Good Sense and Gun Control
Tribune Media Services, by Jonah Goldberg

In the early 1980s, transit officials in Washington couldn’t figure out why traffic on the Beltway would grind to a near halt every day around the exact same time. The usual explanations didn’t fit. Then it was discovered that a single driver was to blame. Every day on his drive to work, this commuter would plant himself in the left lane and set his cruise control to 55 mph, the posted speed limit, forcing those behind him to merge right, and you can imagine the effects. (Snip) The man’s name was John O. Nestor. He explained that the left lane was great: less traffic, less merging — why not ride it into

This type of thought is wasted on the left.

They do not have a thought gene. Only an emotion gene. The common sense gene was never part of their makeup.

Unfortunately, there are millions, regardless of political views, who emulate John Nestor on the highways. They may question taxes, zoning, and other government decisions but remain convinced that speed limits come directly from the Hand of God instead of a government less interested in safety than in ticket revenue.

Obama has perfected his skill at manipulating liberals and morons with feel good phrases that mask his own egotistical lust for power. It doesn´t work so well on the rest of us so we get belittled, mocked and insulted. What a guy.

It still bears repeating. Gun control is not about public safety, its about political safety. The dimocrats´ solutions to the Newtown incident have been on the shelves awaiting an opportunity for years and years. Nothing they are doing today is driven by Newtown, except the exploitation of the freshly dead.

I despise the "if it saves one life" rationale since it´s only ever selectively applied to someone´s favorite cause. If we used this excuse across the board, we´d have to start with cars then what: stairs, bathrooms, swimming pools (or any swimming venue; the ocean?) virtually all chemicals, the list goes on and on. It is ridiculous and lame and needs to be called out every time it´s used.

Reply 7 - Posted by: M2, 1/23/2013 8:03:36 AM     (No. 9133693)

...a Nestorite standard would not only do terrible violence to the First, Second, and Fifth Amendments, it would indisputably hold the freedom, health, and happiness of the many hostage to the potentially bad actions of the few.

...which is exactly the goal if you are Obama. Restricting individual liberty and freedom in order to allow the State to control the whole enchilada is exactly what this Administration and the American Left is all about.

I had lunch with a very nice liberal lady yesterday. She couldn´t answer a single question I asked her about why taxing the rich is a good idea, why she "hates the rich" even though she is rich herself, how she justifies not paying any taxes while she figures out ways to tax "the rich" at exhorbitant levels, how you create jobs by punishing job-creators through higher taxes and regulations, and finally how come gun violence is DOWN in places with the strongest gun control laws. She even said, I swear, "People don´t need more than a million or two dollars." She was silent when I asked her why she is making moral judgments about how much money anyone needs.

It was like talking to empty space. She is a successful movie producer, author, editor, philanthropist and at one point worked for George Soros. Yet she couldn´t answer a single question I asked. Finally I asked her why she holds her punish-the-rich views. Her answer, "It´s a matter of fairness."

Reason and logic play no part in the liberal worldview. They are true postmodernists -- vacant, angry and wanting to deconstruct all that made America prosperous, as they operate purely on emotion, not reason.

It´s truly maddening.

All well and good if "safety" was the issue. It isn´t, and it´s ridiculous to think otherwise. Incremental steps along the "gun control" spectrum are intended to lead to confiscation, power and control. The Founding Fathers knew it, we know it and they (excluding certain brain-dead useful idiot liberals) know it.

Bottom line: Honest debate and compromise on this issue are impossible.

Exactly right #8.

Why don´t we hear that argument from our representatives on the right?

You know the same week of Newtown shooting Planned Parenthood (also, why do they call themselves that? Shouldn´t they be called Unplanned Parenthood or Planned Deathhood?) released a statement claiming that they performed almost 400,000 abortions last year alone.

Why do we not hear elected Republicans shouting from the rooftops that Obama wants to save every child from a rare, random act of lunatic shooting yet is perfectly fine with 400,000 kids being killed by choice. In fact, he´s funneling our money to help increase the number of baby killings.

Why did we not stage a press conference with scores of kids who survived attempted abortions? Or scores of kids who "wrote letters to Congress"?

Republicans are not taking the fight to Obama on anything! This is why I fear the outcome of the gun debate...sadly.

