney Jan Goldsmith one day before the City Council voted unanimously to deny Filner funds for his legal defense. Local media published parts of the letter Wednesday.
East Side residents upset with Democratic campaign consultant JoAnn Ramon´s perceived lack of care for a cemetery where many relatives and prominent civil rights leaders are buried will have to wait longer to air their grievances in court. Ramon, who owns Southern Memorial (Eastview) Cemetery in the 3500 block of Roland Road, struck a deal Tuesday with the Texas attorney general´s office to allow her 90 days to clean the cemetery before she must reappear in court.
Washington - A self-described conservative Republican who is a manager in the Internal Revenue Service office that targeted tea party groups told investigators that he, not the White House, set the review in motion, the top Democrat on the House watchdog committee said Sunday. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., released a partial transcript of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform interview with the unnamed manager in the IRS' Cincinnati office. In it, the employee said the extra scrutiny for tea party groups' tax exempt status was an effort to be consistent
NEW YORK - Rush Limbaugh’s distributor on Thursday said there is no denying the conservative radio host’s controversial comments about Sandra Fluke hurt advertising last year — but 2013 is apparently a whole different ballgame. This year, Limbaugh is drawing new advertisers and recovering well after the major boycott he faced in response to his broadcasts on Fluke, Premiere Radio senior vice president and director of talk radio sales Dan Metter told the Talkers New York 2013 conference.
The DUI arrest of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg could have far-ranging consequences. The DA´s office is home to the Public Integrity Unit, which has jurisdiction over crimes committed by public officials. Republicans have long hungered to get their mittens on the office, which has a history of prosecuting high-profile Republicans, including Tom DeLay and Kay Bailey Hutchison.
The Democrat who implicated two members of the liberal super PAC Progress Kentucky in the secret taping of a campaign strategy meeting for Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell is changing his story. Jacob Conway, a member of the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee, said Friday he might have talked to only one of the men he accused, according to The Courier-Journal. Conway told the newspaper he is certain he talked with volunteer Curtis Morrison about the recording, but might not have spoken with Executive Director Shawn Reilly, contradicting what he said a day earlier.
Progress Kentucky is a super PAC that is acting more like a rogue operation in its efforts to unseat Kentucky Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell -- sending out racially sensitive tweets and allegedly making a secret recording of the Senate minority leader’s re-election strategy talks. The group has been around only since December, raising about $1,000 and spending $18, compared to the McConnell campaign that has raised $10 million toward 2014 re-election efforts, according to recent Federal Election Commission filings. Kentucky Democrats have over the past week made numerous,
During this year´s Conservative Political Action Conference, the American Conservative Union paraded its star lineup of African Americans who share their political philosophy. They were featured as a “stunning array of speakers from the African American community.” But in reality, they are not known by black America, with the exception of Dr. Benjamin Carson and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The problem that conservatives face when featuring these people is that even though they are black, they are not in tune with African Americans. They do not share the struggles, frustrations and everyday problems of the community they claim to represent.
DENVER—Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper will sign legislation Wednesday that sets limits on ammunition magazines and expands background checks for firearms, marking a Democratic victory in a state where gun ownership is a treasured right and Second Amendment debate has played out in the wake of two mass shootings. The measures proposed are some of the strictest gun laws in the nation,
She admitted voting twice in the presidential election last November, and now, Obama supporter Melowese Richardson has been indicted for allegedly voting at least six times. She also is charged with illegal voting in 2008 and 2011. The 58-year-old veteran Cincinnati poll worker, indicted Monday, faces eight counts of voter fraud. Two others, one of whom is a nun, have been charged separately.
When Democrats in the Texas House met in late January to elect Rep. Yvonne Davis of Dallas as their leader by the slimmest of margins, she promised to listen to their voices and not to unelected outsiders, specifically, Houston Democratic benefactor Steve Mostyn. Almost immediately, the phone of the successful plaintiff´s lawyer lit up with text messages from lawmakers lamenting the remarks of the woman they had just elected as their leader. After all, Mostyn and his wife, Amber, have infused $25 million into Democratic efforts in the past two election cycles. Surely, some respect was owed.
