Chase Power, the parent company behind the $3 billion Las Brisas coal power plant in Corpus Christi, Texas, announced yesterday that it was cancelling the project. “Chase Power … has opted to suspend efforts to further permit the facility and is seeking alternative investors as part of a plan of dissolution for the parent company,” Chase CEO Dave Freysinger told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Its time for Governor Perry to assert states rights and come to the defense of this project. He should tell them to go forward and let the EPA come after him and the entire state of Texas. Let´s get a fight going. If our politicians bend over and take it, we´re all biff´d.

Coal powered plants should shut ´em down for a week. Shut the power off. O-F-F off. Get the people´s attention, this is what is coming folks, and the means to turn the lights back ON is going to cost EVERYone a whole bunch more. It doesn´t have to, but that´s the way your new president wants it. Here´s a little taste early.

The State of Texas is actually very active in challenging EPA overreach, particularly greenhouse gas nonsense. However, just as a point of information, the new abundance of natural gas at much cheaper prices is also affecting the economics of coal fired power plants.

#12 is correct, both that TX is fighting the EPA quite successfully and that the price of natural gas has made coke from petroleum less attractive for power generation in a highly populated area. The coke will still be produced by the refineries and can be exported through the port. Someone else will build a super efficient direct fired gas turbine co-generation facility and use the steam to run a chemical plant. Particulates and NOx will be greatly reduced using natural gas. The tragedy is that a reasonable business plan was destroyed by a sequence of rule changes by the EPA.

A widely-held notion on the left holds that Republicans and conservatives just “love” Russian President Vladimir Putin.