On "if it saves even one life it is worth it" - how about the cafe standards. The cars are much lighter to get good mileage and give less protection in a crash so the casualties on the highway are way up. Why not let everyone drive an Abrams tank? What would the mileage be then? Is it worth it? That would save a lot of lives yet Obama just raised the Cafe standards. How do we put a price on a human life? Let´s ask the death panels and big sis. They have set a price on life vs the cost of treatment. The only possible source of savings in Obamacare is to cut off the old and sick when they begin to cost the system real money. When are our investigative reporters going to ask Obama what a human life is worth in that case. This number will shift just as the income to qualify as "rich" does and you will not get a number from Obama!

#1 and #7 are why I am so depressed. What can be done when there is no chance of reasoning? Obama presented no ideas in this last election, because he knows that a majority of people who vote are not interested in ideas.

People now vote democrat because they are told and they tell themselves that it makes them ´good´ people. It absolves them of all personal responsibility and any caring for others, which is why they give so little to charity.

How can anyone possibly fight that? There is now a majority of voters who will push the D button so they can feel good about themselves. Meanwhile, those on the other side won´t vote for their guy because he isn´t perfect. Someone, please, try and convince me that there is any chance we will not become a socialist welfare state.

The police should ticket more people for "impeding the flow of traffic". I think they are actually responsible for accidents and even traffic fatalities. Of course they´ll just keep motoring on, totally oblivious of the carnage that they´ve left behind them in their rear view mirrors.

It´s one simple question: which do you prefer? Living in a Bloomberg kind of neighborhood where no guns are allowed, or living in a Texas style neighborhood where normal legitimate gun ownership is the prevailing custom? Good custons deriving from gun ownership, the culture of gun ownership, is never discussed aggressively.
Such responsibility is amazingly American.

California established a so-called "safe storage" requiring that firearms me made inaccessible to minors you know, "if it saves one life". Some time later a pitch fork armed crazed killer broke in to a home where a 14 year old was watching her 4 younger siblings while their parents were out. Although the 14 year old was trained in the use of firearms, her law-abiding parents had locked them up. Though injured, she was able to make it to a neighbor´s home to call for help. Her youngest sister and brother weren´t so lucky and were pitch forked to death.

We need to stop calling Obama´s fantasy Gun Control and refer to it by it´s real name, People Control. Right now, the only way he can control American citizens is through the use of guns. The fact that the citizens are better armed and better in tune with the Constitution than his various goon squads is a real bump in his road. We need to keep it that way if we are to beat this madman. Do not make the same mistake the Germans and the Russians did and give them up willingly.

You know, I´m fed up with the safety issue regarding guns. It is a smoke screen for the fact that if I have a gun, a tyrant cannot make me do something. That is why the founding fathers gave us the 2nd amendment. It was not for personal safety, it was to keep the government from doing exactly what 0 is doing!!!! And he knows that. So do Reid and Pelosi. Which is why they are trying so hard to get our guns, and which is why Charlton Heston´s words ring true for me; "From my cold, dead hands". Patrick Henry was right; "Give me liberty, or give me death". I believe we soon will have to choose.

I am always amazed — amazed — when anyone has the gall to dismiss, even laugh off, the suggestion that the right to keep and bear arms is a smart and necessary provision for a free society. Human history (not to mention current events!) is too chock-full of examples of nefarious regimes violently abusing and controlling their people, and the freedoms enjoyed by American citizens are the exception, not the rule. Frustration is taking its toll in the liberals’ war against guns. President Obama, pushing his broad gun control agenda, said we should be ashamed if we’ve forgotten the Newtown shooting so soon. The New York Times opined that Obama is being shouted down by the “gun lobby,” even though he and Biden had been crisscrossing the country “…making a forceful case for a package of laws that would reduce gun violence.” That, of course, is the media narrative on gun control. Is it time to give up the fight against Obamacare? That’s a question some conservative health-care experts, pundits, and — more quietly — politicians are asking. In the first years after its passage, opponents had hoped that the Supreme Court would strike down the law or that a new president would sign its repeal before most of it took effect. But the Supreme Court decided to modify a few of its provisions instead of striking it down, and President Obama was reelected. Repeal is almost certainly off the table for four years. Obamacare will continue to be implemented.
