Former CIA intelligence officer John Kiriakou has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for leaking the name of a covert officer´s name to a reporter. The 48-year-old Arlington man pleaded guilty in October to violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, which no one had been convicted under in 27 years. He was sentenced Friday in federal court in Alexandria. Kiriakou has admitted to leaking the name of a covert officer and to telling reporters that another agent was involved in an operation to capture al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah, according to prosecutors. Outing a covert operative should be punished severely under any administration. These people go to enormous lengths to keep what they do a secret and they make substantial sacrifices personally to do so. I was in a band in the DC area with a good guy who was the drummer. He would occasionaly need to go out of town for work and would be gone for a few weeks. If you asked hiim what he did he would reply he worked for the government in electronics. One day he disappeared along with his familiy never to be heard from again. I also had a friend who was a pastor. One of his flock who had been very involved in the church and with whom he had become good friendscame to him one day and said he was not supposed to tell him anything but he wanted the pastor to know he and his family would just disappear and he would not hear from them again because it was time for him to assume his new identiy and assignment working for the firm.

Actually, he´s a lib. But what he did was so egregious that they had to try him. (He said we were torturing left and right.) All the left wing sites are atwitter about the "whistleblower" and "dissenter" being sentenced.

**SPOILER ALERT** Most of the suspense and therefore enjoyment of Liam Neeson´s new action thriller "Non Stop" comes from trying to figure out who the villain is and why this person is doing what he or she is doing. If you read the rest of this article, it will spoil the entire movie for you. Period. You have been warned. There is no question that "Non-Stop" is a well-made, involving, not-terribly-dumb action-thriller that delivers plenty of suspense and endears Liam Neeson further into the heart of those of us who love well-made, involving, not-terribly-dumb action-thrillers. A new and comprehensive comparison of health insurance options offered by Obamacare versus private websites finds that President Obama´s program offers less choice and higher prices than promised by the White House and leading Democrats. Adding to the list of broken health care promises, the study from the National Center for Public Policy Research found that there were more and cheaper options available on websites outside the health insurance exchange in 2013 than on healthcare.gov and state Obamacare exchanges. The report, "Obamacare Exchanges: Less Choice, Higher Prices,” looked at options available for a 27-year-old single person and a 57-year-old couple in metropolitan

U.S. Supreme Court declines

The Supreme Court has declined to hear a case about a German home-schooling family who is seeking asylum status in the United States. The court rejected the case Monday without comment. Devout Christians Uwe and Hannelore Romeike have been seeking asylum because German law does not permit home-schooling and requires children to attend state-approved schools. The Romeikes and their six children moved to Tennessee in 2008 to avoid hefty fines and possible jail time. The family initially was granted asylum by a U.S. immigration judge. That judgment was overturned by an immigration panel, which said the family was not persecuted and was not eligible

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), in a new interview with Time magazine, says that President Obama made a good impression on GOP senators when he sat down to dinner with them last year. Part of the reason? "Because he was smarter than the rest of us." Here´s McCain´s full quote, from Time: "I thought when he had a couple of dinners with Republican senators, we really had a good environment there. Because he is a very very articulate and attractive guy in a setting with eight or nine senators and him. Because he was smarter than the rest of us. ... But I

Obama opened his remarks at the Democratic National Committee´s winter meeting by joking that he´s using an executive order to force someone else to pick up a happy hour tab: "Well, it´s Friday. It´s after 5:00. So this is now officially happy hour with the Democratic Party. (Applause.) I can do that. It is an executive action. I have the authority. (Laughter.) Henry is picking up the tab. The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday set new limits on the amount of sulfur permitted in gasoline, capping a lobbying battle that pitted the oil and refining industries against automakers and public health groups. The EPA´s "Tier 3" gasoline rule ratchets down sulfur content to 10 parts per million from 30. The agency said it would bring $13 in health benefits for every dollar spent to comply with the standard, amounting to between $6.7 billion and $19 billion in annual health benefits by 2030. Those health benefits include reducing respiratory — such as asthma — and heart ailments linked to soot,

As John noted below, President Obama spent an hour and a half on the telephone with Vladimir Putin discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What was the conversation like? We can probably get a good sense of it by considering the account of President Bush’s conversations with Putin set forth by Peter Baker in his excellent book about the Bush presidency, Days of Fire. It’s well known that Bush and Putin got on well at first. But when the relationship soured, Bush became exasperated by his talks with the Russian bully. Putin seemed to delight in debating Bush. FOR FIVE YEARS, President Obama has led a foreign policy based more on how he thinks the world should operate than on reality. It was a world in which “the tide of war is receding” and the United States could, without much risk, radically reduce the size of its armed forces. Other leaders, in this vision, would behave rationally and in the interest of their people and the world. Invasions, brute force, great-power games and shifting alliances — these were things of the past. Secretary of State John F. Kerry displayed this mindset on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday when he

The protesters were mostly college students who participated in a peaceful march that began at Georgetown University and ended outside the White House. They chanted "climate justice now" and carried signs with slogans such as "don´t tarnish the earth" in an effort to persuade President Barack Obama to reject the pipeline. They say it will worsen global warming. Protesters were passionate but quite orderly. Police were waiting for them with buses and vans to speed the process.

President Obama´s proclaimed strategy to "bypass Congress" — most conspicuously his broad rewriting of the Affordable Care Act — has given unusual prominence to a fairly arcane legal doctrine: standing. Standing is what is preventing a potential blizzard of litigation against the president´s unilateral decrees, and ironically, it´s a doctrine liberal jurists have long decried. To challenge the government in federal court, it isn´t enough to simply believe that the government´s conduct is illegal or even unconstitutional. Federal courts can hear only specific disputes about the law as applied to particular people. To be heard in court, a person must have
