New York City Employers Can No

New York Observer, by Jane Gayduk

Today, the New York City Council was the first in the nation to pass a law that prohibits employers from considering an applicant’s current employment status while making their hiring decisions. Job advertisers have long filtered applicants according to their present employment status, selecting only those persons who are currently employed. Now, New York will be the first city in the country providing people with the opportunity to file a lawsuit based on unemployment discrimination such as this. “Imagine spending every day and night for months upon months upon months

Makes no sense, When filling out the application a person is asked for the current employer and the prospective employer will check and confirm employment. If someone doesn´t want to provide that info they don´t get the job.The NYC council comes up with the dumbest ideas.Very poor leadership

I taught graduate courses in Human Resource Management for a quarter of a century, and would note that federal employment laws are suffocating to the employer. And if you add in state and local employment laws, especially from the far left states, you can get a sense about the likelihood of a company expanding in one of those states.

This latest one is a pip.

Reply 10 - Posted by: KTWO, 1/23/2013 9:41:15 PM     (No. 9135401)

So can the applicant volunteer the information? If not, is it a restraint of free speech?

Can they confirm anything with your last employer?

This reminds me of proposals intended to help ex-convicts find jobs by shielding various information. I don´t know how many of those well-intended laws are on the books in various places.

Reply 11 - Posted by: skedaddle, 1/23/2013 10:01:40 PM     (No. 9135439)

Useless law since your employment status is very apparent by the employment dates you list on your application. On the other hand, what in heck is wrong with employers in this economy who´ve decided to not even look at unemployed people. You are too stupid to run a business if you use employment status as your first criteria in these times and I hope anyone who does this finds themselves unemployed so they´ll know what an evil fool they´ve been.

Reply 12 - Posted by: MickTurn, 1/24/2013 10:43:19 AM     (No. 9136316)

Fill out the employment form...list all past jobs including current.

Thanks, I fixed the idiocy!

Has anyone ever seen a job interview form without past jobs?

With countries bracing for North Korea to conduct a missile test, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday that the isolated nation was "skating very close to a dangerous line." During an afternoon news conference at the Pentagon, Hagel also told reporters that the United States had "every capacity" to "deal with" any action taken by the North against the U.S. and its interests and allies. Within the next few decades, carbon emissions could cause global temperatures to rise between 4 and 11 degrees Fahrenheit, melting ice caps and causing sea levels to rise. And yet, a lot of people find it hard to really care about climate change. But don´t be fooled: Climate change will affect you. Here´s a brief sampling of ways that warmer temperatures will suck the fun out of your life: 1. Your flights will be more turbulent

In Silicon Valley, the employee perks are the stuff of legend. Parents-to-be at Facebook are given a bonus to help with expenses and extensive maternity and paternity leave. Software company Evernote will pay to have their employees apartments cleaned twice every month. And Google — perhaps the most generous when it comes to fringe benefits — lavishes its employees with free concierge service and a cafeteria chock full of gourmet food. While these benefits are partially a product of the intense competition for qualified tech workers, they may also be a way for companies to simply increase compensation

The state health exchanges that are central to the U.S. Affordable Care Act are costing the federal government more than twice its initial budget to complete. The Obama administration expects to have spent $4.4 billion in fiscal 2012 and 2013 on grants to states that are building new marketplaces to sell subsidized health insurance, according to budget proposals released today for 2014. A year ago, the administration had anticipated spending about $2 billion. Including grants the administration expects to make in 2014, costs for the state-run exchanges will reach about $5.7 billion. SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

The state of California is reportedly considering legislation that would force group insurance policies to provide infertility treatment for gay and lesbian couples. Two men who have sex with each other for a year and do not produce a baby would be considered “infertile” under the proposed legislation. So would two women having sex. Since biology does not allow those without a uterus to conceive or those without a penis to impregnate, every year-long gay couple in California would potentially be covered by this new provision of California law.
