Ok, I hate to suggest this, but let´s take this to the logical extreme. Let´s revise the UCMJ and eliminate those silly old ideas concerning sodomy and adultery. Revise the Selective Service Registration to require the registry of all. Oh phooey, lets just institute a mandatory four years military service for everyone. Then maybe some of the Lofo,s will wake up and realize that this stuff has consequences.

What´s the weight of their field packs? 110 pounds? What are the requirements for physical preparation for front-line warriors?
How much will our forces be degraded (i.e., someone else will either have to carry more in their field packs, a man, or carry the "woman soldier´s" pack, and the physical preparation will be minor compared to what the men have to go through and the result will be crippling to our military´s ability to fight wars)? This country has truly gone insane. But as hillary clinton screams when our people are slaughtered...who cares, what does it matter?

Having been in combat all I will say is as long as they don´t lower the standards for PT, etc and the requirements for the elite forces OK. That being said when the first woman is KIA from this the press will have a field day. That is a slap in the face to all the men who have died for their country.

The Hill´s article on this topic mentions that this could have "outside implications" on issues such as the current law requiring adult males to register for Selective Service. What they don´t say, and maybe Panetta hasn´t addressed it, is whether or not women will be required to register too.

The only mitigant I can see has to do with the current nature of warfare. The distance between the front and the rear areas is now so compressed that everybody in the theater of operation is effectively in a combat zone. To that end it is appropriate to recognize that all are at risk.

But I still see bad karma coming down over this decision.

I understand that it does not include infantry, but there are plenty of other positions that are in harms way. 139 women have died in the two wars. This does open up more opportunities for women and it is on a volunteer basis.

P.S. A pack does not weigh 110 pounds. (Don´t volunteer to carry the motor plate!)

The vast majority of the women who think that women serving in ground combat units is cool are not about to join the military in any capacity, not alone become an infantry person and subject themselves to the extreme hardships that have always been associated with sustained ground combat.

Men in combat become very base creatures. They swear, fight and kill. Today, women in the front lines are ALWAYS escorted to protect them from the men on their own side.

Another female Navy vet here: most women in the services don´t want to be in combat (except perhaps those in the Marines), just a few of more crazy ones. It´s always the loud minority who get heard. Another example would be putting women on subs: most of us think it´s a bad idea, but there are those few. And for those who say it could be an all-female command, are you kidding me?! There are many roles in the military suitable for women, even if not at the tip of the spear. Unfortunately for women, unless a commander has experience at the tip of the spear, those who are presently there may not have confidence in him/her. That won’t change, and it limits women’s ability to be promoted to the highest levels of leadership.

And when do women start registering for the draft? Unbelievable that so many women will be sacrificed in combat just to satisfy the ambitions of a comparatively small number of women in the officer corps who hanker to be
"real" generals. When does the Betty Friedan Brigade get suited up and ready to march to the front lines?

This is not some affirmative action/equal rights policy. Unless you´ve been on the front lines facing death every day, you can´t make the smart decision on this issue. Panetta made the politically correct decision (as the obama regime defines it) but not the right one.

For tens of thousands of years of history, the men fought wars while women took care of home. Only in dire circumstances, when the army was destroyed and enemy was invading the home did women fight, therefore they should be trained to fight but not on the offensive.

And when the soldiers are captured and the females are tortured or raped, what are the men going to do? Won´t they give up more quickly? Doesn´t this just make the man´s natural role as the warrior so much harder??? What are they trying to do to our civilizatoin.

I seriously doubt any women will want to go unless she has a serious case of "penis envy".

FACT: Physical standards will have to be lowered. FACT: Women need to squat to pee. How will they manage that when in a hole with men? In a fantasy world they will just take a leak whenever and whereever they need with no fear for their safety since all their fellow soldiers will "respect" their need for privacy - in a pigs eye.
FACT: Women will be a detriment when heavy lifting is required.
FACT: Women get pregnant and will be removed from the unit leaving a hole. FACT: Women who want out of combat will get pregnant. FACT: Can a woman carrying a rifle and backpack drag a 200 pound soldier across an open space or through rocks? Of course not, so accomodations will be required to have a woman in a small unit in close combat.
FACT: Bayonets are not a thing of the past.
Finally, the generals will tell the colonels to make it work. The colonels will order the majors and captains to make it work. The majors and captains will tell the Lts and NCOs do whatever it takes to make it look like it´s working and all the reports up the chain will be fudged (lied)to make it appear everything is a success. the politicians will say - see, we knew it would work, knowing they were being lied to by the generals who were lied to by the colonels who were lied to by the majors and captains who were lied to by the Lts and NCOs and they will lie up the chain because they would rather fail at some future date whan fired for not making it work.

There is no money to implement this. I think the ranks at the front will look like my independent grocery market that runs on alternative life styles, Well it used to anyway. Now it is empty at dinner time because the Moms won;t expose their kids to the "alternative life-style" staff.
