Grief grips neighborhood
San Antonio Express News, by Ana Ley

Original Article

Posted By:john56, 1/26/2013 11:42:02 AM

A day after watching a 6-year-old neighborhood boy fly through the air when he was fatally struck by a teenage driver suspected of being intoxicated, Jane Withers refused to leave the spot where the boy´s mother tried in vain to save him. Overcome by the magnitude of the tragedy that left Brandon Abrams´ family grieving and a 17-year-old jailed on intoxication manslaughter charges, Withers helped set up a makeshift memorial soon after the incident at 6 p.m. Thursday in her Northwest Side neighborhood.

Comments:
Sadly, the dead child was ON THE SIDEWALK waiting for the ice cream truck to arrive. The murderer ... excuse me, the accused murder ... is a 17 year old DRUNK driver (drinking age is 21), without a license, who "lost control" of his truck when he dropped his cell phone. Oh yeah, the immigration folks have placed a hold on the guy, since his "status" as what Dear Leader(US) Obama and his San Antonio stooge, Mayor Castro would call either an "undocumented alien" or a "future Democrat voter" is in question.

While I truly feel sorry whenever something tragic happens to a child ( I´m a grandfather), I sometimes have to wonder if there is a group of entrepenuers that specialize in stuffed animals, candles and flower arrangements to immediately pile on the sidewalks.

The idea of technology was to make life better. It´s gone over the hump by now and every technological innovation will just make life more difficult. But this has not yet been recognized, so we´ll just keep introducing new, clever, glittery gizmos and life will just keep getting more and more meaningless.

I, too, wonder about all the "stuff" piled at these scenes. I do not mean to criticize but I think it is kind of creepy. I think they just don´t know what else to do. I feel the same way when I go to a cemetery and see toys and trinkets piled around a headstone. Condolences to the family. I am very sorry for your loss.

-That stuff has to stop. The cellphone is ridiculous, the drinking,- he said, in reference to the intoxication manslaughter charges. He questioned why a 17-year-old would be -drinking at 5 o´clock in the afternoon.-

It´s what they do. I grew up in SA among mostly Mexican-American kids. They didn´t act like this. It is the illegals who have a disfunctional culture of drunkenness. Until we put an end to the invasion the DUIs, crime and more deaths will escalate.

Failure to enforce existing immigration law costs another innocent U.S. life. I hope there is a God so that this little boy can be in paradise and the drunk Mexican can pay for his crimes in the afterlife, because you know some bleeding heart liberal lawyer will get him off nearly scott free.

Amen #1 and #8. BUT I have an idea. Let´s have that 17 year old PUNK look at pictures of injured and dead (that´s DECEASED if you´re a cop) kids. Also let´s have the PUNK take classes in good driving while sober. Yeah that should solve the problem. Personally I think any punk teenager who drives drunk should be beat to death.

When I was a kid one of my 12 year old cousins was hit by a drunk driver and killed. I don´t recall any candlelit vigils or piling of toys and flowers. The neighbors brought food to his family and showed up at the funeral. They were all very good to my aunt for months afterward. I suppose tossing a stuffed critter into the pile means there has to be no personal contact and you can go about your business.

Months of speculation and weeks of intensifying rumors reached a crescendo Friday, as Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño resigned his post and aborted his decorated four-decade career in Texas law enforcement amid ongoing federal prosecutions of eight lawmen in addition to a former commander and Treviño’s youngest son. The move had been anticipated for weeks, but the fallout from the Hidalgo County’s highest-ranking lawman could still be significant. “The Sheriff’s Office is a very large department with many individuals and assets, hopefully they have the infrastructure in place to keep operations running smoothly

AUSTIN — Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis on Friday released a list of public-sector clients she has represented since 2010, addressing a potential campaign issue in her race for governor. The list provided to the San Antonio Express-News/Houston Chronicle includes the clients she has represented as part of the Newby Davis firm, according to her campaign. It doesn´t include all the public-sector clients represented by the two-person firm she has with Brian Newby, Republican Gov. Rick Perry´s former chief of staff. The list only includes the clients she handles, not those Newby handles, according to her campaign.

The Bexar County Elections Department, responding to a complaint of voter intimidation at Collins Garden Library, said the two election workers serving as greeters were told to stop asking voters to declare their party affiliation in front of other voters.

A federal judge has sentenced ex-Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos to 13 years in federal prison. Villalobos choked on sobs as he stood before the court asking for leniency before U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen. The former district attorney refused to address the charges because he stated he will seek an appeal. But Villalobos said a prison sentence would deeply hurt his family. The former district attorney said his wife has already filing for divorce and that his 12-year-old daughter is an honor student and plays the piano but is battling depression.

Clinton made the confession at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting in New Orleans. “The last time I actually drove a car myself was 1996,” the 66-year-old Clinton told the audience. “And I remember it very well, and so does the Secret Service, which is why I haven’t driven since then.”

Kathryn Riffenburg decided on a closed casket for her baby´s funeral. She didn´t want her family to see what whooping cough, her son´s first illness, had done to 9-week-old Brady Alcaide. The nearly forgotten disease, which has in recent years afflicted thousands of Americans, left Brady´s tiny body swollen and unrecognizable. So his mother dressed him in a white baptismal suit and hat and tucked him into a tiny white casket. Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican.