In 2008 and then again in 2012, after retired four-star General Colin Powell endorsed and then voted for Barack Obama, the former Secretary of State´s sanity was already in question. At least now, after having his email account hacked by high-level security-breacher Guccifer, Colin Powell´s besmirching of the Republican Party´s "shift to the right" and "identity crisis" finally makes sense. It seems that for years the mannerly and always professional Colin Powell has been cyber-comporting with a 46-year-old Romanian European Parliament member, Social Democrat, and past spokesperson for Romanian president Ion Iliescu named Corina Cretu
Conservatives have for years attempted to put our finger upon precisely why Barack Obama strikes us as queer in precisely the way he does. There is an alienness about him, which in the fever swamps is expressed in all that ridiculous Kenyan-Muslim hokum, but his citizen-of-the-world shtick is strictly sophomore year — the great globalist does not even speak a foreign language. Obama has been called many things — radical, socialist — labels that may have him dead to rights at the phylum level but not down at his genus or species. His social circle includes
For nearly a year, we have had no answer to why the administration lied about Benghazi — why it told the world, not to mention the parents of our murdered SEALs at the funeral of their sons, that the cause of that fatal conflagration was an anti-Islamic video no one saw, when the various arms of our executive branch (White House, State and intelligence) already knew, or strongly suspected, it was a terror attack orchestrated by al-Qaeda affiliates. You only have to read the now infamous talking points to know that. That this lie was deeply immoral is obvious.
Today, across Africa, Araby and Asia, from Nouakchott to Dhaka, the diplomatic facilities of the United States are closed. There’s a Tsarnaev out there, somewhere – could be the Mahgreb, the Levant, the Horn of Africa, the Indian sub-continent – who knows? So, as Richard Fernandez writes, “Shelter in place, this time globally.” Maybe it will work. Maybe by the end of the day there will be, unlike Benghazi a year on, men in custody. But if not? Daniel Pipes: Don’t know about you, but I find this pre-emptive cringing unworthy of a great country, even humiliating.
He thought he was a woman trapped in a man’s body — but it turns out he’s “just another boring straight guy.” ABC News editor Don Ennis strolled into the newsroom in May wearing a little black dress and an auburn wig and announced he was transgender and splitting from his wife. He wanted to be called Dawn. But now he says he suffered from a two-day bout of amnesia that has made him realize he wants to live his life again as Don. “I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing
The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking
WASHINGTON — Former Massachusetts lawmaker Barney Frank revealed that he doesn’t believe in God. During Friday’s appearance on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Frank, who championed the decriminalization of pot while serving in the House of Representatives, admitted to smoking marijuana and being an atheist. “You were in a fairly safe district. You were not one of those congress people who would have to worry about every little thing,” Maher said to Frank. “You could come on this show and sit next to a pot-smoking atheist and it wouldn’t bother you.”
In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus threatened to pull the group’s partnership with NBC and CNN for 2016 GOP presidential primary debates if the networks moved ahead with plans to air films on Hillary Clinton. “If they have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor,” Preibus said in a statement. In individual letters to CNN President Jeff Zucker and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt,
The Pentagon has placed its elite cadre of special operations teams on full alert to launch preemptive attacks against suspected al Qaeda targets across the globe, according to reports. The American special forces teams have spent the past week waiting for U.S. military and intelligence officials to confirm the whereabouts of the terror cell plotting to attack U.S. diplomatic outposts in the Mideast and North Africa. Unnamed sources told CNN on Monday that the teams were poised to carry out the preemptive strikes, but declined to comment on where the U.S. forces were located or which potential
Oprah Winfrey on Monday said the killings of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing." This transpired during an interview with The Grio that aired on NBC´s Today show. OPRAH WINFREY: It´s so easy during this time: Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin parallel to Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing. But you can, you can get stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we´ve come. Really? Martin and Till are the same thing?
In an exclusive interview for The Grio, NBCUniversal’s African-American news and opinion website, Oprah Winfrey weighed in with her unvarnished thoughts on the killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Winfrey said that, in her mind, Martin’s murder and that of Emmett Till in 1955 – whose killers were also acquitted – were the “same thing.” However, she added that it is important to keep in mind how much race relations in America have progressed over the last half-century. In a clip of the interview which aired on NBC’s Today, Oprah told The Grio’s Chris
