Tina Turner becoming Swiss citizen;
hometown mayor ´surprised´

What Gerard Depardieu is to France, Tina Turner may be to the United States. The Nutbush, Tenn. native is giving up her US passport, in favor of a Swiss one. "I´m very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here. ... I cannot imagine a better place to live," Turner told the German newspaper Blick. Turner has lived in the Zurich suburb of Kuesnacht since the mid-1990s. The local Zuerichsee-Zeitung newspaper said on its website the local council announced its decision to grant the 73-year-old Turner citizenship in an official notice published in Friday's edition.The decision still requires formal approval from state and federal authorities.Turner's rep told Zuerichsee-Zeitung the singer wanted to "clarify her situation."

Comments:
Looks like a lot of rich people are moving their money overseas. Noticed tons of Americans (White and Black) during a recent trip to Dubai. Dubai has zero income taxes. If you give up your US Citizenship, you pretty much keep everything you make. The salaries in Dubai are apparently a lot higher than in the US for the same job because they are trying to attract Americans to move there.

Not surprising. Tina has been living in Switzerland since 1995 and speaks German. For non-citizens, the Swiss income tax maxes out at $50K, which is likely less than she would pay in the USA. Not sure what taxes she´ll pay as a citizen. Maybe Zurich Mike knows.

Switzerland is a far, far more free nation than the U.S. is today. New Zealand is a good candidate for prospective expats, too.

Don´t get me wrong - I´m an American and I plan to stay here and die here. But I can understand how leaving can make a lot of sense for some people.

Let´s talk about the mom who regrets her children. Last week, the Daily Mail published a first-person story by Isabella Dutton, a 57 year old mother of two who declared her children to be "the biggest regret of her life." Since the Daily Mail is possibly the internet´s leading purveyor of "human interest in hating other humans" stories, it goes without saying that the article incited (and was intended to incite) a monstrous tsunami of scorn.

MUMBAI — India hanged a man on Saturday who had been convicted of involvement in the 2001 attack on Parliament that killed nine people. The hanging of Afzal Guru, a 43-year-old militant with the group Jaish-e-Mohammad, came more than a decade after the Dec. 13, 2001, suicide attack on India’s Parliament in which five gunmen opened fire, killing nine people, including security officials and a journalist. The execution drew protests from human rights groups concerned about the growing use of capital punishment in such cases.

In an interview with ABC News, the nation's top elected Republican seemed to indicate that Congress wouldn't engage in the type of repeated repeal votes the way it had in the past two years. Boehner's office provided a transcript of the exchange: Sawyer: A couple of other questions about the agenda now. You have said next year that you would repeal the healthcare vote.

After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”
